the storms rises to nearly 50 in kentucky one of the hardest-hit states, the governor said earlier today that his state alone may end up losing more than 100 of his citizens. the governor is scheduled to hold a press conference coming up in the next hour or so on the cleanup and the rescue progress which continues along with homeland security's chief, also traveling there as we speak. we'll bring you that live coming up. meanwhile in illinois, we're learning the identities of the six people who died at the moinds facility in edwardsville when a tornado caused a partial collapse of a building there, trapping workers inside. the victims range in age from just 26 years old to 62. the department is currently working with representatives of amazon to account for all the personnel who are believed to be in the building at that time. and take a look at this. it's new satellite images that show the level of devastation across illinois, along with arkansas and kentucky. factories were wrecked along with nursing homes, badly damaged. historic buildings decimated downtowns just levelled. we are going to be joined in a few moments. we're having technical difficulties, but right now we'll go to the hardest hit area, mayfield, kentucky. we've seen such devastation there. wendy? >> reporter: good afternoon. it's incredible. it's no exaggeration to say that everywhere you look here in downtown mayfield, kentucky, you're going to see a story. today is about cleaning up, but we have spoken to a large group of people who are just trying to help out. we spoke to a huge group of guys. they drove in from nashville. they're born and bred kentucky. they came because their community needed help. so they're here. we met another woman who was cleaning up her husband's law firm, and they were salvaging both files and documents. anything they could find. but they're thankful they also had a vault for things that were ir relaceable. then two doors down from the law firm, we met a 70-year-old man who survived the tornado in his home and was sadly, today, still searching for his cats. >> there are no words. it's just absolutely -- well, it's just a blessing that nobody was here that it happened at night. that's the first thing, because nobody could survive it. >> reporter: what brings you out here? >> they called and a couple other friends of ours from nashville called last night and said you want to go down and help? so we hopped in the truck and came down. >> reporter: but just because? >> yeah. we were born in kentucky. i mean, this is terrible. it's right down the road. >> reporter: what do you think? >> it's as bad as i thought on tv. >> i miss my two cats, though. >> reporter: your cats were in there? >> they were. >> reporter: i'm no sorry. >> yeah. i was ducked down in that hallway through that doorway right there. >> reporter: about what time? >> 9:30 when it hit. i was in the dining room doing something. the lights went out, and i heard it coming. and i jumped in the hallway, ducked down. my ears started popping, and then it hit. the walls on the other side are all blown out. and i stayed there at night, too. >> reporter: i must say i've done this for a very long time, and that man literally brought me to tears this afternoon. i'm telling you, everywhere you look you're going to see destruction. you can probably hear in the background all the chain saws that are going just to stop some of these limbs from causing any more damage around here. also, take a look at just this one house beside us. people want to talk a lot about oh, if you're in a brick house, then you're safe in a tornado. look. a pile of bricks right here. you look back behind me, you probably can't make it out in the distance. that's the post office. i can promise you none of the christmas cards, packages sent here in the past couple weeks are going to make it. it's not a laughing matter. these are real stories everywhere you turn. and these people's lives are in shambles. but i've got to tell you, the survival stories they talk about, they're just thankful to be alive. possessions you can replace, but it's people you cannot. i can also give you a bunch of breaking news in regards to the candle factory we've been talking about. i spent the spire day there yesterday. it's literally just a half mile down the road behind me, and you can't make it out because of all the damage. nbc news has been able to confirm now that there were eight fatalities so far. 36 people still missing. and two people were rescued yesterday and still in the hospital. i want to remind you there were 110 people in that factory late friday night, working the third shift of the day because of this busy holiday season. we are still hoping and praying that there is going to be a miracle in that pile of rubble and we'll keep you posted to see after the next press conference what they might find. back to you. that's the latest from here. >> wendy, ks breathtaking seeing the massive destruction there. so often covering tornadoes, you'll see a line of debris, and that just looks so widespread. are you seeing lots of people come back already trying to find any possessions they can salvage it looks like? >> reporter: it is incredible the number of people who are out here. some who lived here. because this is kind of a dotted area of, like, the town hall, the town bank, the courthouse, but also the houses that you'll see just peppered up and down this street. people who have had their lives here. i heard one family spent 32 years here and they lost everything but they have all of their people safe and sound. like i said before, people who have driven from all communities, all walks of life, just to come here and help clean up because they say their fellow human beings, there community needed help, and they want to be here for them. >> such an important perspective from the ground. wendy reporting for us in mayfield, kentucky. wendy, thank you. joining me now, mayfield resident, steven elder. steve, how are you doing? how is your family doing today? >> we're doing fine. we were just a few blocks from the court square which had all the issues, but we're absolutely fine. my family is safe. and so it's just a scary struggle, and the devastation that you guys were just showing is just remarkable. >> we're glad to hear your family is safe, the most important thing there. can you tell me about that night, where you and your family were and what you saw and heard? >> the call came out at 9:20 from our local nbc news station that said mayfield, it's coming for