(suspect neighbor "h"hs a real nice g g. i wouldn't think h h would done that. he was a good guy from what i know." i'm reid binion, reporting >> two people are homeless after a madison, nebraska yesterday. flames were shooting out of the windows when crews arrived on the scene around noon. none of the nearby buildings caught on fire. however, a laundromat next door did receive mino damagege denison, iowa's police chief has admitted that the controversial memes, and images, that sparked a protest last week, were his. but, john emswiler says the images were from his personal work computer and were never meant for public view. he also says the pictures were stolen. former police officer y ohl, and officer bradley wendt, who's on administrative leave from the department, brought the images to the attention of city leaders. emswiler claims most of the photo-shopped pictures were from 2008, or earlier and the memes were from prior to 2010. emswiler claims a majority of the images were shared with the individuals in the pictures, and were intended as "private jokes". he doesn't know when the but he says the images surfaced after ohohwas fired, and wendt was placed on leave. mayor daniel leen investigated the images, and disciplined emswiler, who remains the chief of police. today is the deadline for apple to respond to the department of justice's new court order issued over the phone belonging to one of the san bernardino terrorists. if the order stands up to legal challenges, apple would be forced to create a a w customized i- o-s firmware that would remove the passcode lockout on the seized i- phone. last week, ale reiterated its commitment to privacy and that it has "no connection" to what data may exist on the phone. federal authorities want apple to unlock the phone as part of the investigation. major changes are coming to the 108 parishes in the sioux city catholic diocese. in the end, dozens of parishes will close in an effort to strengthen and sustain its ministry. the diocese faces several challenges. mass attendance has fallen 27-percent since 2008. registered cathoilic households has dropped more than seven- percent. add to that a projection that the diocese will have just 31 full-time priests by 2025, and diocese officials say the t te had come to makee major changes. ktiv's matt breen shows us what these changes mean for the diocese. but, they will be reorganized into four "clusters". each cluster will have a pastor and an associate to celebrate mass at all of the sites." the clusters look like this: sacred heart becomes its own cluster. blessed sacrament and st. michael's will form the holy cross cluster. cathedral of the epiphany, st. boniface, and st. joseph will form the cathedral cluster. and, immaculate conception and nativity will form the mater dei cluster. "the same can't be said for 40 other parishes in the diocese, which will close," said matt breen. here's an example of the reorganizatio n: in this cluster the red dots represent parishes in sanborn, primghar, sutherland and sioux rapids, which would close in favor of parishes in hartley and spencer which will stay o en. closing a parish doesn't mean the church will close. instead, the diocese will move those churches to "oratory" status. mass will no longer be celebrated at those sites, but they can be used for catholic weddings and funerals. "what this does is it let us do the hard work now," said rev. brent lingle, director of pastoral planning. "we're going to know where we're going at least for the next 10 years. rather than, every year, a parish wondering 'i wonder if year. i wonder if we'll have a priest?'" lingle says the proposed plan gives stability to the diocese, and the parishes, for the next ten years. >> now that the draft plan has been ininoduced, each pastor in the 108 existing parishes will foror a leadership team including lay people of parish. they'll get feedback on the plan from parishioners. that feedback will be forwarded to the diocese, which can make adjustments to the plan. the plan goes into effect in july of 2017. some siouxland 8th graders got a lesson in over-engineering thursday. "nat pop sound dominos falling and cheering" the students at mater dei nativity in sioux city built "rube goldberg machins" for their science class. a rube goldberg machine is a contraption that is deliberately over-engineered d perform a a mple task in a complicated way. homemade pulleys and other items to accomplish their goals "they had to use three different simple machines out of the six we learned about and have a minimum of five steps to complete whatever task they went with," said seth sackmann, a sixth grade science teacher at mater dei nativity. "i don't think they should be released. these are very bad people that have done horrible things to american citizens. i reject the president's plan and i don't think it's a good idea to close guantanamo," said iowa senator (r) joni ernst. lawmakers will continue to debate over the closing, while officials nail down possible locations for the transfer of the detainees. depression is more common than you might think.. impacting one-in-four americans at some time in their life. and, a local hospital has a plan to identify the problem as ktiv's tiffany lane explains. suffering from depression. she's done well despite her depression. but, an unexpected event, last year, triggered those feelings again. "i had surgery in june and everything went just kind of sour," said jill van cleave, a patient in unitypoint health- st. luke's behavioral health outpatient program. "so i'm back in partial and it's helping me with my self-esteem and also helping me be around group people better to understand me." van cleave's surgery came after a tear in her intestine and it made her depression and anxiety worse. for treatment, van cleave goes to unitypoint health-st. luke's behavioral health outpatient program three times a week. su "by 2020, depression is expected to be the second leading cause of disability throughout the world. and health officials say a lot of that has to do with the stigma behind the illness." "now that it's being integrated into primaryryare, the screreings, and more people becoming comfortable, because depression is very common," said brad neuendorf, nurse manager for behavioral inpatient services at unitypoint health- st. luke's. and with screenings at st. luke's, their g gl is to tackle mental health issues at the