the investigators, and then the results will be driven by the facts that are determined. >> follow-up, please. before the facts are in, is it helpful to your investigation for the president of the united states to use inflammatory language like people being strapped? >> let me just be very clear and repeat what i've said. i am not concerned with respect to the integrity of the investigation. we know how to conduct an investigation with integrity. i served 12 years as a federal prosecutor. there were a great deal of comments in many of the cases that i handled in the public sphere and i know how to maintain the integrity of an investigation and this investigation will have integrity. >> mr. secretary, thank you. our title 42, title 42 expulsion sending haitians back to danger in haiti immoral? yes or no? >> no, they are not. driven by a public health imperative. >> and -- >> let me explain. because let me be quite clear. we do not conduct ourselves in an immoral way. we do not conduct ourselves in an unethical way. in fact, in fact, we are restoring people by reason of the immorality of the past administration. we are reuniting families that were separated. let me explain something, the reality of the situation, because we're dealing with a great number of individuals who are encountered at the border in a congregant setting and placed in customs and border protection in border patrol stations. and that can cause the significant spread of a pandemic. and it is in light of the operational realities that the centers for disease control made a determination in its public health expertise that title 42 authority must be exercised. it is a statutory authority and they made the determination that the public health of the migrants themselves, our personnel, local communities, and the american public require it. and that is why we are exercising that authority to serve the public health. over 600,000 americans died. more than 40 u.s. border protection personnel have died. many migrants have gotten sick. we are doing this out of a public health need. it is not an immigration policy. it is not an immigration policy that we would embrace. >> last one. >> -- a question. >> congregation under the bridge, congregating, mentioning covid. what is the situation there? i know that the crowd has been dispersed. do we know who has tested positive and people got sick, any kind of symptoms among this group of 15,000, you said? >> yes. so we do not test -- we did not test that population of individuals. we do not -- i do not know, i should say, if i may be perfectly accurate. i do not know whether anyone was sick with covid. we certainly had some individuals get sick. not specifically with covid, to my knowledge, and we addressed their illnesses. in fact, we set up medical tents that had a certain standard of ability to address medical needs. it is -- it was -- it's hot in del rio, texas. we had cases of dehydration. we had other situations, and that is precisely why we search 1 -- approximately 150 medical professionals to address the medical needs of that population. that is why we set up medical facilities with the appropriate equipment to address their medical needs. and i must say, what i saw of the border patrol and other personnel was, quite frankly, heroic. they took -- this is not their -- their customary obligations, and yet they took great pride in addressing the needs of the people. >> mr. secretary, your statement, we are -- the actual treatment of haitian -- immigrants -- not just in this administration but administrations of both parties going back decades. and you seem to be distinguishing between violence and violence. what is the difference between the type of violence that haitians -- >> i'm sorry? >> -- are fleeing in haiti and the type of devastation and -- and -- and other devastation that they -- as compared to other immigrants and asylum seekers? democrats left and right, up and down, talking about the violence people have been -- in central america and south america, and -- the president even during his campaign talked about the fact that this created a need to create a pathway and an asylum system. this doesn't seem to be the case when it comes to haitians. >> oh -- >> -- is there true representation of the way haitian immigrants and -- immigrants of african descent have been greeted -- >> i respectfully disagree with you. and let me say a statement. >> you have for the past 20 years. i have some experience with it. >> i wasn't commenting on your personal experience, sir, oh, no, no, and i am an immigrant as well. i was respectfully disagreeing with an assertion that you made, if i may. if i may -- an asylum claim is determined based on the facts that are presented in the individual case. in fact, the title 42 authority has been applied to irregular migration since the very beginning of this administration and before, and it has applied to individuals from guatemala, honduras, el salvador and other countries. it has been applied equally, and the exceptions that i cited have been the exceptions that have applied to all. there are three exceptions. the convention against torture, acute vulnerabilities such as extreme medical needs and operational capacity. those are the three exceptions. title 42 authority has been applied irrespective of the country of origin, irrespective of the race of the individual, irrespective