has burned 20,000 acres one of the larger fires burning right now in the north bay. just to the south there is a fire burning near sears point in napa county crews are battling the atlas fire and the silverado country club has been evacuated. >> these are live pictures from santa rosa. one resident described the experience as a firestorm. he said his neighborhood was gone. skyfox shows that homes are burning right now over this neighborhood. you can see what appears to be destruction down below in this particular part of santa rosa. >> alex savidge has been reporting for us and a number people have said they left with nothing but the clothing on their back.>> reporter: yes and people are still evacuating or preparing to evacuate. this fire is sweeping across the city. we are now on freedom lane right off of san miguel avenue. this is the scene behind us on the left-hand side you can see several homes from here to the end of the block destroyed by the fire. as we swing around to the other direction i can tell you there is another large fire to the right. we have this scene playing out across the city of santa rosa. this gentleman up on the roof has the garden hose out. we have seen this time and time again. he is hoping to get enough water on the roof so if he gets one of the embers that drops down firefighters might have a chance to save his home. you can see that they had no hope to save these homes. again this is near san miguel avenue. we just pulled up to the scene after looking at this devastation a few blocks away at a community, a senior citizen community called the orchards community. dozens of homes were destroyed in the area. this fire at last check was 20,000 acres but the main body of the fire is one part of the equation but the other part is that you have the embers being picked up by the strong winds that are whipping around the city. these embers are falling onto random neighborhoods like this one destroying homes. >> alex, you are one mile west of 101. that is right and we talked about that. the distance that we are from the main body of the fire and that is why we know these are spot fires. we have fires from the embers dropping down on the neighborhoods. we are a good distance from the main edge of the fire but because of the wind these fires are popping the. the wind is relatively calm right now but within the next minute we could of the wind pick up and we could have swirling wind which we have seen quite a bit this morning. you could have the swirling wind pick up and that will start new fires and firefighters are just scrambling really moving from one neighborhood to the next to stay ahead of these spot fires.>> i recall that interview you were doing with a gentleman who was almost speechless but he did say his first spotting of the fire was just after 2:00 and here we are over six hours later going from six in the howard -- morning until now. >> everyone has been stoned by how quickly the fire came upon them. how much time they actually had before their homes were in flames. talking this morning with a gentleman who was a firefighter who work in daly city as a firefighter. he told me he has not seen anything like this at his doorstep. he was amazed by what we had seen play out in the city of santa rosa. you can drive around the neighborhoods and you will see seems like this across the city. it is heartbreaking but a lot of people have lost their homes and it is far too soon to get any kind of count. >> have you had the chance to talk to any of the firefighters walking around just to get their reaction to this fire? >> reporter: what is that? okay. have a firefighter at the scene. they have been so busy they have not had a lot of time but aside from the cal fire representative for the most part these firefighters are running from one scene to the next and there is not a lot of time to try to gauge how many homes may have been lost. they are just trying to do what they can to get the fires under control. and they have to move on. >> are people trying to get back to the neighborhood to see what is left? >> i don't know if you can see us but you can see this other person across the block on fire and you have another gentleman with the next home over and he is on his roof with the hose desperate to save his place. he is hoping that the wind does not pick up some of the embers and drop them on his place. by the way, something else that is going on at the scene. i don't know if you can hear this but this is the first sound we noticed when we arrived. that is a gas line so you have the gas fed fire burning there. there is fire shooting out of that so obviously we will keep away from that. >> so, the person we saw on his roof, is that someone who stayed in the neighborhood or came back to defend his home?>> reporter: i apologize because this year peace is giving me problems. i have you for the moment. >> did people stay to defend their homes? it looks like we will have to let him go. we are trying to bring these live reports. honestly the pictures tell the entire story we have a man on the roof with the garden hose trying to save his home.