you. get to your interior wall, your basement. it's sixing to happen. and it probably was twenty minutes after that that my sister-in-law came by to get into the basement as well. my family was already in the basement. and you could hear the roar and the scary moment of that tornado coming through your town. it's a feeling that i've never felt in my life. the temperature in the air was like hot and cold, and just erie. i have never been more scared than that moment and ran down to the basement. and it was over. it came through but we were safe. so -- >> yes. steven, i know tornado watches and warnings aren't unexpected in this area. have you been through a tornado before, and was this different? >> you know, we have. we've had tornado watches and warnings my whole life. it's something we always take seriously as we should. but this one did seem different. i mean, they were telling us a few days prior that this was serious. so they cancelled basketball games, events that night, and you know, they hardly ever do that, so they were showing us years ago when we would have tornadoes at this time, you know, that they could project and see this was going to be something big. and then when it was happening, when it was coming through, i guess arkansas and missouri and you could see the debris field, the debris field, you knew something big was fixing to hit your town. so it was scary. it was absolutely scary and devastating. but i just saw, again, your reporting. i've always felt the same way. if you're in a brick home, you're safe. there are brick homes all in mayfield that are just -- it sliced right through them. the churches that have been there for hundreds of years, sliced through them. our courthouse cut in half. things that you never would have imagine that you'd see or that anything could make that happen other than a bomb, this tornado did that. >> yeah. it certainly looks like a bomb or something like it went off there in mayfield. do you feel there was an adequate warning? it sounds like you were being told this could be serious. do you think the night of you had enough warning of the storm? >> yeah. i felt personally that i had enough of a warning. you know, we had coverage right up until the time that it happened. i mean, as soon as the lights cut and we lost power is when the tornado had came through. so i think our local station did a great job of saving lives. i mean, they just did. people took their advice, and i think got to cover as much as they could. looking at the homes and the destruction, you know, some people probably were in their cars and just couldn't make it. so it's a sad situation. >> yeah. sad. it just begins to cover it. so much devastation, but continuing to see from the sky right now, steven. i understand you're heading up a lot of relief efforts. i know it's always a challenge in these situations. people may not realize cell phone service is spotty. it's hard to go back and start leaning up. how are you guys doing that? >> it is. it is spotty. i've had an outpouring of support that people want to come in and help and assist. messages and i try to get back to folks as much as i can. text doesn't seem to be working. calls seem to. social media is almost just nonexistent. i'm trying to get any kind of information out there. it's kind of difficult. once you get on the outs, just the outskirts of mayfield, you can get a little bit of coverage to try to send something and get back in town, but it's very spotty and hard, but we've had a number of people that are just wanting to help. they come in and say what can i do? how can i assist? we've had a lot of donations from food and water. a lot of the surrounding communities have brought in their food trucks and provided free food. people don't think we don't have water or electricity. it's been said it could be days from now for that to happen. so we have started relief funds. there's a few opportunities for people that want to give. the mayfield community foundation has theirs up and running and that could be donated through go fund me. the sheriff's department is also setting up a local relief fund. the governor has set up a western kentucky relief fund, because we're not the only town in kentucky hit. we were maybe hit the hardest, but there's hurt all across western kentucky. >> hurt, indeed. you can see it visibly from the sky from these shots and on the ground from our reporters there. our thoughts are certainly with you guys and thank you for sharing that information on how people can help. that's steven elder bringing us that latest from kentucky. and a reminder that kentucky governor will give an update on his state. that should be coming up in the next hour. we're monitoring that. we'll bring it to you live just as soon as it happens. and we expect to have yaz min back with us soon. criminal contempt after turning over an arsenal of evidence in the january 6th investigation. former president trump's former chief of staff stops short, defying a subpoena. we could get our first look at charges against mark meadows by the end of the day. and a california congressman, ro khanna joins me live with reaction plus the future of the build back better bill. we'll be right back. bill we'll be right back. re... ...demands a lotion this pure. new gold bond pure moisture lotion. 24-hour hydration. no parabens, dyes, or fragrances. gold bond. champion your skin. >> our democracy is on the line. voting rights has to be the top issue forrer person, every democrat serving in congress. we need to pass this. we need to pass this in january. it passed the house. it can pass the senate. every democrat from the president to the senate majority leader j speaker, needs to be saying that this is a must-pass bill in america every person ought to have the right to vote and many states are curtailing that right. and then we need to be really concerned about what's happening in some of these states where they're empowering state legislators to possibly have an alternative slate in a presidential election whereas state legislature could send a slate that doesn't win the popular vote in that state. so democracy reform really has to be at the top of our agenda. >> when you look at the january 6th investigation, the idea is to figure out what went wrong. who should be held responsible and make sure it doesn't happen again. when you have folks like bannon and meadows refusing to testify, how is it that congress plans on getting the information that they need? >> it makes it much harder. i have confidence in our