double the number of hospitalizations. that is staggering to consider. starting today, face masks will be required on all public transportation and mass transit hubs. anyone that does not follow the order will be in violation of the order. my colleague is in ft. lauderdale for us. welcome back. how concerned are officials here about this new development? >> yeah, alex, they're so concerned about the development that it could lead to more hospitalizations and deaths that they're looking for that uk variant and the brazilian and south african variants. we know those cases have tripled in the past week. southern florida getting hit the hardest. broward county, palm beach county, and miami-dade county make up 60% of the cases total. in addition to the uk variant that officials are looking at here in florida, they're looking at the brazilian variant as well. there is a large brazilian population. they are looking at ways to increase vaccination rates as well. we spoke to some florida residents out here about their concerns and their plan to get vaccinated. >> i just got my first shot so we're looking for the next one and hopefully the variants will not make up that different. i hear they're possibly a little morecontagious than the one we got here now. we just don't know at this point and we're just going to have to adapt and this is our new normal for now. >> all right, despite this concern over that u.k. variant governor desantis has yet to kmentt. comment. the florida department of health says it is not because of the state's fully reopening policy but sequencing research on their end. the white house asked the governor to close down any indoor spaces where they cannot fully wear masks. the governor bucked that request even as the state topped 1.7 million cases. >> extraordinary, okay. thank you so much for that. with the new strain spreading and states opening their distribution to other people, we're getting more questions about what all of this means. here to help us do just that is dr. nahid bedilia. i want to get your reaction to the comments of michael osterholm. >> the surge that is likely to occur will happen in the next 6 to 14 weeks. if we see that happen which my 45 years in the trenches tells me we will, we will see something like we have not seen glet this country. at 120,000 to 130,000, we saw our health care system on the edge of not being able to provide care. imagine what we have if what has happened in england, twice as many of those cases is what we have to prepare for. >> alarming and scary, a couple words that come to mind as we listen to him. is that what we need to before prepared for in the coming months? >> it feels like we're in the eye of the storm. the reason why is that since we last spoke as you just reported three variants, there has to be more transmissble. two others, the one from south africa and brazil, are thought to not only decrease the effectiveness of some of our therapies, but potentially also affect the efficacy of vaccines. thankfully in all of those vaccine settings is they are still preventing severe disease and hospitalization. the third and the scariest thing is that they're evading natural immunity. if you have that infection with covid in the past. we don't know what that risk is yet. all of these things tell me we need to decrease transmission and increase vaccinations. so it made a lot of sense. >> those things among them is that the u.k. train will be the dominant once in this country? >> yeah, look at the numbers already. we have 29 states that already have that uk variant. and not only that, but you know it only just makes evolutionary sense that the more infections we have the more competitive advantage these strains have because they're just better to transmit. they're able to better transmit between people. the more we allow transmissions to occur -- and that to me doesn't make sense that in many states we're rolling back reopenings rather than keeping them where they are we need to consider that until we get more shots in arms we need to protect the most vulnerable otherwise they will face the prudent of the hospitalizations from the deaths. >> let's go to the viewer questions now. the first is a video question from susie. take a watch. >> hi, alex. my son lives in south carolina and had covid-19 back in may. what type of risk is someone like him at getting the new south african variant. >> what do we know about the reinfections with the variants. >> in the laboratory it looks like they seem to evade, like i said, the natural immunity seems to decrease the effectivness. and it decreases a little bit of the efficacy of the vaccines as well. so novavax, they raise alarm that their subjects that had covid-19 in the past, and that they got the variant again. there seems to be a level of community transmission, and the risk that your son has overall also depends on how widespread it is. >> okay, susie, we hope for the best for your son and that he stays healthy. what about elizabeth who says i have severe reactions with the flu vaccine and severe side effects because of a allergy to sulfates. should i or shouldn't i get the vaccine. is there other options for people hike elizabeth that have alle allergies. >> the cdc currently recommends if you have food or drug alleger ys you should be able to get the vaccine, but if you have reactions to other vaccines you may want to get it under closer observation. overall they are very safe, but we know that it is not just there the trials, but the in 24 million people. the rate is 5.5 people per 1 million. so these remain very safe. if you have severe allergies, reach out and see if you can get it under closer observation. >> let's get to robby who wants to know are there any medications you should not take before or after getting the vaccine and how long before or have should you not take them. effect is specifically mention ing immune system medications and antacids. >> not medications, but two exceptions in terms of timing. if you have gotten plasma, they recommend you wait 90 days before getting the vaccine. these immune medications are meant to suppress, right, and your vaccines are trying to increase that memory they they may not work together. but if you had the infection before but not the medications you can just recover, finish your isolation, and there is no delay in terms of medication. the other thing is that for other vaccinations, if you're getting shingles vaccinations, they say put in a gab. >> good point. here is another video question from patrick, take a listen. >> here is my question. i have two family members who prevently contracted. they're both now fully recovered and wanted to know whether or not they can take, or is it advisable for them to get the covid-19 vaccine. >> we have seen other concerns about this, what do you advice on that. >> i'm so glad to hear your family members recovered because that can be scary i know. we know that gullain-barre, a sudden neurological disease, has been noted