of other criteria that don't belong in our adjudicative process and we do not nermt our adjudicative process. >> thank you -- >> of course -- >> sir, that is something that horrified us all. and you know this morning i was on radio, and the interviewer said that it was troubled very profoundly the black and the african-american community, and i said one thing. and this should be clear. those are not the only communities that it horrified. those are not the only communities that it concerned. of course, that concern might be most acute, given the history in this country and in other parts of the world, but all of america is horrified to see what those images suggest. >> thank you. >> mr. secretary, appreciate your time. he'll come back. i promise. lots of questions but we have to let him go back to his job. >> thank you, mr. secretary. >> thank you. >> thank you, secretary mayorkas. >> you're always invited. open invitation. okay. two items for all of you at the top in addition today the treasury department released data on the emergency rental assistance program which shows that through the month of august state and local era programs emergency rental assistance programs distributed more than $1.4 million payments to households toeltszs more than $7.7 billion to support the housing stability of vulnerable renters and landlords. sos 420,000 households in august. increased about 24% since july. you have been watching, of course, the homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas speaking from the press briefing room at the white house. breaking news developed late this afternoon on msnbc "hallie jackson reports." i'm hallie jackson. relating to the situation we've been covered in del rio. bring in just over the border in mexico. mike memoli at the white house and two buckets to put the headlines in. one, that bridge in del rio were thousands of migrants coming from haiti had been gathering. haitian migrants, i should say. cleared. the secretary saying some have been, have gone back to haiti. some distributed to other processing centers. some of these folks. also defending the accesses of the administration to our own peter alexander not immoral essentially talking about the public health need to be able to disperse those people who gathered due to crisis in haiti. he also defended the integrity of the investigation into those images that he described and you heard him forcefully at the end there describe as horrifying to him. some of these officers, these border patrol folks on horseback. images that came out earlier in the week create add firestorm and an investigation now happening into that. mike memoli to you on this. a number of headlines coming out of this briefing? >> reporter: right, hallie. you've seen the biden administration grappling with over the last two weeks or so with this del rio surge are two very different issues. first you have the bureaucratic logistical and yes humanitarian issues presented by so many. 30,000 maxing out as the second laid out there at this one checkpoint. unbelievable humanitarian challenge for the administration to deal with, but what is really driving a lot of the conversation and why it made headlines that the secretary was coming to the briefing room today was some of the images we've seen during the course of the last few weeks at the border. these horseback-riding border patrol agents and some of the ways in which they have been dealing with the individuals at the border. you heard the president today talking about this as outrageous, saying that there will be accountability for those who were engaging in this behavior. you heard the vice president, who's been outspoken throughout the week about this once again today saying she was outraged by this as well and ultimately you heard secretary mayorkas laying out the investigation that is ongoing now and his own reaction to this. let's play what the secretary said at the start of this news conference there. >> in the midst of meeting these challenges we, our entire nation, saw horrifying images that do not reflect who we are, who we aspire to be, or the integrity and values of ow truly heroic personnel. let me be clear. the department does not tolerate any mistreatment of any migrants and will not tolerate any violation of its principles, values and ethics. >> reporter: once again we announced today here at the white house, there is no longer any migrants at this del rio checkpoint. from a number of 30,000 total over the course of the last few weeks 15shgs,000 at one point at maximum. the number one way in which these individuals are being expelled is through what's calmed that title 42 authority. >> right. >> having to do with the pandemic. that was the question peter alexander posed. there is pressure on the administration including primarily from democrats in congress who want to see relaxing of that not only and relaxing of asylum claims. the secretary clearly laying out, though, he does not believe what the administration is doing is immoral here but clearly ongoing logistical challenges here, hallie. >> and quad to you and what it's like on the ground where you are. >> reporter: hallie, lots of pieces to this puzzle one has to keep in mind. one thing we should all know this isn't a new problem. these aren't migrants that left haiti after the last earthquake in august, they tell us they led years ago. in