>> you can understand trying to stay back and protect what you have so if that is all you have been you have to do it. traffic around the bay area has been one of those days where a lot of people are taking different routes because of the closures. >> that is right we have highway 37 we will start there. westbound from vallejo to novato to have reopened eastbound but further up near the fires there is a major closure of highway 11 between mark west springs down to highway 12. we do have a lot of fire in the area. marine transit and sonoma transit have been disrupted because of the fire. not a lot of traffic from novato to san rafael . there has been a big accident at the bay bridge with a glass truck and other vehicles involved. it is here after the bay bridge. if we go to the bay bridge picture almost no one is getting by. the crashes near the 880 and there is a backup but nobody is getting by because of the major accident. let's get back to the desk. >> we are working to get you the newest information. we have reports from you and steve can help us out. a lot of people are chiming in to say what has burned and what is safe. >> the historic round barn in santa rosa has burned. >> yes, have reports that it was damaged for sure. >> i am looking for information on highway 12 if anybody knows what is going on there please let me know. a couple of people have asked but we don't want to get caught in between. we do have one problem. so many people are leaving non- evacuation zones and that is not helping those who have to leave the area. so if you don't have to leave then don't. one viewer says there is ash on my car and we have many reports of that. this is just unbelievable. we have winds coming from all directions. things could eventually turn a little bit north of cloverdale to the northwest and napa has turned a little bit. american canyon going from north to west southwest. port chicago is northeast. check out the humidity in the teens. some areas had winds gusting up to 35 but the humidity is very low and these are easterly or northerly directions which is not good. concord has east wind but most locations are reporting the northerly breeze. i think we have lost a lot of these observation areas as they are not reporting. 60s and 50s for most. the red flag warning going until tomorrow morning at 5:00. the wind will be tailing off with higher elevations getting in on this. by 11:00 some of these should be decreasing at the surface as the system went into the intermountain region. there is snow in denver moving out of the picture and eventually that will allow the wind to turn westerly. even at half moon bay we have the east wind. eventually things will turn southwest but here we go gusting up to 30 in several areas. palo alto has a north wind and so does mountainview. down in san jose you're getting smoke from the north and there are multiple fires so it is smoky and hazy everywhere. there is no fog this is all haze. the good news is we have a system diving down rapidly into tuesday and wednesday starting a cooling trend with higher humidity. 70s and 80s on the temperatures with the extended outlook calling for temperatures to drop pretty rapidly into wednesday thursday and toward the end of the week. >> i just got a text message from a friend of mine by the university of san francisco that says ash is falling. >> if we can get information from anywhere that is great we have reports of a fire near glen ellen and near oakmont. so let us know. >> a short time ago the mayor of santa rosa issued a statement. it reads as we wake to the smoke and ash and take in the magnitude of damage, i hope we can each take a moment to reach out to friends and neighbors. in these difficult times we need our community to hold us up. this morning thousands of santa rosa and are displaced in shelters or with friends and family. evacuation orders for the following neighborhoods due to approaching fires. residents need to listen to the evacuation orders. leave immediately. >> there are thoughts turn to those forced from their homes for now getting help and comfort from the red cross. we will bring in cynthia shaw to talk about the shelters that are open and how many people the red cross is helping.>> so the red cross is supporting approximately 7 shelters across four counties in sonoma and napa lake and mendocino counties. there are other locations that have been opened up by local communities particularly in sonoma to give a safe place to those affected by these fires. >> do you have an actual number? in some cases we heard that one shelter filled up already. how many people have checked into the shelters?>> in sonoma county the red cross shelters in sonoma county, both of them are full. the capacity is upwards of 300 to 400 people at the shelters. >> what sort of help are they getting?>> we are providing a safe place for people who have left their homes in the middle of the night. we have volunteers there providing comfort and food kind of giving them a place for more information about what is going on and while they are waiting, the unknown is the hardest part.>> how are they getting information? are they relying on neighbors or is there a fire official? maybe they are watching the tv? >> a little bit of everything. the fire officials are giving us updates and of course social media and news media as well. we also have nurses and mental health professionals providing additional services to the client's and residents. >> do you have a lot of people sitting at home who want to help saying maybe i can volunteer and bring up blankets or something. what would you like people to do to help? >> firstly, we have the trained red cross volunteers coming from across the bay area making their way into the area. if people are interested in helping we have a sign-up sheet and it is on our facebook. people can sign up there and we will contact them with opportunities to help in shelters or when the fires are contained going back to help people in the neighborhood's. >> okay. >> currently we are not accepting goods at the shelter because we want to make sure we have enough space for everybody who needs that space. we are focusing on caring for everybody.