chair, bennie thompson, that he will find a way to get the documents he needs. the information he needs, but obviously they're putting up roadblocks, and you identified the key issue. it's not just about accountability which is important. it's about making sure this never happens again. i don't understand how anyone who watched the scenes on television wouldn't be horrified. we looked weak to the world having our capitol overrun. we need to make sure there's a clear plan that something like that never happens in the united states of america again. >> let's talk build back better. while i have you. you got it through the house. a lot of concessions were made there. we know manchin was looked in the eye and it was said if we pass hard infrastructure, assure me we're going to get build back better passed. so far it's a no go. are more concessions going to have to be made to get this through the senate? the lack of electricity there and the lack of service is just -- it's making it a much scarier situation far lot of people, and you see these images, and it's scary enough. >> yeah. i mean, i'm sure -- you know, there are situations in which people are hoping and praying they're not hearing from their family members because of the lack of electricity, of internet, of phone service. hopefully if that gets up and going again, they'll hear from them, but nonetheless, there are still so many people missing. let's kind of talk first about the electricity situation, because we know there are thousands upon thousands of people without any electricity. it was extremely cold overnight. people without housing having to seek shelter. where are we on that? what's the situation, and how are they working to get things up and running once again for folks whose homes are still intact? >> yeah. the lack of power has been an issue, obviously, since late friday night, early saturday morning. it's been temperatures in the 30s for the most part. it's a little warmer today, but last night it was very cold. power outages were really widespread in much of the state yesterday. even in louisville, i know people who were without power for 15, 16 hours, got it restored midday yesterday. but yeah, out there in hopkins county, i think there's still 5,000 or so without power. in mayfield right there, i mean, there's -- you can see the images right there. i don't know where you're getting power there. there's several thousand without power there. so it's a struggle to get it back up. and just be amount of damage and the amount of just destruction out there has slowed efforts a little bit, but thankfully it's a clear day, so that's hopefully helping things along. but it's still a huge issue. there's still tens of thousands without power, and that's been the case now for, you know, 36 or so hours almost. >> yeah. and of course, the priority number one here is to find any remaining survivors, and the hope is to find as many remaining survivors as possible beneath that rubble until they can tackle the electric situation. lucas, thank you from the cure your journal, we appreciate you reporting and joining us. we have more on the tornadoes ahead including the news conference from the kentucky governor as soon as it's up and running. we'll bring it to you. i want to turn the politics for a moment. i'm talking about former vice president pence having a busy schedule ahead of the midterms with visited slated with georgia, texas, california as well. all signs are pointing to a possible 2024 run. but our next guest says that trump's shadow looms over any presidential ambitions that he may have. nbc's jonathan al seasonen -- jonathan allen is joining me with more on this. walk us through the former vice president's moves here. why the prediction essentially that it's likely he's going to see a 2024 run, and you write, though, for weeks how he's kind of played coy about this. >> yeah. absolutely. kristen welker and i worked on a story with this with a team. and mike pence is trying to test the waters, trying to put himself in a position where he could run for president. his folks close to him, his inner circle says that he would run whether or not president trump runs. i think most outside political analysts say it's unlikely pence will run if trump runs. it would be difficult to make an argument that he is better for the republican party than donald trump, and certainly the base is still upset with mike pence for certifying the election results as was his duty as vice president of the united states. >> how does the trump, though, shadow loom for the former vice president if, in fact, he does choose to run, whether or not, irrespective of whether or not the former president runs. for folks that supported the former president, as we know on january 6th, people were rioting and storming the capitol and calling for pence's life. for folks that were not supportive of the former president but still republican would see pence as being his former vice president in lock step with the former president for four years. how will that shadow loom if he chooses to run again? >> well, i think you nailed it on the head there. there's a degree to which it's impossible for pence to separate himself from trump on the policies. you know, they work the same agenda. certainly very difficult, and in terms of the politics, the place where mike pence has the most separation or where it is most clear and where voters are going to be reminded of it month after month after month is that certification of the votes in the january 6th riot, because you've got a house select committee talking about it constantly, still doing subpoenas and holding people in contempt for not complying with them as you were showing in the recent bracket you had up. this is a difficult and narrow needle for pence to try to thread. that said, you know, we'll see what his arguments to voters is come 2023 which is basically when he's saying he'll make a decision about whether to run. >> if they're both in it, i have to say, that would be a very awkward primary, but i feel like it's going to be an awkward primary either way. it's going to be a tough year, too, for all of us as we watch and cover it. jonathan allen, as always, thank you. great to talk to you. still ahead, covid crackdown. as rising cases bring the return of restrictions, pushback against proof of vaccination spark political conflict. we're live in california with the real life impact, coming up. like pulsing, electric shocks, sharp, stabbing pains, or an intense burning sensation. what is this nightmare?
