Roads are treacherous right now. Some drivers losing control of their cars while going just 15 to 20 miles per hour. The d. O. T. Here at Catawba County is putting sand and salt down along with some brine on some of the over passes and some of the problem areas where theyve had accidents. We talked with one driver who wrecked this morning about these conditions. This guy we saw a bunch of guys fish tailing. Its ridiculous. People need to slow down. Take it slow. If you dont have to go out today, dont go out. Its not worth it. Reporter i think the hardest thing is for folks, when they step outside, they look and they see grass, they see wet roads, the roads have a lot of black ice. The key into the afternoon is the temperature. Right now were holding in the mid 20s. Hopefully itll rise later this evening and get above the freezing mark. Meteorologist Christine Rapp is crash blocking i77 just reporter yeah, we actually just passed that crash there, stephanie. And these conditions up here, weve been driving through areas of mecklenburg and iredell counties. Really bad when you head up north. Lets look at what they look like up here. Roads are very slick. Theyre wet in some areas. Especially up here near mooresville. We had a chance to check up on a couple accidents. Including this one. This is up near the troutman area. A single vehicle was actually on its side, lost control trying to turn, and actually struck a power pole. We talked to the state trooper who was on the scene who said theyre so swamped with accidents in this area, theyre about two hours behind on checking in on some of those reports. If you live in areas of Iredell County to the north, if you can stay indoors, thats probably your best option today. This is what it looks like northbound on 77 near mooresville. Again, this ice is accumulating very quickly on some of these roads. Really just in a matter of minutes. Monitor the conditions out here and give you a live look at what its looking like on the roadways throughout the show. Christine rapp, channel 9 Eyewitness News. Traffic team 9s mark taylor has been monitoring roads for us. Where else are you seeing issues . It seems to be north of the charlotte area. Weve been talking about Catawba County, lincoln county, and iredell counties seem to be hardest hit. These accidents weve been monitoring have been fairly minor. Not causing huge delays. Its the slick conditions. One of those was 77 northbound south of Raleigh School road. Which cleared in the last half no delay. Good news there. Statesville. Youre seeing slick conditions. Nothing for the interstates. Several issues on 321. But it sounds like theyre heeding the warning when i spoke to Police Minutes ago. No big issues other than a small slow down on 321. And i40. Slick conditions here. Green conditions. No big slow downs. Good news theyre offering the advice to stay home if you can. This Winter Weather is also creating problems in greensboro. You can see the snowy roads there late last night. Police responded to more than 30 wrecks in the first hour of snow falling. And more than 90 wrecks in a twohour span. Breaking news in hickory now, police are on the scene of a shooting where a woman was shot in the stomach. It happened just in the past hour on 11th street northwest. Police say a man shot a woman behind a home. Right now they are questioning a possible suspect in the case in hopes of learning a motive. The woman is expected to recover. This midday, flags are at half staff in the nations capitol to mourn the longest justice skalia died this weekend and his body was brought back to washington over all ready theres a battle in replace him. Eyewitness News Reporter jacqueline fell explains the ready brewing. Two North Carolina cases could make it to the Supreme Court. One deals with prayer and county commission meetings. The other is about redrawing Congressional District lines. Lawmakers are Holding Public hearings now. Including one in charlotte on the issue. Last week a federal panel said district 12 is unconstitutional. It also said the march 15th primaries shouldnt go forward until the case could be appealed. Reporter more than 100 flights in and out of charlotte are canceled due to a northeast winter storm. Im live at the airport with what airlines are doing to try to get passengers back in the sky. President ial candidates are in South Carolina today ahead of this weeks primary. State is not a mustwin. While temperatures are below freezing for just about everybody, im looking over data to see when we could thaw the stock market is closed today for president s day holiday. Today nearly all republican president ial candidates are in South Carolina drumming up support ahead of this weekends primary. Marco rubio was in rock hill this morning. Hundreds of people braved freezing temperatures to hear him speak at york tech. He talked about keeping the nation safe and increasing opportunities for americans. In a one on one interview, he told channel 9 South Carolina is critical but wont make or break his campaign. Were not at that stage in the campaign yet where any state is a mustwin. I think we have to do well here. Were going to do well here. Were going to leave here with delegates. And thats important. Rubio says hes the best to reach out to minorities. George w. Bush will campaign for his brother for the first time. Theyll host a joint rally tonight. President bush has become more popular since he left office in 2009. And jeb hopes that can boost his campaign. Donald trump was building a reality tv show, my brother was building a Security Apparatus to keep us safe. And im proud of what he did. And the other state thats our storm cam right now is on i77 southbound right near lake norman. Lots of reports this afternoon of wrecks because of black ice. It looks shiny on the