of this the started just before midnight last night and quickly spread. and we spoke with some residents who described waking up to the sounds of sirens and screams. >> my land lady knocked on the door screaming fire, fire. i ran out, no glasses, no asthma medicine, nothing. >> we just got up in time. thank god for. that just got out in time. >> reporter: and from our vantage point, it looks like most of the homes that were burning here last night are completely destroyed. here devastate looking their belongings. there were three minor injury, one civilian and two firefighters. again, dozens of people displaced here in this fire here on valentine avenue overnight. as soon as we get more details, of course, we will bring them to you. for now we are reporting live from the treemont city-wide. and today is a gridlock alert today. another building evacuated days after falling bricks close all 16 tenants at 346 east 63rd street were told by the department of buildings they had to leave over concerns that bricks from a building next door could come crashing through the wood frame building. the department of buildings plans to install protective netting to catch anything that may fall. for now, it's shut down. it's causing traffic and noise in the neighborhood. >> what good do they think they're doing honking that way? >> we're all going to be deaf. >> the department of buildings say it's unclear how long the streets will be closed. they want to be certain the area is safe before it's re- opened. federal investigators are investigating a scaffolding collapse. the workers were replacing a roof when they tumbled 35 feet to the ground. three teenage boys and a 20- year-old are being questioned inside central park. police say a man was punched and had his iphone stolen last night near 37th street. and four suspects ran away. the group is suspected of involvement in two robberies in central park this week. happening today, a bail hearing for former police chief james burke. he has been indicted on federal civil rights charges. he is accused of beating a man who stole sex toys and pornography videos from his suv and then forcing officers to cover up the crime. prosecutors say burke should be denied bail because he is a danger for a community for a long running pattern of behavior. and the mass shooting in san bernardino. this morning divers will continue to search a lake about three miles from the scene. investigators say the husband and wife team responsible for the attack visited the lake the day of the shooting. police believe they may have tossed evidence including a hard drive into the water. ask the first funeral for a victim of the shooting has been held. the 27-year-old was one of 14 people killed. she was due to receive a gold badge officially recognizing her as a health inspector. mayor de blasio is having surgery for a hernia. a spokeswoman says it developed recently. she is expected to have a quick recovery and plans to return to city hall on monday. a man on an anti-muslim tirade faces charges after his incident turns violent. >> reporter: the 26-year-old was charged with a hate crime after this profanity-laced violent outburst in midtown manhattan. it happened tuesday night at the salt and pepper restaurant on west 33rd street. workers say he appeared to be drunk and spew hate-filled words. customers about their religious beliefs and then the turned his aggression towards the worker and hit him in the head. >> what's your religion? you're muslim. >> reporter: he says he tried to stay calm. >> if i do not stop him, he's going to attack me again. >> reporter: in the video, you can see him and another employee force the man out of the store but he comes back inside and picks up three chairs, throwing each one into the food counter, smashing the glass case. a customer called police. >> feel so sad that that night i can't sleep. >> reporter: statistics show hate crimes against muslims are down, 13 this year compared to 23 last year, however those numbers were collected before both the shootings in san bernardino and donald trump's he is charged with hate crimes. reporting in manhattan, cbs 2 [ horns honking ] >> reporter: expect another day of backed up traffic and blocked off street, now four days and counting since bricks fell from the facade of this high-rise at 340 east 64th street. while crews continue to try to city department of buildings ordered tenants to leave in neighboring 346 east 63rd street, worried that more bricks could fall, crashing into their billing. >> i got called by the building department that they're going to evacuate the building over tenants are out. >> reporter: over the last few day, the buildings department says workers put up scaffolding so an inspector could investigate and the closer they have gotten, the more problems they discovered. a spokesperson says the plan now is to put a protective netting to catch anything else that may fall, a temporary fix until the facade wall is rebuilt. for driver, pedestrians and residents in this neighborhood near the busy 59th street bridge, a permanent fix cannot come soon enough. >> traffic is backed up for blocks and blocks and blocks. >> it is what it is, i just wish it would hurry up and be over. live, you can see where those bricks fell off the top of this building. now 1st avenue is still shut down from 60th to the 64th street. traffic has you can imagine at this hour is not too bad but it will pick up as the rush hour goes on. the department of buildings says they are working to to providing support to isis after he tried to travel to syria to join the terror group and prosecutors say before being arrested in jordan, the 20-year-old and his brother planned attacks on both times square and one world trade center. along with technical schools in queens. now he and six others were arrested in august. three of the six have now pleaded guilty. maybe a troubled flight stayed in vegas. jetblue flight to jfk were detained after getting into an inflight fight. that was after a passenger was being too drunk. law enforcement took them off the plane when it landed at jfk along with the liquor they had reportedly brought onboard. the jury begins the second day of deliberations at the trial of former new york state his son acome. he is accused of strong arming companies into giving his son consulting fees and a no-show job. it appears there will not be a quick verdict. yesterday jurors asked to review the testimony of nine witnesses. >> no matter how painful it may seem, it urge everyone to speak up about abuse. don't keep silent and think it will make it better. >> a new jersey man who killed his alleged molester made an emotional apology yesterday. he says he endured years of sexual abuse when he was a child. age of 8 by a former corrections officers and boy scout master dennis pegg. pegg was stabbed to death inside his home. he confessed to the stabbing and said his childhood was stolen by pegg. >> i saw pegg in the company of a young boy months before the attack and iter to something in me. i don't recommend anyone to follow my steps or the path i chose. >> whether it's a lynch mob, an individual, carrying out what they believe to be their form of justice is never good. >> the sentence includes time served in jail. he could be pa roamed late next year. dennis pegg's family says they'll never know the absolute truth. the momentum continues