heavily invested. this is one of several protests around the bay area which started in san francisco. a section of san francisco's market street was closed as demonstrators made their case for stopping the construction of the north dakota access pipe line. the company behind it awaits the approval of the army corps of engineers to build part of the pipeline under the missouri river. >> but it's like where is it safe to destroy people's water sources because it's got to go under the river in order to get to where it's going and it doesn't need to be going in the first place. >> reporter: maria cole lives in missouri. she's visiting her daughter in the bay area and felt she had to voice her disapproval. >> it's going to run downhill. it's going to affect the mid well. i'm from the midwest. it's coming through those states, and we are all going to suffer when the water is polluted. >> the north dakota access pipeline would run from north dakota to illinois transferring crude oil. it's 80% complee except for a section that would run under the missouri river. that site is near the standing rock indian reservation. yesterday the army corps of engineer halted the project saying additional discussion with the standing rock sioux tribe and analysis are warranted. energy transfer partners, which is behind the pipeline, criticized the army corps for engaging in what can only be described as a sham process that sends a frightening message about the rule of law. >> there's nothing that we do to the earth that we're not doing to ourselves. >> reporter: energy transfer alerts. the oklahoma city airport remains shut down this afternoon. heavily armed officers are looking for the person who shot and killed a 52-year-old southwest airlines worker outside of a parking garage. authorities immediately closed will rogers world airport and advised people inside to shelter in place. we're being told police are preparing to move people out of the airport. so far no information has been released about the suspects. five high school students who were stabbed by a classmate in the boys' locker room are hospitalized in orom, utah. the 16-year-old suspect is also being treated. he stabbed himself before a school resource officer subdued him with a taser. authorities haven't released a motive for the attack so far. the suspect was a new student with straight as who had previously been home-schooled. there are ongoing demonstrations protesting the presidential election nationwide. abc 7 news was in san mateo where students from aragon and san mateo high schools walked out of class. you can see the big crowd also gathering in athens, greece. at trump tower president-elect donald trump is meeting with vice president-elect mike pence and people are speaking out against the alleged hate crimes targeting minorities since the election. >> not my president! not my president! >> reporter: another day, another show of defiance. >> i'm out here as well to support women's rights and racial equality and pretty much everything he stands against. >> reporter: students from new york to d.c., some too young to vote but all worried about their future walking out of class and joining the ongoing protests against president-elect donald trump. >> the next four years, it really is up to us to kind of fight for the things that i think donald trump will change or will try to change. >> reporter: these daily marches and rallies across the country coinciding with the uptick in reports of hate crimes since election day. more than 300 hate incidents reported so far, most against minority and religious groups. among latest, an indiana church defaced with graffiti including a swastika and in massachusetts police investigating these threatening letters. >> we just wanted as a neighborhood to come out and say that it's not what we feel. we're very inclusive. >> reporter: now in a different show of solidarity against these alleged acts of hate neighbors are speaking out and students standing united. >> it's just absurd and horrible. that's why we're here tonight to show that we're against it. >> reporter: this scene at the university of michigan monday night after two muslim students reported falling victim to separate bias attacks. trump himself has also said he is saddened by these reports urging the perpetrators to stop and vowing he will work to bring our country back together. elizabeth husband abc news, new york. the mayor for the west virginia town of clay has resigned amid fallout from a racist facebook post about first lady michelle obama. beverly wayling stepped down. she had commented on a post from another city worker who referred to mrs. obama as an ape in. he's the woman behind the original post was removed from her job. twitter is expanding ways to curb the amount of abuse that users see. the san francisco-based company is expanding its mute function so starting now users will be able to mute key words, phrases and conversations that they just don't want to see. twitter also says it's making it easier to report hateful conduct and will also retrain its support teams about its policies and hateful commission ordered crowingan sports