chile, tried looking for work. the pandemic made it more difficult and a lot to mexico and now to the boarder. an ongoing problem. estimating thousands more remain in mexico. some in the capital. others still crossing the border from guatemala into mexico trying to get permits to work in mexico. many others left this year in del rio. people telling me they made their way a few miles in each direction to try to get into the u.s. assess problem that will continue because of the numbers inside the country. so there needs to be a plan to help the haitian migrants across all of latin america that have been going around these countries for years. this is what they have been telling us. they want help from the haitian government, from someone, from some type of government to establishment themselves somewhere where they can just work. it isn't a new problem. the camp was already cleared north of us on the american side but there's still a camp on the mexican side with hundreds of haitians waiting to decide what they're going to do interesting there, too, guad. mike, you know thid. secretary mayorkas put in a pitch for comprehension new reforms. talk about the number of people that need to be processed through the immigration system. these are thousands of people. what's the plan? >> reporter: one of the most interesting things we heard from the secretary, for those who have not been evacuated. 17 evacuation flights back to haiti. he said the u.s. will continue to play a role helping that haitian government to deal with them. >> right. >> reporter: i believe it was 2,000 individuals of the 30,000 who have surged to the border now back in haiti. a number who voluntarily went back to mexico, but then the vast majority of these individuals are now being scattered throughout different border processing facilities. >> right. >> reporter: at the border. what the secretary made clear, most of them are in fact going to be turned away. there is a very high bar as he reiterated for a claim of asylum here. again, democrats are among those who say that that claim should be relaxed here given the circumstances, given the really broken government in haiti right now. the secretary reiterated that was not going to be the case and that was as you say, hallie, when the secretary pivoted back to the need for comprehensive immigration reform. it's clear here that the white house knows the difficult politics of immigration, incredible complexity of this issue and for now doing everything to follow the existing laws as they are while showing as they, much as they can the need to be in a humanitarian mode. the heard the second even as he was reiterating this investigation will go forward, there will be consequences for those who behavior was show about hornet here, he also singled out those who are engaging in sort of a role at the border patrol that is beyond what they're supposed to do. engaging in humanitarian work it try to, he put it, even save live there's. very difficult balancing act here for the secretary and for the administration as whole. ultimately one they say rests on the need for immigration reform. >> mike memoli live at the white house. guad across the boarder in mexico from del rio, texas. guad, looking for more of your reporting tonight on "nbc nightly news." thanks to the both of you. a lot of headlines developing in the last hour on that front and on another front, too. maybe -- maybe -- a potential breakthrough among democrats on the way forward with the president's agenda. what the progressive caucus leader just said on our air. we're going to bring it to you and talk about what it means. plus, historic meeting at the white house between the leaders of four nations. our other andrea mitchell breaks down what happened when we come back. down what happened when we come back. wow, that's a low price. wow, that's a low price. huh. that is a low price. what's a low price? and that's the question as speaker pelosi said node a letter to her colleagues, and also to reporters that she will not only vote on this bipartisan infrastructure bill next week but also vote on this other human infrastructure bill next week as well. and that is mystifying us, because we don't see an agreement with all 50 democrats and all house democrats as well in order for these to pass. listen to what speaer pelosi told reporters. >> will the vote still happen for sure on monday? the infrastructure bill? >> what about the reconciliation? is that -- >> we're very encouraged. >> reporter: moving forward, they are going to have to work all weekend. they have to not only get agreement between the house and the senate. they're going to have to get the support of senator joe manchin, and that is really what is complicating all of this, hallie, because what progressives want is, they want a clear understanding of what senator joe manchin and kyrsten sinema want. something they have not been very clear about with democratic leadership. something they've not been clear about with progressives. representative told us on these airwaves there could be a meeting between the two of them very soon, and perhaps that is the breakthrough that's necessary, but it's going to be a very interesting week, and a colossal achievement if speaker pelosi is able to pull these two votes off. hallie? >> looking at monday and what goes down. leigh ann caldwell, a lot of developments