>> are you guys overwhelmed right now? or things are going smoothly when it comes to getting the shelters up and running? >> the red cross plans for these disasters but disasters are always sudden and they are surprising. we trained for this but no training completely prepares you for the real thing. i would not say they are overwhelmed but this is a large response and we are working with partners and government to address the needs and bring in additional resources from across the region and the state to support the local community. >> we saw the relief effort for some after the earthquake in vallejo and napa. how long do you expect the relief effort to continue after this much devastation? >> the red cross is part of the community. a number of our volunteers have evacuated their homes that may have been destroyed. so we were in the community before and we will be in the community after and we are working with families as long as they need support to help them find recovery options. >> does the red cross ever run out of money?>> i don't know, actually. you know, we are very lucky that the public is generous and we are able to respond because of the generosity of people and companies from the bay area and across the country. because of this we have supplies purchased already moving into areas and vehicles that are trained volunteers so, that generosity allows us to continue to respond. as long as the community is supporting red cross efforts we will continue to provide the services. >> so, you said there were current volunteers who have lost their homes? >> they may have. they are not sure of the status of their homes. >> yet, they continue to volunteer and provide for the community. >> correct. >> that says a lot about what they do. cynthia shaw, we appreciate your time and your updates. if we need you again we will give you a call. please call us with any new information. ion. >> an evacuation center is full at the crosswalk community church. there are 350 people already at the shelter which opened it up at 11:00 last night. some say they were forced to evacuate to the church. >> my daughter called at 1:30 and said to be ready to evacuate. and then at about 3:00 the sheriff came around and told us to evacuate. >> many evacuees are nervous about what they will find when they come back to the neighborhood's. >> i want to bring up some bullet points in regards to a news conference with some new information. the atlas fire in napa county has burned between 8000 and 12,000 acres. the tubbs fire between calistoga and santa rosa as we have seen is at 35 is at 35,000 acres. napa has evacuated 100 people and homes that it could be more. >> i am in contact with someone who has loved ones in the fire area. she is telling me cell phone service is limited if not completely down. in some cases texting is working but phone calls are not. so that could help you. she also said power lines are down in some neighborhoods. this is in the hills of napa from soda canyon road and she said that is making it difficult for people to drive out of their neighborhoods. if you can't get a hold of someone in the north bay it is hard not to panic, but the information we have is cell phone service is spotty. texting might be working better. i have reports of people who decided to stay and defend their homes. also we are getting word that some power lines are down which makes getting in and out difficult. >> we have been talking about the air attack and when it is coming. there is one coming but we don't know how big it is. there are planes and choppers coming soon in napa county. the atlas fire has 50 confirmed structures that are burned . there is currently no containment as of right now on any of these fires. >> we are staying on top of the situation. these pictures are some of what we took from the overnight. people being forced to evacuate being told to leave from fire officials or from their neighbors getting a knock on the door. so many of us who don't live anywhere near the fires woke up to howling wind overnight. it was a very uneasy night and i did not check the ktvu.com website, i should have but a lot of people in my neighborhood were saying is that on fire? but it was actually 50 miles from where i live but ash could be seen falling all over. this is an entire bay area experience. >> i remember there was a fire by the napa county airport in the american canyon. my first instinct was to take a picture because i knew the wind was pushing down to the south and to the west. i thought that was it but then it got stronger that is when i decided to get up and take a peek outside of the home. you can see in these live pictures from skyfox overhead, we are not sure where this is this appears to be napa county near atlas peak. this is a firestorm what we are experiencing in santa rosa. >> it has been daylight for two hours so these pictures we are bringing you are getting better and better in terms of informing us of the area that has burned. in relation to the major highways but it is interesting when we bring live pictures from the ground. it looks like it is evening or night time where alex savidge is located because there is so much smoke and haze in the air. even in the bay area 60 miles away we have very hazy skies in the east bay. we could smell it all the way in oakland. here we have bright orange flames being shown from skyfox. i will share with you what i texted my mom. so often you think about yourself and the people you love especially those who may be elderly. i told my mom to stay inside don't go for your morning walk because this is about some of the most unhealthy air we have seen across the bay area and a longtime. >> we want to bring in tom vacar. i heard you are in santa rosa? >> yes we are. we want to show you something over here. you can see the fires over here but you can hear this it sounds like a drum but it