bar & grill to close at 12:30 a.m. instead of 2:30. the owners filed an appeal and told the city council on n a special meet i go it should be opened later. residents say an influx of young people can cause problems but shouldn't be too much for the city to handle. i think they should consult with san francisco and how they deal with it. the bars and restaurants there are open until 2:00 this morning. last call at 1:30. they are able to handle it and walnut creek could handle it as well. >> crowigan's has had several calls for police assistance and one man was murdered outside the bar. they have agreed to a dozen recommendations including serving more food. >> police in san francisco are searching for three suspects wanted in a brazen burglary. we have surveillance video of a break-in that occurred last month in the soma neighborhood. three suspects entered the building on channel street and got away with more than $100,000 in to $15 an hour ahead of the state's deadline. >> right now san francisco's minimum wage is $13 an hour and oakland's about l go up to 12.68 an hour in january. san jose is still at $10, the state's minimum wage. advocates are concerned san jose is falling behind in its commitment to make the minimum $15 an hour by 2019. >> abc 7 news reporter lonnie rivera joining us now at city hall where the council is talking to meat about the time line for this wage hike. >> reporter: yes, that's right. san jose city council is taking up the minimum wage item as we speak right now. they will be looking at things such as the time line and who might be exempt. all of those things are being taken up this evening for a vote. 35 employees work at fourth street pizza company in downtown san jose. the owner of this small business sees the pros and cons of a $15 wage hike by 2019. >> how expensive everything is in this area, people need a living wage. you know, i also kind of see it turns into a cycle where restaurants have to raise their prices and other stuff gets raised. >> reporter: that means higher prices on the menu to absorb the cost of raising salaries for his employees. outside this pizza shop advocates say a wage hike is long overdue in san jose. back in 2010, scott meyers lipton let san jose students in the fight for 15 movement. lipton says the city is dragging its feet with what began as a so-called regional approach. >> in six weeks from now mountianview and sunnyvale will going to go to $13 so we're going to be -- we're at 10.40 going up. they are going to 13. by july we'll go to 11 something or 12. that's too late. >> reporter: mayor sim lick yardo is common about the broad support for the wage increase, but the details of the time lines still needs to be ironed will finalizing the language of the minimum wage proposal. lonni rivera, abc 7 news. happening now in san francisco, public comment on a proposal to place even tighter restrictions on property owners to use sites like airbnb. city supervisors are planning to vote on proposed legislation to cut home-sharing rentals to just 60 nights a year. yesterday airbnb offered to cap rentals at 90 days, the city's current max. it also offered to create a mandatory registration system and provide names, addresses and other info to the city. the change of tone comes days after a judge indicated he would likely rule in favor of the city in a lawsuit over home-sharing regulations. jetblue is having a big sale but you need to act fast if you want to get in on this. some fares are below $100 round trip. bottomless pit. >> well, aaa is predicting thanksgiving travel this year will be the busiest since the great recession. the club is forecasting more than 48 million americans will hit the roads and take to the skies. more than 1 million americans will go 50 miles from home, a 2% increase over last year. one factor in the forecast, gas prices are the second lowest they have been in nearly a decade. >> well, this morning a san francisco woman accomplished something that has never been done before. her group successfully swam across the dead sea. >> yes. abc 7 news anchor kriningnchor s here with more live. >> reporter: these are the 28 swimmers who achieved impossible. among them kim chambers right there, a 39-year-old san francisco resident and cal berkeley alumni. she tweeted this lovely picture afterwards, but i want you to see what they did in seven hours. look at this, swimming nearly ten miles from jordan to israel in life-threatening conditions using special masks to guard against the extreme salt content which also makes the water dense and hard to push an arm into, so why take on this challenge? the international group wants to shine a light on the shrinking of this historic body of water due to farming issues. kim had trained for this in san francisco bay. abc 7 news did a story on her last year when she became the first woman to swim from the fairlawn islands to the golden gate bridge. kim talked about us by phone today after the swim. >> because it's so salty it was -- it actually could be potentially fatal if ingested in your lungs or stomach. we have a few aches and pains and a bit of chafing and some bloodshot eyes