on that front. and the first-ever summit of four allies. >> this group being of democratic partners who share a world view and have a common vision for the future coming together to take on key challenges of our age. >> nbc news chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell joins us now. andrea, great to have you on our show in our new afternoon slot. the president talk and common challenges. covid, climate and importantly china. >> importantly china. so right, hallie. look, he gave a u.n. speech which never mentioned the worried "china" but it was all about china. it was all about going up against china, about china's aggressiveness and that was certainly the subtext of his extraordinary decision to link um with the uk and australia and really, really upset the french by cutting the french out of a nuclear submarine deal with australia. all about building up strength against china. that's the subtext of this, talking about trade and a lot of issues like, for instance, semiconductors. trying to do something about the shortages on the semiconductor supply chain, which importantly is shutting down auto plants here in the u.s., because they can't get enough semiconductors for all of these late-model cars we're so relying on computers, and that technology. you know, there's so many things here to detailing with. here's the irony. talking about trying to get together on this trade, these trade issues, when china is trying to enter the very regional trade deal which used to be called the tpp, that donald trump exited, and that, of course, gives china a big opening. in any case, the japanese leader is a lame duck. he's leaving office early, in fact. not going to run for another term. but you've got these other leaders who have considerable stake in going up against china. especially in the south china sea. >> another foreign policy exchange with iran. exclusive with the foreign minister and new reaction in the last hour from the state department on that exclusive with a spokesperson for the state department saying they have not received clarity on the idea of iran being at the negotiating table. talk us through what this means and what you heard in that one-on-one? >> the problem for the u.s. side in particular and allies is they think iran is stalling coming back to the talks. there was a possible deal before the talks stopped in june, because iran was electing a new president and, of course, the election was pretty well set and a much harder line approach to any kind of talks with the allies over the nuclear deal. the real concern is that sirn iran is getting closer to being able to build a bomb within a few months. that's a very short breakout time. they think iran is stalling, and even if they get back into the talks slow walk it to keep making nuclear advances until it is irreversible as antony blinken said last night just hours before we sat down with the foreign minister. sitting down with him, he talked about being willing to come back to the talks but once again said the u.s. has to first lift sanctions. true, new sampgs sanctions put . not sanctions that are nuclear donald trump put on bus sanctions because of their misbehavior attacks on shipping and fighting in yemen through you know, proxy groups like the houthi's, terrorism and other issue. a lot of complicated issues and this is the first interview that this foreign minister ever did with an american journal theist and right here in new york because he's here for the u.n. meetings. >> if you are seriously pursuing negotiations, what are the meaning of piling up new sanctions? this is a negative sign, signal, to iran. >> is time running out for iran's willingness to go back to the jcpoa, the nuclear agreement? >> translator: we believe that diplomacy always works. however, if other parties to any deal do not return to the fulfillment of their commitments, then we will not remain in the deal and keep fulfilling our side of the bargain. >> and that's a very big "how much" because as i say, all of our reporting and what they're saying on the record as well, but our reporting really indicates big advances. they say it's a peaceful program. the u.s. doesn't believe it nor do the allies. >> andrea mitchell, glad to have you on. appreciate you joining us with that exclusive interview. thank you. the world of politics. very interesting political news out of one of the most closely watched races coming up. virginia. right? a non-partisan political report today shifting upcoming governor's race from leaning democrat to toss-up. that is significant not just for anyone watching the race. political nerds like me, but really significant more much more broadly people around the country. why? because the race is seen as a barometer potentially for next year's midterm elections. talking about the race in virginia. former democratic mcauliffe up against the republican. and current democratic candidate terry mcauliffe. governor, good afternoon. thanks for being with us. >> thanks. appreciate it. >> start with the news out of the cook report. you know it. virginia trending more blue over the past decade. why is the race tightening now? >> first of all, so much at stake. this is an off-off election. no federal candidates on the ballot's in a president's year, big turnout, yeah, we're a blue state. but we're purple. as you say better than anybody. so much at