in other vaccinations. and the cdc does not consider prior gullain-barre a come police station to not get the vaccine. but they should just check with their provider. >> for someone had the virus, is there a waiting period to getting the vaccine or can they recover and go? >> with the exception of people that might have gotten the plasma or the antibodies which is when you wait the 90 days, as long has you have recovered and finished your isolation period, currently it is about ten days for most people, it might be 21 if you're immunocompromised. we assume that because there is a level of immunity right after the invex, given how low the vaccine supplies are currently, you could delay it, but there is no complication to receiving it. >> thank you for saying so. breaking news, everybody. millions of people are brace for a powerful winter storm set to dump a foot of snow or more. let's get a live look at milwaukee that already got about ten inches of snow, but it's not just snow. it's frigid temperatures, too. folks in boston bundling up this weekend. janessa webb is here with the bad news. >> i say it with bad news, but i love your smile. >> the next 36 hours they're really going to get dicey. monday and tuesday it will exit the midwest. i think by wednesday and thursday most of us l be digging out. this is a very powerful system impacting 102 million people. that is one in every third american for the next three days. you can start to see this storm system is shifting to the east. it is on the light side right now making it's way into interior new york into dc. there is a new forecast showing more moisture that will make it's way into dc so things have a possibility of getting sloppy in that area. but i think the middle ground it philadelphia so new york city where it will be predominantly snow starting later tonight and that nor'easter starts to develop until tomorrow morning. and then we go through an extended period of time. the brunt of the system. the coastal low makes it's way up the coast, and there is even a coastal flood issue that is going to be part of coastal areas in philadelphia to new york city. and where we could see kind of the rain and snow and that will make things even more dicey in the area. but accumulation totals have changed. now the national weather service forecast saying 17 inches for new york city. so -- >> wait a minute that went up. >> it did go up to 17. 17 inches. this could be a historic storm system and that is just in the city. the pockets of isolated areas are near 20 inches now. if you can get off of the roadway starting want to stay in for the next 24 hours. what i have not talked about and i want to make an emphasis on this is the winds. tomorrow evening they will be picking up to 50 or 60 miles per hour. alex, widespread power outages along with that snow. we really need to watch that. >> thank you so much. with some inside the fbi are calling the capitol riot robe their biggest case since september 11. t case since september 11 it's moving day. and while her friends are doing the heavy lifting, jess is busy moving her xfinity internet and tv services. it only takes about a minute. wait, a minute? but what have you been doing for the last two hours? delegating? oh, good one. move your xfinity services without breaking a sweat. now that's simple, easy, awesome. xfinity makes moving easy. go online to transfer your services in about a minute. get started today. now looking at today's political headlines. three lawyers on trump's legal team abruptly left overnight. it is unclear who will represent the former president a week before his trial begins. in the meantime, president biden is gearing up to tackle covid this week. a group of ten republican senators are now pushing back urging the president to consider an alternate plan. >> when we talk about unity and bipartisanship, when the republicans had control they pushed through a nearly $2 trillion program that consistented of tax breaks for the wealthiest people in the country. they didn't reach out. they came within one vote of repealing the affordable care act and throwing over 30 million americans off of the health care they have. everybody believes in bipartisanship. but the most important issue of the moment is that we deal with the unprecedented set of crisis facing the american people. that is what we have to do. >> also the biggest case since september 11th, that is how fbi agents are describing the investigation into the january 6th riots. new reporting shows a look at the fbi probe showing the attack was coordinated in great detail and new revelations from a mother that lost her son in the parkland school shooting around the controversy around congresswoman marjorie taylor greene. >> my first question to congresswoman green is do you really believe that parkland and sandy hook were staged? that was really important to me. to this moment i cannot fathom that someone could say something like that. her answer to me was unequivocally no, i do not. so did i believe congresswoman greene when she said they were not false flags and staged events. i very much wanted to and i wanted to be able to believe her. so i asked her if she would come on air with me today to make a public statement. i said you know what, if that is really what you believe then come on air and tell the public just that. her statement is clear because here i am with you, and she is not here right now. >> let's move on now from the headlines and go a little more in-depth. monica alba has more from the white house. monica, we'll start with you. you're reporting on trump losing his entire legal team with a week before his impeachment trial, where does that leave his defense? >> extremely unclear and on this snowy sunday we're not talking about the current occupant of the white house behind me, but this significant development with donald trump who doesn't appear to have any kind of legal team or strategy in place just 48 hours before his defense team that will deliver are pre-trial brief. so we're now learning that 3 lawyers that originally signed up with the intent with the help of defending the former president have now headed for the exits. it's unclear what motivated in. these are people who we were told by senator lindsey gram, a former republican ally, were recommended to donald trump for the particular reason that they have a lot of expertise in federal indications and they would be able to argue on the merits of the constitutional nature of this case. but clearly they parted ways now and we're digging in for more information. it mean that's with just days to go until his second impeachment trial, he doesn't have anyone out there to defend him. >> it is an extraordinary thing certainly. let's go to capitol hill where new evidence is coming to light. what are we learning about this? hey, alex, the washington post reporting that the fbi now having almost a month since that insurrection happened. really digging in and finding coordinated attempts to