but overall we're pretty excited and -- and marveling at what we did. >> reporter: co-workers at adobe in san jose where kim is a community engagement manager are all extremely proud today. larry and ama? >> that is incredible. >> it is just amazing. i mean, you talk about the hours of training that would go into something like here's a look at current wind conditions. it's breezy in some spots. not terribly gusty. we have gusts to 13 miles per hour at novato and 20 miles per hour gusts at mountianview and, again, it's breeze out there and will be again tomorrow. here's view from the rooftop camera here at abc 7 looking out over the bay where it's mostly cloudy at the moment and these are our forecast futures. a cooler pattern for the next couple of days beginning tomorrow and chilly mornings will prevail the next two days as well and then rain arrives over the weekend along with clouds that will bring temperatures back up again. tonight's lows in the low 40s in the north day valleys at nappa and santa roseau. upper 40s and upper 50s around the bays and tomorrow's highs under mostly sunny skies, will range from upper 50s to about 60 at the coast. we'll see mainly low 60s and a couple mid-60s in some of the mildest locations inland and around the bay. cooler than today was. using the morning low indicators, average low is 40 in santa rosa. thursday morning a little chilly, one degree below the average. 39 degrees and look at how the lows bounce back quickly towards the end of the week as the clouds come in that will bring us our weekend rainfall and we'll see milder mornings in most locations then. storm impact scales. we range storms by their intensity -- rank their intensity numerically from 1 which is light to 5 which is very severe and the storm approaching ranks 1 is on the impact scale. it will bring light to moderate rainfall so let's skip ahead to 5:00 a.m. saturday. forecast animation. periods of rain developing and continuing through the day sunday and actually into sunday night and early monday morning and we project rainfall totals will be fairly substantial ranging from nearly .7 down in san jose to an inch and a half or more up in santa rosa. looks like a wet weekend if this forecast holds up. cooling down tomorrow and thursday, and it will warm up again friday afternoon. rain arrives saturday. storm ranks a 1 as it will also on sunday. rain will taper off on monday morning though there could be some lingering early morning showers and we'll get partly cloudy skies going into the early days of next week. doesn't look like we're going to get much of a warmup next week so we're probably locked into a more seasonal temperature range today protesting an oil pipeline project in north dakota. hundreds of people concerned about the environmental impact marched through the city chanting water is life. jessica castro with abc 7 mornings tweeted this photo showing this group sitting in the middle of market street and they also walked to the army corps of engineers regional headquarters. the army corps will decide if that project will continue or be altered. reporter vic lee tweeted showing hundreds of students marching in protest of the election results. as vic tells us at 5:00, this will come at a price. donald trump's first major decisions as the president-elect are drawing criticism from many with democrats on capitol hill petitioning against one of his newly appointed team members. meanwhile, republicans working on their united front. here's abc news reporter maggi rulli. >> reporter: president-elect donald trump received his first presidential briefing today in trump tower from. now on trump and mike pence will get the same daily updates as president obama. >> he's going to be a great president, really is. >> reporter: trump's team is rallying around him. there's now speculation that secretary of state will go to either former new york city mayor rudy giuliani or former u.n. ambassador john bolton. one name definitely not on the list anywhere in his cabinet, ben carson. abc news has learned that the former gop presidential candidate has taken himself out of the running. but there's one appointee who has already been confirmed by trump polarizing politicians on the hill. stephen bannon. recently the editor of breitbart, a conservative news outlet considered to be a voice for white nationalists. democrats in congress are signing a letter to the president-elect urging him to rescind balanced approach when it comes to talking bannon. >> this is a person who helped him win an incredible victory and incredible campaign. the president is going to be judged on the results of this thanksgiving and while pelosi is downplaying the significance of that development, others are saying it's time for a change. she's been the democratic leader in the house, including speaker, for 14 years, but now it seems the role of san francisco's nancy pelosi is in jeopardy. >> it's not clear who the leadership of this party is at this point. >> reporter: steve wolford professor of politics. >> i think there is a fundamental polarization going on in this country, and the democratic party has to decide what