is gas venting out of broken pipes and pg&e has not been able to turn those off yet. i want to pound off to the right and i want to show you something. to the right you can see the cars evacuating and across the street not even 50 feet away are these homes that are perfectly intact. nothing is going on and then other people in this case are being told to leave and they are leaving. i want you to look at the sky now. you can see the smoke is so thick in the sky that the sun is bright orange as opposed to its usual yellow and white. that is how much smoke there is. all that you can smell is smoke and it is fairly windy right now. it is windy enough to keep the flames going and that is what is happening. to a certain extent some of these people are getting out and others are trying to get to their homes to see if they are around but this is bizarre. you have this one square block destroyed entirely and every house around it is intact and people are out with their garden hoses making sure the fire doesn't get any farther than it has. alex savidge has gone a little south of where i am and he will be looking at another neighborhood but these are spotty destructions. it is not like a firestorm that sweeps through the entire region. it is block by block and that is the situation currently. we have a lot of smoke with the flames and you can hear the gas vans going off sounding like drums but this area is certainly going to be kept away from because of the potential danger. looking to the left all of these homes are intact and to the right they are all gone. tom vacar from santa rosa. >> i know that you covered the san bruno explosion. i am looking at the gas burning now, have there been improvements made to the shutoff system? >> the gas is on because they haven't got in to the feeder valve. this is not high-pressure gas so it is not a giant mainline or anything. there have been so many places where pg&e has to go and i have seen their trucks all over but they are trying to get to them. you can't do much more construction than here. so it is better to have it this way. better to come this way than into homes and things like that. so they are doing what they can to save the property that they can. one other thing. you can see this house and the house has been damaged, but he is up there with a hose trying to save what you can. he probably lost the garage or something like that. this is what we are seeing with respect to what is going on in this neighborhood. so this is what we have been looking at. >> the side this one gentleman with the hose on his roof, are there others in the neighborhood where the homes are still standing? are they hanging out or watching this? >> reporter: if we look to the right you will see you have people across the street with their masks on. these are homes that these folks live in and this is going on up and down the street. if you go to the left you will see a bunch of other people who are clearly just watching to see what is going on. i heard some sort of a horn i'm not sure what that is. as you can see there is a lot of traffic being routed through the area. clearly they are not concerned that these cars could be caught up in something but it is a bizarre scene to say the least with all of this going on. >> are there firefighters in the area? >> there are firefighters in this area but they are moving onto the places where there are open flames. as we came up here we saw a group of people putting flames out in their home which was destroyed but behind them there was a large fire going on. so there is a lot of fuel and something else that i noticed which is really interesting, there were 15 or 20 ambulances headed south toward south marin county. and i think that was the people being evacuated from the hospitals that needed to have serious care. there must have been 15 or 20 ambulances and there are plenty around here because they have to get these people out of the hospital's. so this is a pretty big crisis and of course it is not just here. one of the first fires are covered in the 80s was the atlas peak fire and that is burning again. >> you're pretty close to the airport so have you seen a helicopter or any sort of water drops? >> i have not seen that but it is not likely they would be doing water drops in this neighborhood only because they know what the situation is. and the other problem is straight up, you can see there is a lot of smoke and you can't drop on things you can't see. so the spotter planes would not be able to see anything. they are very careful about that because the last thing you want is an airplane coming into a neighborhood that can't get out so the officials are calling this off limit for the tankers. again, this one seems to be as crazy as it sounds, somewhat under control because they know the perimeters and they know it is not likely to go any further but there are firefighters around here checking to make sure other places are okay. >> dramatic pictures from santa rosa, thank you tom. we will check back in, in a little bit. >> traffic is being impacted and we are starting with santa rosa because highway 101 is closed just north of the mark west area between santa rosa and winsor. i would not advise you to be on the road at all even when the road is opened there are lot of people moving throughout the county with a lot of emergency vehicles. we have closures all over sonoma and napa county. one thing that i have heard from people in the area is that the roads that are not closed a very crowded as people are moving around. highway 37 is closed in the westbound direction but it is not closed eastbound. i do want to let you know traffic in marin county headed south has lightened up a little bit. you can see the