>> announcer: nbc bay area news begins with breaking news. >> that breaking news, you can look at it right there, new images of flames pouring out of a building in san francisco as a fire quickly escalates to five alarms. people nearby told to shelter in place. good evening, everyone. i'm terry mcsweeney. the flames broke out around 2:00 in a building at 29th and mission streets in san francisco. that fire quickly spread, reaching four alarms in less than an hour. now nbc bay area's christie smith is there live. it looks like firefighters are getting the upper hand. what are you learning? >> reporter: they're working very hard. we're at five alarms, eight buildings involved. this is one of those buildings at 29th and mission. what you see out here right now is just ladder trucks, i count at least four or five of them, spraying water on the outside of these buildings. these are residential units, with businesses below. it started at 2:00, as you said, and grew quickly. there is a shelter-in-place for a five-block radius because of the thick smoke and flames that were going up. we could actually see smoke coming from several buildings, including pohl hardware. firefighters say because of the paint and other chemicals that may be involved, they wanted people to take proper precautions. no injuries to report. this is still an active fire and a fluid situation as they work to gain control. >> if you look at the ladder trucks that we have up, if you look on the ground, the large water pipes on the ground, those are there to put a large amount of water onto the fire to allow us to get these flames knocked down. once those flames are knocked down, the chief will allow the firefighters to go into the buildings to put out hotspots, and to, again, make sure there's nobody injured or in need of assistance. >> reporter: and it's unclear how many units are actually affected. i can tell you they're pouring so much water out here that it's actually cooling at intersections. so you certainly want to stay away, if you can. for those evacuated, we're told one option is the safeway parking lot to it information. to get information. at this point they hope to have containment tonight. i can tell you that the black smoke that we saw earlier, we're not seeing that much anymore. live in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> christie, thanks very much. the shock waves are still fresh tonight following the shake-up in the oakland police department as another police chief is ousted, the latest in what's been a tumultuous month for the department. two of the police chief's successors have stepped down, the latest paul figueroa, asked to leave after only three days on the job. the city administrator is now running the police department. today top city leaders are weighing in on the disarray. >> it's a situation that has to be fixed from top to bottom. the whole department has to be evaluated. i don't know how this can continue to exist like this in oakland. >> the changes come as oakland deals with two investigations involving its police officers. one involves a widening sex scandal that has spread to other departments and other cities. there's also a series of racest text messages sent within the department. now all eyes will be on sabrina landreth, the current city administrator, to see how she deals with her new role. mayor libby schaaf appointed her yesterday. she became oakland's city administrator last year. now police command staff will report to her. the mayor said, however, she will not be guiding investigations. her role is more administrative. firefighters are making good progress against a wildfire threatening homes and ranches near santa barbara. here is the latest on the sherpa fire. several communities in santa barbara county have been evacuated. right now 270 homes and structures are at risk. 76 acres have burned. i think that's 7600 acres have burned. the fire is 45% contained. firefighters gained ground overnight because there wasn't a whole lot of wind. >> we've had no life loss, no major injuries, and no major structure loss. that's a very good success. >> that's the good news. the bad news is the wind could return tonight. so helicopters and fire crews trying to get ahead of the fire before that happens. heat and dry weather here in the bay area is a concern. you look at those pictures and you wonder, is it coming our way? temperatures are expected to soar over the next few days. let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda to find out more about that. >> we're watching conditions in southern california. along the fire lines there, sherpa fire, west santa barbara, humidity levels are at about 40% and wind speeds at about 14 miles per hour. towards tomorrow morning, winds decreasing somewhat, but temperature increase through the afternoon. drier conditions, numbers in the 80s and 90s around the hills of santa barbara and closer to southern california and places like l.a. and palm springs, 90s to 115 degrees. that's a sample of what's happening. today around the bay area, not too bad. we managed some 80s inland around concord and livermore. the stage is