stake. i'm running against somebody endorses by donald trump four times, says so much of the reason i'm running is because of donald trump. he got caught on tape saying he'll go on the offense to ban abortions and defund planned parenthood. he wants day one masks to come off and roll back vaccination regulation. there's a real choice this election. democrats, folks, wake up, and understand. you've got to show up every year here in virginia. elections are so important. my opponent says the number one issue is election integrity. well, that's the code word for the 2020 somehow trump won the election. so we got to get people to come out and vote and we do we're going to win. >> so not earth shattering fair to say governor? the election kims down to turnout? they all do. even supporters think there's an enthusiasm gap. more republicans are excited about this race. people who back you are worried about that. are they right? >> i hope so, and i've been saying it for six months. got to remember. in 44 years, in virginia, the party that wins the white house, the other party wins the governor's mansion in the next year. i'm the only one to break that curse when i won in '13 and president obama won in '12. good news i ran the state for joe biden won the state by 400,000 votes. we know who the voters are. people have to get out and vote. governor matters more than anyone else. we run health care and education, but i literally am running against a trump wannabe and donald trump here on radio yesterday is trying to use this as vehicle to launch his comeback here. wants to have a win in virginia to set the tone for the 2022 elections. >> quick turn of clarity. you don't mean you hope more republican enthusiasm than democratic enthusiasm? >> when you said, you say people are worried? i said i hope they're worried. should be worried. >> i see. >> votes need to get out. >> no accident or mistake you've referenced the former president's name i think eight times so far in just three minutes we've been on the air. you've been doing that a lot as it comes to glen young kinn. youngkin. president biden. approval rating in virginia just 46%. i'm asking you this, because this is relevant here. what's your level of concern he could be a drag on your race come election day? >> listen, you know, you always face sort of federal headwinds sometimes in these types of races, but i'm appreciative of the work president biden has done. i'm covid vaccined, leading the way. very appreciative of what the president has done to puts $14 billion of american rescue funds here. let me say this. i say it to everybody i voting ob in congress. you didn't get talent is to chitty cat all day. they have got to pass these bills. we need help in the states. infrastructure. do your job and pass legislation and help lift americans up. that's my message to washington. >> also you talk and covid vaccines, and vaccination mandates. i know covid, the vaccination process, is a huge issue in this race. big topic there. you've been talking about vaccine mandates. seems to me as way to separate yourself from your opponent here. let's talk about vaccine mandates. i know what your position is for them in schools. what about for example, domestic travel? should there be vaccine mandates for that? >> i want to see everybody get a vaccine. if you have a legitimate religious or health reason, i understand. a very small percentage. i call for everybody who works in schools, attends higher ed, anyone who works in the hospital. anybody who works in a nursy home, long-care facility. i've been out front. we've got to kill this covid virus today, because various strains will come back. some could be resistant to vaccine. my opponent says, day one, masks off. day one, roll back regulations in place. the governor's put in place, and everybody working in the state government should be vaccinated. that is disqualifying to me to be governor. you are putting people's lives at rick. caught on tape telling those in college, if you don't want to take the vaccine, just don't take it. fill out exemption for whatever reason nap is disqualifying. i want to keep my schools open. i want to build a strong economy. you cannot do that if your citizens are not vvaccinated. it's the most important thing we can do and what leadership is all about. >> of course, the question comes down not necessarily whether you want to see it. it's do you mandate is? that seems to be the distinction. >> a big distinction. >> thank you. newsy day. appreciate it. note, we asked for the opponent glenn youngkin to come on the show. we hope to have him on this hour very soon. coming up, official results of that so-called quote/unquote audit in arizona expected any minute. first, the latest crazy conspiracies against covid making the rounds online. and suggestions that you should garble with some weird stuff. it's weird, man. we're going to talk about it. thinkorswim trading equips you with customizable tools, dedicated trade desk pros, and a passionate trader community sharing strategies right on the platform. because we take trading as seriously as you do. thinkorswim trading™ from td ameritrade. i've got moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. now, there's skyrizi. ♪ things are getting clearer ♪ ♪ i feel free ♪ ♪ to bare my skin, yeah, that's all me ♪ ♪ nothing and me go hand in hand ♪ ♪ nothing on my skin, that's my new plan ♪ ♪ nothing is everything ♪ achieve clearer skin with skyrizi. 