smoke along the richmond bridge with people headed to san rafael because they can't get to highway 37. i want to mention they cleared a major accident at the bay bridge toll plaza which blocked all of the lanes. the traffic has lightened up here now though and it is backed up for about five minutes. most of the slow traffic has been in the area of the fire region of the bay. also, smart train service is not running today but, they will reevaluate this afternoon. back to you guys. >> we are working to get you the newest information. we have seen the wind died down and then whip up. >> the wind is not as bad as it was but oakmont was evacuated that retirement community. we still need some facts on glen ellen if you have any. tom vacar just told us that little dot is the sun. if you are looking northward you can see the smoke and a little westerly wind at lakeport but after that it is mostly east or northeast but it is still due north in cloverdale and in napa it has been northeast to even the west southwest but it is still staying north or at least east. we need the higher humidity to calm things down. santa rosa north at 10 miles per hour. fairfield north gusting up to 30 miles per hour and the same thing in vacaville and davis. the northwind is keeping temperatures mild. we have a red flag warning until tomorrow morning at 5:00. the wind advisory will be ending at 11:00. i think the higher elevations will be doing with 30 to 40 mile per hour winds but the lower elevations should have a decrease afternoon. fog is coming up the coast but it will not help today. it will be hazy and smoky with the easterly breeze. i can't tell you the last time i saw that but to where the valley that is where the gusting is really cranked up from the due north. north palo alto, north mountainview even santa clara and santa cruz are getting the smoke because of the wind coming from the north. a bit of a change tomorrow with 70s and 80s. cooler weather appears to be coming tuesday or wednesday as temperatures drop the humidity will come up. we don't want the wind but we will take a change of direction's. >> let's check in with leigh martinez. what is the latest information with cal fire? >> we had local officials and the assemblywoman. the governor has declared a state of emergency for napa county and sonoma county as well as yuba county because of the fire's. in napa county there are three major fires going that is the atlas peak between 8000 and 12,000 acres. the largest at 35,000 acres which is in sonoma county. at this time they do not have any containment on these fires. these are all separate fires, atlas peak started first but they believe that had burned on its own and something ignited the other fires. >> did today confirm any number of injuries or the human toll? >> no, they believe there will be some injuries but currently they do not have any number of evacuees and they don't have any reports of injuries that they could tell us. the fires are currently under investigation but at this time there is no confirmation on fatalities or injuries but paul -- there were some areas that they could not get to around atlas peak. they did have a couple of helicopter rescues and it is hard with the visibility because it is so hazy. they said there were some heroic deeds completed to rescue people. >> so those were done on atlas peak? >> that is correct and there were some areas they could not reach. >> we are getting people reaching out to us wanting to know in regards to the silverado country club area, was that burned through? >> yes, silverado country club has burned through multiple structures. again, they do not have any confirmed number of structures just multiple. >> did they say anything in regards to the air attack? we are assuming because of the conditions it is not safe for pilots to fly and drop the water and retardant so do they have an idea or are they waiting to see how the smoke blows? >> they will be starting the it air attacks but since we have multiple fires in the area it will be prioritized as to where they will go. also, the visibility will dictate where they can go. >> did they say anything about cardinal newman high school? we have heard it has been damaged and destroyed did you get any information? >> i did not on that high school but they did mention all of the schools in napa county have been closed because of the fires. in terms of actual damage they did not give specifics. >> really quickly did they mention when we might hear from them? >> unfortunately, no. at this point they could not give us any idea for another update but we do have direct communication with them so they will reach out if they can bring in the media. >> multiple strike teams across the state have come to assist on the fires right? >> yes, the fire chief believes by the end of the day resources will be in from all over the state. >> leigh martinez joining us on the phone, thank you. >> the fires have caused incredible destruction in napa and simona county. >> the images have shown how many homes have burned. dozens at least, pam cook with more. >> we are checking with the surrounding areas and the sheriffs department. i just spoke to the lieutenant from marin county sheriff's office. they have sent a number of mutual aid specifically to the santa rosa area but currently they are watching out for the lake highway and the sears point area near the sonoma raceway. currently, he tells me the wind is not moving west toward black point but here is some of the video. the wind is shifting as we have been talking about so they are keeping a very close eye on this. we had a statement from the sonoma raceway. we had a representative sent us photographs from the scene and the raceway issued a