start. "we want to identify them in a primary care outpatient setting prior to them needing to go to the emergency room or showing up in the emergency room with an acute mental health cris," said lynn wold, ceo of unitypoint health-st. luke's. something van cleave and hospital specialists have worked hard to avoid. "there's just a great entrepreneurial spirit here in sioux city," said jim braunschweig. (suspect neighbor "he's a real nice guy. i wouldn't think he would done that. he was a good guy from what i know." i'm reid binion, reporting >> two people are homeless after a fire on main street in madison, nebraska yesterday. flames were shooting out of the windows when crews arrived on the scene around noon. none of the nearby buildings caught on fire. however, a laundromat next door did receive minor damage. denison, iowa's police chief has admitted that the controversial memes, and images, that sparked a protest last week, were his. images were from his personal work computer and were never meant for public view. he also says the pictures were stolen. former police officer ray ohl, and officer bradley wendt, who's on administrative leave from the department, brought the images to the attention of city leaders. emswiler claims most of the photo-shopped pictures were from 2008, or earlier and the memes were from prior to 2010. emswiler claims a majority of the images were shared with the individuals in the pictures, and were intended as "private jokes". he doesn't know when the images were stolen. but he says the images surfaced after ohl was fired, and wendt was placed on leave. mayor daniel leinen investigated the images, and disciplined emswiler, who remains the chief of police. today is the deadline for apple to respond to the department of justice's new court order issued over the phone belonging to one of the san bernardino terrorists. if the order stands up to legal challenges, apple would be forced to create a new customized i- o-s firmware that would remove lockout on the seized i- phone. last week, apple reiterated its commitment to privacy and that it has "no connection" to what data may exist on the phone. federal authorities want apple to unlock the phone as part of the investigation. major changes are coming to the 108 parishes in the sioux city catholic diocese. in the end, dozens of parishes will close in an effort to strengthen and sustain its ministry. the diocese faces several challenges. mass attendance has fallen 27-percent since 2008. and the total number of registered cathoilic households has dropped more than seven- percent. add to that a projection that the diocese will have just 31 full-time priests by 2025, and diocese officials say the time had come to make major changes. ktiv's matt breen shows us what these changes mean for the diocese. pastoral planning. a years-worth of work yielded "ministry 2025", a plan to strengthen and sustain the ministry of the diocese. but, changes will be made. "we understand that the change is going to be difficult," lingle said. 40 of the 108 parishes in july of 2017. sunday masses in too many places that lingle said. eight parishes will be minimal," said matt breen. "they will stay open. but, they will be reorganized into four "clusters". each cluster will have a pastor and an associate to celebrate mass at all of the sites." the clusters look like this: sacred heart becomes its own cluster. blessed sacrament and st. michael's will form the holy cross cluster. cathedral of the epiphany, st. boniface, and st. joseph will form the cathedral cluster. and, immaculate conception and nativity will form the mater dei cluster. "the same can't be said for 40 other parishes in the diocese, which will close," said matt breen. reorganizatio n: in this cluster the red dots represent parishes in sanborn, primghar, sutherland and sioux rapids, which would close in favor of parishes in hartley and spencer which will stay open. closing a parish doesn't mean the church will close. instead, the diocese will move those churches to "oratory" status. mass will no longer be celebrated at those sites, but they can be used for catholic weddings and funerals. "what this does is it let us do the hard work now," said rev. brent lingle, director of pastoral planning. "we're going to know where we're going at least for the next 10 years. rather than, every year, a parish wondering 'i wonder if we're going to be open next year. i wonder if we'll have a priest?'" lingle says the proposed plan gives stability to the diocese, and the parishes, for the next ten years. >> now that the draft plan has been introduced, each pastor in the 108 existing parishes will form a leadership team including lay people of parish. they'll get feedback on the plan from parishioners. to the diocese, which can make adjustments to the plan. the plan goes into effect in july of 2017. some siouxland 8th graders got a lesson in over-engineering thursday. "nat pop sound dominos falling and cheering" the students at mater dei nativity in sioux city built "rube goldberg machins" for their science class. a rube goldberg machine is a contraption that is deliberately over-engineered to perform a simple task in a complicated way. "they had to use three different simple machines out of the six we learned about and have a minimum of five steps to complete whatever task they went with," said seth sackmann, a sixth grade science teacher at mater dei nativity. "my sixth period was mixing baking soda and vinegar." students used toy cars, dominos, homemade pulleys and other items to accomplish their goals "we used two different pulleys," said collin jackson, an eighth-grader at mater dei nativity. "is that his dogs get to be able to find a loving home. and we are gog to be able to help with that," said kelly erie, siouxland humane society assistant shelter manager. currently twelve of the eighteen dogs are at the humane society. most of them are lab-mixes, ranging from 4 to 12 years old. one of the society workers who picked up thth dogs says they came from a goooo home. "he has a nice write up about them. about what they liked, what they didn't like, their names, their age, if they liked their belly rubbed. he asked did you read my list, when we left. and i said yes i read every bit of it. " said heidi kaelke, siouxland humane society supervisor. the society says all the dogs were well taken care of and were up to date on all vaccines and vet check-ups.