3 out of 4 people achieved 90% clearer skin at 4 months. of those, nearly 9 out of 10 sustained it through 1 year. and skyrizi is 4 doses a year, after 2 starter doses. ♪ i see nothing in a different way ♪ ♪ it's my moment so i just gotta say ♪ ♪ nothing is everything ♪ skyrizi may increase your risk of infections and lower your ability to fight them. before treatment, your doctor should check you for infections and tuberculosis. tell your doctor if you have an infection or symptoms... such as fevers, sweats, chills, muscle aches, or coughs... or if you plan to or recently received a vaccine. ♪ nothing is everything ♪ talk to your dermatologist about skyrizi. learn how abbvie could help you save. - [female narrator] they line up by the thousands. talk to your dermatologist about skyrizi. each one with a story that breaks your heart. like ravette... every step, brought her pain. their only hope: mercy ships. the largest floating civilian hospital in the world. bringing free surgeries to people who have no other hope. $19 a month will help provide urgently needed surgery for so many still suffering. so don't wait, call the number on your screen. or donate at mercyships.org. it's your home. and there's no place like wayfair to make the kitchen sink, the entertainment center. however you make it, make your next project like no other. frequent heartburn? why isn't facebook shutting them down? >> it's complicated. facebook specifically banned any anti-vax group. they've banned groups saying the vaccine that's poison. don't take the vaccine. instead, anti-vaxxers don't give up. they move on to the next thing. they've reframed their group names around these alternative therapies. the ivermectin groups have tense of thousands of followers in there and even though the ivermectin isn't working in these groups and they realize they need other stuff to make it feel like they're treating themselves, the groups are still called ivermectin groups but largely hubs for anti-wax groups. you find most of the conversation on the civilian internet. >> ben collins, resident expert on the civilian internet. thanks for that reporting. commend folks to reads it on nbc.com. thank you. looking at my clock. it's 3:46 eastern time. 12:46 pacific time and in some time in the next 15 to 20 minutes we expect to get the formal, official results of that so-called air quote on it in arizona. thing that required months of review, millions of dollars spent, including financial backing, by the way, from former president trump supporting the campaign along with some allies. all of it, supposed to uncover, they thought, never before seen evidence of fraud, tampering, bamboo in the balance. some proof donald trump actually won the state. okay. so what did they actually find? what did they really find? according to a draft of the results, again, waiting for the formal, official version to come out in about 20 minutes. the draft found more votes for joe biden. 360 votes in maricopa county to be exact. today the house oversight committee is requesting testimony from the group that carried out the audit. the cyber ninjas, as more republican-led states are still following in arizona's footstep including texas. texas, a state that donald trump won. with me now, a political reporter for kpnx-tv, affiliate in phoenix, tip of the severe for all things reporting on this and mark murray with us as well. i think it's safe or fair to say that most people who backed this so-called, air quotes" audit, thought there's would be something different out of this. right? covering it closer than anyone. what do you make of the results so far? >> what we're seeing so far and what we could have some faith in, in this draft report, are the numbers. the canvassing done, the recount that was done by cyber ninjas. came in awfully close to what maricopa county showed but almost doesn't matter. no matter what cyber ninjas produce, it's fair to take it all way grain of salt. they had no idea what they were doing. thought at the start it would take them two weeks to count 2.1 million ballots. well it took them three months. those of us who watched it closely we saw it was a very ad hawk, ad-lib ballot account. no experience and somehow came in really close to what the official certified canvas showed. whether they were within 100 votes or 10,000 votes, i think you need to take it all with a grain of salt. >> mark, when you look at this more holistically, pull back, big picture, looking at the national backdrop of this. right? this is not the first time, what we're seeing in arizona, results of a review like this undercut the lies donald trump was telling about the election. got this draft result in arizona. on it, the votes, in michigan, shifted just 12 votes to donald trump, audit and recount in georgia, shifteded something like 17, 1,800 votes to donald trump, 5 million and recount in wisconsin shifting 74 votes to biden, yet you don't see the win coming out of the state. all you're seeing is more of a doubling down than ever before? >> yeah. this is a former president, hallie, who ends up doubling down, this exercise in arizona and elsewhere, all of the act to admit he didn't lose the 2020 election. if you end up having a saying he didn't lose the 2020 election in arizona or elsewhere. so if you wine up