"we have american politicians who aren't honest with the american public about the nature of the threat we confront and tell the truth because we want to be politically correct, we don't want to offend anybody. well we've gotten to the point where we'reemore concerned about offending peole then telling them the truth about a real threat that is now attacking us," said former pennsylvania senator and presidential candidate, rick santorum. santorum will continue his campaign this afternoon in cedar rapids, iowa at 4 p.m. and, former president bill clinton will be in sioux city later this week to support his wife's campaign. the campaign event will take college on friday at noon at the olson student center. doors open at 11:15. for ticket information, check out our website... ktiv.com. iowa lawmakers are hard at work now that the gavel has fallen on the opening day of the 2016 legislative session. there could be a fight over school funding, and that could dictate the budgeting process that has to get done before lawmakers leave des moines, in april. this year lawwkers are vowing to tackle the budget sosoer, and make a key component-- education-- one of the first things they tackle. ktiv's matt lawmakers, like sioux city's ron jorgensen, who chairs the house education committee, want to settle on school funding in the first 30 days of the session. "we need to get the numbers to the schools districts in time so they can plan and certify their budgets in the middle of april," said rep. ron jorgensen, (r) sioux city. "so, i know its a priority of minn to get that done as soon as we possibly can." "lawmakers will also contend with governor terrr branstad's plan to extend the state's penny sales tax to generate billions of dollars for education and water quality," said matt breen. "but, some members of the governor's own party don't support the plan." like senator david johnson, of ocheyedan. "number one, those taxes were approved at a local level first before it went statewide," said sen. david johnson, (r) ocheyedan. "so, in one respect we are taking away a local vote if we were to move that money." second, johnson says it won't be enough. the republican has written a bill which would add a 3/8 f a cent sales tax to generate money for a dedicated natural resources fund. "i don't know how better we can do it," johnson said. fellow senate republican randy feenstra, of hull, says water quality is important, but he maintains a new tax isn't the answer. "so, it's significant growth on top of what schools are already getting plus providing a share of that growth to water quality," branstad said. how much more? an additional $20.7-billion for school infrastructur e, and nearly $4.7-billion for water quality. "critics in the legislature say the penny tax was approved at the local level to help local schools before it was modified to help all schools equally," said matt breen. "and, moving that money robs iowans of the chance to vote on the new direction." branstad says he understands those concerns. but, when looking at the best ways to fund water quality and education, branstad says his plan is better that the alternative. "it puts in on property tax," branstad says. "this is a nation that has always valued merit over privilege. and hard work over entitlement and we have always been a nation that said yes. when other nations said no can't be done." fiorina will be in holstein this morning at midwest deli and grill. the meet and greet begins at 10 o'clock and is open to the public. presidential candidate, rick santorum, also stopped in siouxland yesterday. the rupublican spoke at the orange city, iowa. the candidate discussed the threat of isis and how he would put more boots on the ground if he were to win the presidential bid. the former pennsylvania senator explained why he's concerned about the combination of radical islam and the iran nuclear deal. he says there's two things he would do to solve the issues-- tear up the iran nuclear deal and take away the land isis operates on in the middle east. "we have american politicians who aren't honest with the american public about the nature of the threat we confront and tell the truth because we want to be politically correct, we don't want to offend anybody. well we've gotten to the point where we're more concerned about offending people then telling them the truth about a real threat that is now attacking us," said former pennsylvania senator and presidential candidate, rick santorum. santorum continues campaigning in iowa today. iowa lawmakers are hard at work now that the gavel has fallen on the opening day of the 2016 legislative session. there could be a fight over school funding, and that could dictate the budgeting process that has to get done before lawmakers leave des moines, in april. to tackle the budget sooner, and make a key component-- education-- one of the first things on the agenda. ktiv's matt breen has more from des moines. second, johnson says it won't be enough. the republican has written a bill which would add a 3/8 of a cent sales tax to generate money for a dedicated natural resources fund. "i don't know how better we can do it," johnson said. fellow senate republican randy feenstra, of hull, says water quality is important, but he maintains a new tax isn't the answer.
