SAN ANGELO — Beginning in August 2022, the state board of education voted to allow seventh- and eighth-grade students in Texas to learn about forms of birth control beyond abstinence, but middle schoolers still won't have to learn about the importance of consent or the definitions of gender identity and sexual orientation. The candidates running for trustee positions on the San Angelo ISD school board shared their opinion concerning these issues with the Standard-Times. Three district races on the school board will be decided during the election May 1, 2021. Candidates were sent eight questions and asked to keep their responses limited to 3-4 sentences. Some responses have been edited for clarity and length.