having another audit elsewhere, you push the goal posts so you don't have to admit you lost the election. we have already seen the former president releasing a statement responding to the draft reports that everyone has reported on saying it is incorrect, the media is not reporting on this correctly. hallie, i don't expect this to end at all. it will keep on going on. then it will be an issue for voters in the 2022 elections like in arizona where we are going to see competitive race force governor and for the senate. are they going to reward this stuff or penalize it. >> i can't help but notice, you were nodding and shaking your head with what he was saying there? >> don't put emphasis on the numbers or the results. this is about the pushback. cyber ninjas is saying, yes, we got same results as maricopa county did, but that's because there were the same problems with the data and the votes that maricopa county had. you are seeing folks saying, look, problems with 50,000 or 80,000 ballots. again, take those with a grain of salt because the cyber ninjas have shown us they don't know what they are doing. this is not so much about the result as keeping this alive. >> 20 seconds -- >> we are going to see more of that today. >> 20 seconds left, bram, quickly, with the news that the oversight committee is requesting testimony from cyber ninjas, what do you expect to be the first and second question to them? >> the basic question seems to be show us the money. this was a legislative function funded by dark money funders allied with donald trump. we don't know who they are. i think the oversight committee is interested in that. >> mark, ten seconds left. same question to you. >> same question? i think you are going to continue to see these efforts being discredited by democrats on capitol hill and elsewhere, but they are going to continue to go on as long as the former president continues to insist he didn't lose. >> graham resnick, mark murray, thanks to both of you. thanks for being good on your timing cues, nailed it. turning to other news, news that has been out there that we have been talking about over a week now. right now, about 600,000 missing persons are in the u.s., many of them are people of color whose cases haven't got ten same attention as those of young white women like gabby patito, whose disappearance got news nationwide who got more eyes and more witnesses from around the country. lately there has been scrutiny about the attention gap w families and advocates now talking about it. i want to bring in antonia hilton. these families are essentially asking people, care just as much about finding my loved one as they do when the case involves young white women like patito. >> that's right. i have had heart breaking conversations over the last couple of days. look, these families feel for the patito family. in some cases they have been feeling that same faelg for months and years. now they want some of the investment in patito's case to go towards theirs. >> as if search for brian laundrie intensifies, there is concern that the level of attention paid to her case isn't being paid to people of color. this man disappeared in arizona. police found his car in a ravine. three months passed and there has been no sign of him. robinson says police are making little progress and he has had to hire an independent investigator. why do you think it is, that cases like your son's go unheard? >> as much as hate to say this sometimes i think race is a factor. >> reporter: nearly 40% of the people reporting missing are people are color. they are disappearing at disproportionate rates. black americans make up 13% of the u.s. population, they account for 35% of missing persons cases? automatically, law enforcement assume that these children, they are runaways, these adults, that they are involved in some sort of criminal activity. so they are basically just, you know, swept under the rug. >> reporter: this former law enforcement officer started the black and missing foundation after seeing too many of these cases ignored. >> i can roll off chanda levy, natalie holloway, elizabeth smart, haley anthony, gabby patito, but no one can name one person of color that has received that type of mainstream media, not one person. >> reporter: reports show this bias is especially egregious for indigenous people. in the state of wyoming, where gabby disappeared, more than 700 indigenous people have gone missing in the last decade. but none have received the same focus as her case. >> it's been rather disheartening. >> i like this one. >> reporter: patsy, whose sister has been missing for over 30 years, started her own pot cast called "war cry" to push for more resources and accountability in these cases. >> there is never any communication, never any follow-up with families. and so the whole justice system just needs to be turned upside down. >> when i talked to people of color, historians, and community leaders, they say that they have been trying to share these stories for decades and these patterns go back a long way, well before gabby patito and now that everyone is recognizing this, they want to see the media and law enforcement to take action and do better. >> it is important reporting. glad to have it on the show. thank you. thank you to all of you for watching this hour of hallie jackson reports, we will see you back here on monday.