being set to see that same ridge of high pressure build more towards central and northern california, putting us into temperatures soaring into the 90s, beginning as early as tomorrow. there you see the timestamp at the upper part of the screen, the first half of the week, which coincides with the official start of summer, feeling like it along the bay area. we'll have today after police say a driver tried to cut through a funeral profession for one of the victims in the mass shooting, and hit two deputies on motorcycles. police say one is in stable condition, the other in critical. more funerals are taking place this weekend for the victims in the deadly nightclub shooting. nbc's gabe gutierrez has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, more signs the orlando nightclub begunm gunman, omar mateen, may have been preparing to die. investigators say prior to the shooting, mateen made more purchases on his credit card as if he wasn't worried about paying them back. he also transferred his share of his home to his sister for $10 two and a half months for the shooting, his wife, noor zahi salman, a witness. she turned over an ipad, laptops, and cellphones. a family member tells nbc news she was beaten and battered. investigators say she never told them she was abused. >> this is stuff that you see in movies. >> reporter: it was four gunshot wounds that shattered tony marrero. but he is not broken. >> everybody was dropping on the floor dead. >> reporter: he is now walking, his family save orring the moment. >> i'm still here. >> reporter: reuniting with the officer who pulled him out of the nightclub. today, the sorrow lingers for those less fortunate. some are returning to puerto rico for burial. in orlando, the greenwood cemetery is creating a special burial space for those killed at pulse. like 25-year-old anthony dizla holding on tight. >> i don't have a child anymore. for you mothers who still have your kids and have grandkids, whatever you can do, whatever you contribute, make it happen. still ahead, a family releases their first statement after their 2-year-old son is killed by an alligator at a disney resort. plus back on solid alligator at a disney world resort this week released a new statement. they say they're devastated by the loss of their 2-year-old son layne and are overwhelmed with the support and love they've received. kerry sanders has the latest on the changes being made at the disney resort in the wake of the attack. >> reporter: this morning, on the closed beach near the seven seas lagoon where lane graves was killed on tuesday, a temporary barrier. new signs with pictures warning guests of the dangers of alligators and snakes. disney says they're working on long term solutions. but as they evaluate their procedures, more images surfacing of guests' encounters with gators. >> oh, my god! >> reporter: this video obtained by tmz shows an alligator climbing on a raft on disney rivers of america. this woman applauds the new changes but feels they're long overd overdue. >> it's such a shame, disney knew this was a problem. we wrote a letter, we complained. >> reporter: disney says in a statement, "we are reinforcing training with our casts for reporting sightings of wildlife." even with all the attention on this attack, some public relations experts believe this will not hurt disney loving, high-spirited people. coming up, belgian police crack down on terror. the steps taken today to try and prevent another attack. and back on earth. how astronauts on the international space station made it back safely today after six months in space. a developing story tonight out of belgium... where police havrded dozens ofomes and arres anti-terror operation. a developing story tonight out of belgium, where police have raided dozens of homes and arrested 12 people in a major antiterror operation. belgian police say the situation required immediate intervention. the homes searched were mostly in and around brussels. 40 people were taken for interrogation, 12 people arrested. the operation comes as belgium continues to be under the second highest level of alert in the wake of attacks back in march on the brussels subway and airport which killed 32 people. after six months in space, right on schedule, the crew of the international space station landed safely, carrying a british astronaut, and russian and a u.s. astronaut. they launched in december of 2015. they conducted hundreds of science experiments. the crew reported feeling fine as they slid off orbit and headed down to earth. meteorologist rob mayeda is here with your microclimate forecast. looks like triple-digit temperatures on the way. >> some part of the tri valley, we could get close to that on monday. you see over my shoulder clear skies for the most part around san francisco. father's day weekend, we'll see a warm-up. 70s and a few low 80s outside. tri valley at 81, 71 at san francisco. 79 around the north day. san jose, about 75 degrees with has a skies across the south bay. and south of downtown, seeing numbers in the 80s, around saratoga and santa theresa. brentwood, 87 degrees. 