roads. They just look wet. But its black ice. Especially in our northern counties. Well have more on the areas having issues right now from meteorologist keith monday in minutes. Now this same storm system is causing serious crashes along the east coast with record breaking cold and windchills as intense as 36. And its also causing big problems at charlotte douglas. We learned on daybreak, airlines canceled more than 100 departures this morning. Eyewitness News Reporter angela hong is live at the airport and right now charlotte is third in the nation for total cancellations, angela. Reporter were Holding Steady at 57 flights that have been canceled. They were set to go out of you can see the departures board and the arrivals board. Its a sea of red. We spoke to passengers who have been stranded at the airport since last night. American Airlines Says about 20 airports are effected by this winter storm. Including charlotte douglas. According to flight aware, a flight tracking service, more than about 700 flights in the u. S. Have been canceled. It looks like we lost angela there trying to give us airport. We can tell you also that the storm impacting some other now. On daybreak, we told you about slick conditions in raleigh. Thats forced the d. O. T. To close parts of several major interstates. And you can see why. After all of these crashes this morning from cars sliding off roads and into each other. And some of those cars flipped there. New developments this midday, a south Charlotte Bank is offering a 5,000dollar reward to catch the armed man who robbed it. Officers say this man here walked into pnc bank on Arboretum Drive and slipped the teller a note demanding money. Detectives believe the same man robbed this bank on Pineville Matthews road last month. If you know who this is, youre asked to call police. Today the charlotte zoning board will consider two new developments that neighbors worry will increase traffic on an all ready busy road. They want approval to build up place. In less than half a mile away, the zoning board will vote on another 265 apartments. A developer also recently submitted a petition to build 74 town homes at mocking bird and park. Meteorologist keith monday is tracking where there is just enough ice on the roads to cause some major problems for center 9. Weve been mentioning this in hundredth of an inch. In ice, usually 1 4inch or more leads to problems. The salt on the roads is not doing much with the temperatures being so low. The cloud deck is coming down because the atmosphere is moistening up. This. If you look at all the relative humidity numbers around the map here, charlotte is the driest by far. I mean everywhere around us has a lot more moisture coming back in. Of dry air sitting here in town. Thats been precluding a lot of this moisture from coming back in. But it will continue to moisten up as we head through the day today. Were seeing that on live Early Warning doppler 9. The pockets of pink are getting closer into town now. Pockets of light freezing rain. A little sleet coming in. Rolling out of mint hill. Albemarle road at 485. Heading up to the flow store community in cabarrus county. Southward, lake wiley out of tega cay, right around carowinds boulevard and 77 northbound near the steele creek community, 77, 485 toward the out let mall, youll find sleet and freezing rain working in. That batch is moving northeast at 40 miles per hour. Belmont, youll see it in about five minutes. Huntersville at a quarter till 1 00. Theres more activity south. A nice pocket here. Freezing rain, sleet mix. Thats going to head its way toward indian land working and up into the mountains and foothills. Weve seen the steady freezing rain mist all morning long keeping numerous road problems up here to the north. Thats going to be on the future cast through the afternoon. The line of pink from charlotte northbound. But notice south the green is starting to spread in toward the afternoon commute. Eventually things warm up enough. But through 5 00, 6 00, and 7 00, it may still be just at or below freezing like we are now. But this is where weve had the bigger issue up north where its much colder. Thats where weve seen the low to mid 20s holding back on. Surely were going to see the issues remaining up north. In charlotte, were going to ride the line, areas south will warm up quickly into the evening. No issues down south through monroe, lancaster, and charlotte. But that may take well into the evening hours. Thankfully, this isnt adding up to a whole lot. Were only talking about a few hundredths of an inch but thats all its been taking to get the slick travel to show up here to the north. We may see more of this adding up as we wind our way through the afternoon. But then again, tonight, the the warm air gets here. Its all rain over night tonight. And there could be some heavy rain coming through just before the morning drive on tuesday. But that will be all liquid as our numbers do warm as we head through the night. Were back in the upper 30s as a matter of fact. So well get there. But id say through the afternoon, you have to watch for slick pockets out there around charlotte. And more widespread issues up north where its been much colder. Tomorrow were back in the 50s. Close to 60 all the way to the end of the week. And all the way into the weekend. Were in the mid 60s. For the next several hours, icy spots will be out there. By the weekend, well forget we had ice. I know. New details about an accused serial jewelry thief. The training investigators say she got that enabled her to steal 4 million in jewelry. Continuing to give you live pictures this afternoon. This is i77 south in cornelius where were seeing the majority of problems in the northern counties. Were not out of the woods yet. Slick spots in several areas.