statement that reads all of us at sonoma raceway extend our thoughts and prayers to those who have been touched by the devastating fires. the facility team and local companies have been battling grass fires on cougar mountain and elsewhere. it does not appear the raceway structures have been damaged or are in immediate danger but again, marin county sending mutual aid to the santa rosa area including officers who are not in emergency roles including school patrol officers, sheriff's deputies who typically patrol neighborhoods all of them have been pulled into basically active duty. they are in uniform and headed to the santa rosa area. they have activated the partial activation of emergency operations but he tells me they are very short staffed because many of the marin county sheriff's deputies and police officers as well as emergency personnel live in the sonoma and napa county area so that is going to come bound the problem. he says the traffic south has been lightening up but traffic has been very bad and he reiterates to stay off the roads if you can because they are evacuating people and getting emergency personnel into sonoma and napa county. they did assist in escorting and relocating the sonoma county juvenile hall. they have moved those kids into solano county. he also said there are a number of ambulances which is another reason to stay off the roads. running through sonoma county into marin county and throop alejo you are probably hearing this and this has to do with kaiser hospital. the hospitals that were evacuated which we were looking at this morning, the kaiser hospital in santa rosa had to evacuate and a number of the patients has been moved to kaiser san rafael possibly marin county general possibly into san francisco. the other notice is that the smart train service is currently closed. columbus day took a lot of cars off the road and operations at the marin county civic center where the sheriffs office is located is under light operation with no jury duty because of the columbus day holiday. so they did send that notification out. again, we want to reiterate we have a number of emergency personnel who need to get in the area with a number of people getting evacuated. if you can stay off the roads through marin county and alejo. that is the big message. >> okay, pam cook thank you so much. this is a quick comparison. we're talking about large fires up to 35,000 acres. according to the briefing from leigh martinez officials have said the fires burned 68 square miles and that is the size of the city of livermore. think about 580 near the outlets. livermore starts there and go to the altamont pass. 68 square miles. >> the first fire started at 10:00 last night. this is not even 12 hours later. >> again, we have been talking about large fires and we will focus on the other big fire in napa county. the atlas fire burning south of lake beryessa allie rasmus joins us live from that area where people say they did not know what was going on until they were told to get out. >> reporter: i am at the crossroads where we have driven into this neighborhood one mile from the intersection and behind me is the olive hills ranch. we could see the fire creeping down the hillside and we saw people go out with buckets to douse the flames on the fence posts that had caught fire. cal fire was here earlier and a crew from fremont recently left because it looks like this part of the fire is under control because the home on the property is unscathed. the fire did not creep onto the property where the house is located but other homes less than one mile away were less fortunate. we drove down to mount george avenue and saw at least three homes burned with just the chimneys standing. it looked like there were burnt out cars as well with people on some of the properties with nearby homes who were packing up and getting out. we had cal fire crews on standby working the fire as well and parts of the hills around mount george avenue looked like there was the fire creeping up the hills and there were homes that appeared to be threatened but we saw at least three homes that were completely destroyed. we spoke with a neighbor down the street and his home and his neighbor's home completely unscathed. he could not believe how random the damage was.>> it is so random. this street mount george goes to the foot of the hills and there is a stretch of houses that are gone but some houses are fine. we are kind of like really nervous. we are just waiting. i will be on the ember watch. >> reporter: you can see how this fire was caused by embers. driving to the neighborhoods we will pass several homes that look fine and then we will see a random spot that is completely engulfed in flames. the fire is jumping around. the conditions are pretty windy currently and this area of mount george into the valley so the wind was whipping down the hill and you can see in the pictures the smoke going all over the place. so the wind is a factor. this gentleman says he and his wife planned to stay in the home even though they were under mandatory evacuation. he said he will be on ember watch keeping an eye on his property. he spoke with firefighters who warned him that if the pine trees catch fire to get out. people are touch and go taking this minute by minute trek to evaluate if they will stay or go. >> allie rasmus, thank you. we have heard officials tell us if you feel it is time to go then go. it is interesting to be told not to wait for that order. >> get out and keep the roadways open. let's check in with sal castaneda for an update on the closures going on. >> we have a lot of closures. one of the bigger ones is highway 101 in santa rosa between santa rosa and winsor between steele lane and mark