for republican donald trump. the latest poll shows 35% of gop primary voters support trump as the [ horns honking ] >> reporter: expect another day of backed up traffic and blocked off streets. now four days and counting since bricks fell from the facade of this high-rise at 340 east 64th street. while crews continue to try to stabilize the situation, the city department of buildings ordered tenants to leave in neighboring 346 east 63rd street, worried that more bricks could fall, crashing into their building. geno is the super. >> i got called by the building department that they're going to evacuate the building and they needed me over here to make sure all the tenants are out. >> reporter: over the last few day, the building's department says workers put up scaffolding so an inspector could investigate the crumbling facade. and the closer they have gotten, the more problems they discovered. a spokesperson says the plan now is to put up protective netting to catch anything else that may fall. a temporary fix until the for drivers, pedestrians and residentses in this neighborhood near the busy 59th street bridge, a permanent fix cannot come soon enough. >> traffic is backed up for blocks and blocks and blocks. >> you know, it is what it is. i just wish it would thank you. happening today, a bail hearing for former suffolk county police chief james burke. he has been indicted on federal civil rights charges. he is accused of beating a man who stole sex toys and videos from his suv and then forcing officers to cover up the crime. denied bail because he's a danger to the community. five years ago today, the first human remains were found at gilgo beach in suffolk county and now the fbi is joining the investigation. 10 sets to of human remains were found. at least four victims were women in their 20s who were prostitutes. authorities have released very few details in the case. no arrests have been made and police have never identified potential suspects. a verdict will be announced this morning in the trial of a nassau county police officer charged with beating a man during a traffic stop last year. prosecutors say the officer was captured on surveillance video using his fist, knees and a flashlight to hit kyle howell at least 18 times during a traffic stop. police say he initiated the violence by kicking the officers when they allegedly tried to stop him from eating some marijuana. new this morning, police have released video of a suspect in an office burglary in bronx. it happened november 28 just police say the suspect forced open the front door at a series of commercial billings. once inside, he entered a law firm and taking two laptops. diver thes will continue to search a lake about three miles from the scene of the december 2nd massacre. investigators say the husband and wife team responsible for the attack visited the lake the day of the shooting. police believe they may have tossed evidence including a hard drive into the water. they say the search could still take several more days. divers searched a lake in san bernardino as the investigation into last week's mass shooting continues. and the first funeral taking place as well. 14 victims in that shooting. and we will continue to follow all of these as the first funeral is held for one of the 14 people killed in that shooting. and more americans fear terrorists will strike again here in it's. in a new cbs news poll, 44% sayen the attack is likely. since of their homes. certainly a tough night for them here. and you can see that firefighters are still here on the scene and they have been at it for about seven hours here. right now, they are continuing to put water on some of the hot spots that remain. about nine buildings were burning at the height of the fire. they say five of those homes all of this unfolding around 11:30 last night on valentine avenue and east 180th street. the chief says it appears to have started in one home and quickly spread to the nearby buildings. it took about 200 firefighters three hours to get this under control. and i asked the chief what caused the fire to spread so quickly and he says it was the building construction that fed the flames, making it difficult to get a handle. >> one of the problems with a wood frame building is that it's purely combustible. so everything burn, the furniture burn, the structure burn, the roofing burns. >> and now we have to wait and see, you know, i don't have any id on me, i have no money. i have to wait and see what they're going to tell us. >> reporter: again, 90 people displaced so obviously difficult for them as they work to find other places to stay this morning. we can tell you that nine people were injured according to the chief. civilians. the cause still under morning. but they anticipate being here for the remainder of the day as they continue to multi-family home. >> firefighters worked overnight to get the fire under control. good morning. i'm chris wragge. >> and i'm mary calvi. and right to janelle burrell live in the tremont section of bronx. >> reporter: yeah, mary, at the height of the fire, more than half of the block was burning. and you can see firefighters still on the scene here. they have been out here all night. those ladders putting water on the hot spots that remain. nine buildings were burning at one point. five of those buildings were occupied so about 90 people were forced out of their homes overnight here on valentine avenue and east 180th street. and all of this happening just after 11:30 last night. the chief says it appears to have started in one home and then quickly spread to the other buildings. it took about 200 firefighters three hours to get this under control and we spoke with some of the residents who were inside when that fire started who say they woke up to the sound of screaming. >> my land lady knocked on the door screaming fire, fire. i ran out, grabbed my phone, no asthma pump, no glasses. nothing. freezing. >> one of the problems with the wood frame building is that it's purely combustible, it's completely combustible to everything burns. the structure members burn. the roofing burns. >> reporter: now the chief went on to tell us that there were nine injury, all of them minor, six firefighters and three civilians. but again, 90 people were displaced in this massive fire overnight. some were helped by the red cross and others have gone to stay with relatives but obviously a tough time for those people as this fire happened right before the holidays and a lot of them lost everything here overnight. the chief telling us that the cause of the fire still under with more. >> reporter: chris and mary, that's right, another building was evacuated. and 1st avenue near the busy 59th street bridge continue to be shut down for several blocks. all of this after the bricks fell from the building on monday night. the high-rise at 340 east 64th street. while crews continue to try to stabilize the situation, the city department of buildings ordered tenants to leave in neighboring 346 east 63rd street worried that more bricks could fall, crashing into their building. over the last few day, the workers put up scaffolding so an inspector could investigate the facade. a spokesperson says the plan now is to put up protective netting to catch anything else that may fall. a temporary fix until the wall is rebuilt. but people in the neighborhood just hope a
