reports. we begin this sunday, boxing day, with omicron wreaking havoc coast-to-coast. in just a week s time, 1.3 million americans testing positive for covid, an average of 190,000 new cases per day, the highest case average we ve seen in a year. a silver lining, if there is one, new research from the uk signaling while the omicron variant is more transmissible, it produces milder symptoms, especially in breakthrough cases. but not for the unvaccinated. omicron is hitting those patients hard, overwhelming hospitals and stretching front line workers thin. case in point, new mexico. 50% of all hospitals are critically understaffed and 75% of hospital beds are occupied. south carolina, a third of hospitals are short-staffed. 76 of hospital beds occupied there. moving to california, nearly 30% of hospitals report a critical staffing shortage and close to 80% of hospital beds statewide are in use. another reason for alarm this sunday. an uptick in children being infected and hos