west springs. the rest of the area is slow as we have reports of side roads being jammed up. all of the cities have a lot of jams traffic as people are trying to get through as we push in you can see the roads have been closed and others remain opened. they keep making closures as the fires develop so highway 12 will be opened and you might arrive and it could be closed because the closures are happening moment by moment. highway 37 is closed westbound and the rest of the bay area traffic is lightening up as you drive through the bay bridge for example thinks have lightened up. most of the slow traffic is in the north bay corridor. back to the desk. >> there was a news conference at the top of the hour now let's listen in to what was said from the officials. >> good morning, i am congressman mike thompson, thank you for being here. this is the first briefing from the napa sheriffs office on the tragic situation that we are in regarding the fire. there will be periodic updates throughout the day. i would like to introduce the chair of the board of supervisors. supervisor ramos. >> good morning, currently we have three fires burning in napa county. atlas peak and tubbs fire. the primary focus is on life safety. at this time we do not know the number of evacuees that we have. we are continuing to focus on the evacuations. the causes of the fires are under investigation. we do not have confirmed injuries or fatalities currently but we will update that when we have confirmation. we will city of napa. we have been working with the county that has the main eoc for the event. the city of napa has been concerned about the brown valley area in the west of town. also to the east of town. wear out with bulldozers doing what we can to put in the fire lines so the fires are deterred from coming into the city. we have evacuated montecito and monte vista. we have a councilmember on monte vista that was evacuated along with the former mayor. we estimate in the city of napa 100 people's homes were evacuated. cell phone coverage within the city of napa has been very limited so if you are trained to reach people know that it has been limited. thank you. >> the multiple fires in napa county certainly possessed a health hazard. we are asking anyone if you can taste feel or see the smoke to cease outdoor activity. certainly for the elderly and pregnant women as well as children. we are asking you to limit outside exposure. if you have any difficulty breathing or any throat irritation or coughing seek medical assistance. if you have repeated shortness of breath or wheezing with chest issues. this can all be the result of exposure to smoke. we are asking you to seek health care if you need it. on sunday evening emergency operation center was activated to coordinate around-the-clock operations and that is where you are at the sheriffs department. this includes law-enforcement health officials fire officials and other resources. we have downed trees from wind and power outages. the objective of the eoc is to resort a sense of normalcy and that includes restoring power and communication. at this time i would invite the chief to comment on any air resources or other activations. >> good morning, napa county fire chief speaking. the sonoma lake area was hit with several fires. we have talked about several of them. there are several more going this point. this fire developed rapidly. when units arrived it was 100 to 200 acres in the hills of atlas peak and it advanced quickly. lifesaving evacuations were our priorities. we have been working close with law enforcement and we were able to work on the evacuations to get folks out of the area where the fire was. it was a difficult job and there are numerous structures that were consumed during the beginning phases of the fire and at this point due to the multiple fires and limited resources. with that i will open it up to any questions. y s. now that the sun is up we have air attack overhead. we will start to prioritize the fires and where the aircraft can be used based on visibility but that is our top priority. we want to get the air resources in because as of right now we can't get in front of the fire. >> as of right now we have no containment. >> so did the fire jump from atlas? >> there were separate fire started. i have no idea what caused these fires but the atlas peak burned separately and did not cause any fires to start. we had multiple fires starting throughout the night at last count i believe there are seven in lake, sonoma and napa counties. with these winds and the low humidity we are under red flag warning for the conditions. fires can grow rapidly. >> have you ever seen something before like this with three separate fires this big starting on their own? >> yes, southern california has this happened with the high wind. in northern california it is not as common but it definitely can happen. when we have a high wind there is power outages and a lot of issues causing the fires.>> [ reporter asking question ] >> we have no reported injuries or fatalities. >> [ reporter asking question ]>> from the atlas peak fire we have up to 50 structures. homes and houses. barnes as well. whatever structures, we are not sure but it definitely buildings are burning. we will do damage assessment after we can contain the fire. the biggest priority we have is saving the lives of the people. >> [ reporter asking question ] >> i do not have any idea it could be any one of those. >> [ reporter asking question ] >> i will defer the evacuations to the sheriffs department. the fire has burned through silverado country club and has made it to wildhorse valley road to the south and into the 6800 block of silverado trail. >> [ reporter asking question ]