storm the capitol. many of them coming beyond with maps of the capitol and people forming groups, meeting in dc and leading them to the capitol. very stark quotes and words that we're now learning from people that the fbi has been able to question. many of them coming with the intent to kill. and many members here still wondering why. knowing some of these conversations started online just days after the november election, why they didn't do anything to stop these people from storming the capitol. one of them is congresswoman rosa delario. she is part of the appropriations committee. take a listen to what she had to say about what she uncovered and what they're going to continue to investigate in the coming weeks and months. >> first we found out that the intelligence was there and we found further that the agencies that were there to do something about this ignored the information and now what we're trying to do is to look toward who is responsible, who was accountable, who made the decisions not to deploy the national guard in realtime to protect the capitol. >> so it's whether or not -- worth pointing out that many congressmen a faced the toll of knowing this, nancy pelosi set up counsellors so they can help process everything that happened a month ago. >> incredible that needs to be set up to support them. joining me now a democratic from california that serving on the ohm mand security and the energy and commerce community. good to see you again. i want to ask you about this "the washington post" the fbi is finding evidence that the attack on january 6th was coordinated. the reporting says it included potential violence with people says be ready to fight and be ready for war and they were discussing the floor plans of congress. what is your reaction to that? >> it is very disturbing. thank you for having me back. i will point out that this week the homeland security meeting is having a hearing specifically on this issue. it's having a look at domestic terrorism. . we had a hearing earlier this year. this riots. part of the mission of homeland and law enforcement is to be able to identify the problems, identify these coordinated efforts, and to break them up and then to make sure they're talking to the other agencies to stop this from happening. that will be part of the focus. it will be disturbing to hear about some of the chats that were happening to go assassinate and go do violence against elected officials. so the fbi will continue to look over that. i had a chance to talk to the fbi next week. we'll see what we learn next week at our hearing. >> let's take a listen to some alarming audio from a chat room leading up to it. >> i wish they'd storm the congress and the senate and pull all of those treasonous guys out there. >> patriots are in the building, it's beautiful. >> does he not realize president trump called us to siege the place. >> honestly i think the patriots should have been allowed to go in there, grab those s.o.b.s and pull them out of the building, and you know, have an execution right there. >> we have to trust that there is going to be military tribunals and we'll get to watch all kinds of excuses. >> they're guilty. treason. behead them all. >> if the biden inauguration wants to take your weapons and force vaccinate you have the due process to blow them away. do it. >> listening to it leaves me speechless. as we do that show there that there was not better preparation. you're on the homeland security committee. i'm so glad you're having a meeting to delve into all of these details. why do you think there was such a massive security failure. >> well we're learning and seeing more evidence of those at the higher levels not allowing there to be weapons and interference and there is a lot of questions that need to be asked about why that happened. and you know let's remember, as well, that the fbi called qanon a terror threat. and now we have members of congress promoting theories. and their words matter. as we heard in the clip there, some people say they were called on by the president himself to go do this. we cannot have those on the inside. we cannot have elected leaders that are supposed to be calling this out. those promoting these experience terrorists. there is no explanation at this point about why there was not better preparation and why there wasn't better coordination, or why when the fgi heard about this before the 6th did not take immediate action to talk to our law enforcement to make make sure they had a green light to make sure they could stop what occurred on the 6th. i think there is still a lot of questions that need to be answered. >> with regard to what happened a few days ago when they issued a national thunderstorm advisory. that it could mobilize to incite or commit violence this is about americans unleashing violence on americans. how ware is it to see something like this and why are we seeing it now? is there specific threated? >> we have seen the rise, the hate, and the violence. we learned that in the last areaing that we had and we have seep a rise in the ugliness under the former administration that reported experiences, who supported these groups, who called them fine people. that's the start. we can't have elected officials doing that. people reich that don't belong in the presidency or congress. it's remarkable to me that they will send people to congress like that. but there has to be con squepss. there has to be a punishment, and that's one thing that the house of representatives has the ability to do is punish it's members. if we're not acting at our level and saying this is wrong, then we're going to continue to see the problem. we're going to continue to see the violence. you have those at the highest level of government saying it's okay, we support you. and to to me sounds general which is why i think there has to be a criminal angle and investigation on the role of those on the inside. i'm talking about actual members of congress as connections to these domestic terror groups that the fbi is calling domestic terror groups. >> sobers concept. senator jill manchin has blasted harris's appearance on a west virginia tv station, take a listen. >> i saw it. i could not believe it. we're going to try to find a bipartisan pathway forward. we need to but we need to work together. that is not a way of working together. what do you make of that? the biden administration wants unity. is that the way to do it? >> they're making a case on why americans should get relief that they need. we will find a way to come together and get the relief that the american people need. i field confident that the administration and many of us will be going into our districts to make the case across the country. i am hopeful that the senators and the administration will work it out and get the relief that people need. >> okay, good to see you. come see me again, thank you. uniting america, a noble aim at president biden, of course, but how is it possible amid an impeachment trial?