it wants to do to rebuild a winning coalition. >> reporter: the potential shake-up at the top comes after democrats were soundly beaten in last week's election from hillary clinton on down, a result some say pelosi should have seen coming. >> leader pelosi has been a stalwart and a great leader for our party. >> reporter: but others like contra costa democratic central committee member jerome andel says he sees the san francisco democrat as the best choice to lead the party into the future, especially during a trump administration. >> i understand the inkling and the interest that some members may have in making a leadership change, but one of the things that's been the hallmark of pelosi's leadership of our house democratic caucus is whenever members come to here, even just a few of them in expressing concerns about how things are done, she listens. >> reporter: the democrats now have their leadership votes set for november 30th so challengers to pelosi have two weeks to step up. laura anthony, abc 7 news. former san francisco mayor gavin newsome trying to climb the political heard but says he has no desire to run for president. in an interview at the code enterprise conference in san francisco today he says he thinks it seems like the most miserable job in the world and doesn't even want to talk about it. newsome, however, is running for governor of california in the 2018 election. french president francois hollande says the paris agreement to fight climate change is irreversible and the trump administration must respect the decision by president obama to join the pact. hollande says france will hold a respectful dialogue with president-elect donald trump on climate change and demands u.s. involvement on behalf of the almost 200 countries that have ratified the 2015 deal. trump has called global warming a hoax and has pledged to cancel the landmark climate agreement. happening now. dozens of wildfires burning across the southeastern u.s. more than 100,000 acres have burned in six states. outdoor burn bans have been issued. there are air quality warnings that in some cases mandatory evacuation orders. investigators say many of the fires were intentionally set in one case and this is just hard to believe but true. a man confessed he started a fire in eastern kentucky to get more facebook followers. >> an official for new york city transit says the agency needs to give more thought for adding safety barriers on subway platforms. 44 people have been killed by trains in the city this year, either by jumping on to the tracks or being pushed off the platforms. there were 50 fatalities in 2015. the agency currently has a pilot >> we won't know until we pull them. >> lots of hope as we kick off the commercial crab season after last year's disastrous delay. >> i'm 7 on your side's michael finney. there's a new reason to pack light the next time you travel. the bag exchange ann crab season got under way and didn't take long for the first catch to arrive in san francisco. >> abc 7 was at pier had a when the first boats arrived a few hours ago to unload crates filled with krabds. fishermen say crabbing has been kind of spotty so far because of the weather. you'll recall a dangerous toxin shortened last year's season and really devastated the crab industry. >> abc 7 news reporter matt keller tells us there's a lot of hope out there for a big catch this year. >> reporter: the pots at the santa cruz harbor are filled with hope but upon return there better be more than that. >> hope they are stuffed with crab, dungeness. >> reporter: hundreds were up before the otters came out to play kicking off the official crab season. >> we won't know until we pull them so, you know, just see what happens in the next couple of days. it will be real telling >> reporter: sport fishermen got first crab at the crack and are reporting few in the pots in the monterrey bay. commercial fishermen deep into the deeper water where more crab may be but anything is better than last season. >> i'm glad that the crab are well and edible and i just -- it's a little weight off my shoulder. >> reporter: last season was delayed several months until long after the holidays were over after dangerous levels of acid was found in the crab. the fishing industry lost millions. >> yeah, i'm still suffering the effects. i think everyone is. >> reporter: kevin me lg er is the captain of "the puffin" and has hundreds of pots going out this week. the key, catching the crab when they are in demand for the holiday season. >> they didn't have a lot of crab last year so they are pretty happy. everyone wants it during thanksgiving and christmas and new years. it's nice. they will get it this year. >> reporter: right now the purchase price has not been agreed upon and i did talk to several people and they said the wholesale price will be around $3 a pound and that means when you go to the market it will be about $6 a pound. in santa cruz, matt keller, abc news. on to consumer news and united is making changes that you normally only see with no-frill airlines. >> 7 on your side's michael finney has the details. >>-ins a game-changer. >> you think so?