79 in livermore. cooler, where some of that marine air is pushing across the bay, 75 in alameda. we'll likely see 90s across the board for areas east of 680 tomorrow. pleasanton right now is has a with 81 degrees. san francisco, 71, and a little windy outside. we've got the sea breeze going out of the west at 24 miles per hour. and that for tonight will make things feel a little bit cool, closer to san francisco. 7:00, temperatures in the 60s. we'll see patchy low clouds out on the coast as we head towards tomorrow morning. and speaking of the forecast for your father's day plans along the beaches tomorrow, santa cruz the warmest spot, as numbers climb into the upper 70s. hot temperatures, upper 80s around reno tomorrow afternoon. 80s to low 90s starting tomorrow around the south bay. monday and tuesday will probably be the hottest days we see early next week. in the north bay, numbers in the 80s to low 90s. same trend for walnut creek and concord and the tri valley tomorrow, beginning to see temperatures climb as high pressure reaches peak intensity monday into tuesday. the five-day outlook for san francisco has mid-70s, cooling back into the 60s by thursday and friday. san jose, downtown, mid-90s south of downtown on monday. you can see pleasanton staying into the 90s through the middle part of the week. then a slow cooldown towards thursday and friday. and stay tuned for thursday and friday, pretty interesting. this ridge is going to weak and not weaken and slide off to the east. there may be a few showers north of sonoma county. at least it will reinforce that cooler air carrying through thursday into friday. next weekend, temperatures rebounding towards next sunday. that warm-up late next weekend not nearly as the weather we'll see here from sunday through tuesday, which coincides with the official start of summer, terry. >> rob, thanks a lot. we continue to follow breaking news at 29th and mission streets in san francisco where a series of buildings, following since the start of the show. firefighters are cleaning up after a massive fire burning at 29th and mission streets. marianne favro joins us live in san francisco from near that fire. marianne? >> reporter: yes, i'm here at the safeway parking lot on mission street. this is where the american red cross is helping the evacuees. you can see we're still very close to the fire. there are firefighters trying to extinguish the flames right now. we have dozens and dozens of people who have come here to this stage area. american red cross does not yet have a tally of people who need help at this time. they've told us they're working with the salvation army to set up a shelter so that people will have a place to spend the night. there is a shelter-in-place that has been issued for at least a two-block radius from the fire, including those who live on elsie and fulsome streets among others. firefighters are asking that those folks close their windows and doors to prevent smoke inhalation. the big concern is the particulate matter, the tiny matter that can get into your lungs and cause shortness of breath. it can also exacerbate problems for anyone who may have asthma or a heart condition. the other concern is that the chemicals that may have been inside pohl's hardware which also burned. as you might imagine, it would been be understandable to believe there was paint and chemicals inside that hardware store. right now what the red cross is doing is focusing on getting the names of people who have been forced to evacuate their homes and they're handing out water to make sure all the people here stay hydrated, because it is warm out here. live in san francisco, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> marianne, thanks very much for the update. we've got a heat wave hitting the bay area. rob is back with a final look at the forecast after this. updating you now on our breaking news out of san francisco. that huge fire at 29th and mission streets, you can see that firefighters have pretty much gotten the upper hand on it at this point. they still have a lot of work to do but they do have the upper hand on a fire that was raging through eight buildings, five alarms in san francisco, really tying up a lot of fire equipment. the good news is nobody injured, as far as we know, to this point. 40 people have been displaced by this fire. some of them going to a safeway parking lot where the red cross is setting up to help people out, marianne favro giving us a live report from there a few minutes ago. the fire is still burning inside the buildings which are blocked off in that area. rob mayeda joins us now, we saw the smoke coming out of that building and whipping around the corner. >> fire crews did a good job containing the area. embers could be blowing far away, with the winds 20 to 25 miles per hour racing over san francisco. tomorrow morning we'll see kind of a cool start, patchy clouds for the morning, with numbers in the 50s. but check out, if you have afternoon plans with dad for father's day, it will be a little bit toasty inland with 80s and 90s in the valleys. hot temperatures moving into the week. boxing on nbc is next. more
