night, and welcome to the reagan library. we are live from what they call the spin room at the library here in simi valley california. it was the second republican debate now in the books, and it was a debate for the ages. we're going to talk about the winners, the losers. we're going to have the analysis and we'll talk about maybe who continues on their quest to become the president and maybe who drops out of this. we're going to get into all of that. but we begin with grady trimble live at the reagan library with the highlights on this. agreedy, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, trace. they covered a lot of ground tonight from crime, education, the border and, of course, the economy. but there were some fiery moments as well. and some of the most pointed attacks of the evening were aimed at someone who wasn't even in the room. >> donald trump is missing in action. he should be on this stage tonight. he owes it to you to defend his record where they added 7.8 trillion to the debt. that set the stage for the inflation that we have. >> my former running mate, donald trump, actually has a plan to start to consolidate more power in washington, dc, consolidate more power in the executive branch. >> donald, i know you're watching. you can't help yourself. i know you're watching. okay? you're not here tonight because you're afraid of being on this stage and defending your record. you're ducking these things. and let me tell you what's going to happen. you keep doing that, no one up here's going to call you donald trump anymore, we're going to call you donald duck. >> so as you can see, some of those landed, some didn't. nikki haley and vivek ramaswamy went after each other once again, just like in the first debate, on ukraine funding and china. haley also fended off an attack from fellow south carolinaian senator tim scott. >> every time i hear you i feel a little bit dumber for what you say. >> the reality its just because putin is an evil dictator does not mean that ukraine is good. this is a country that has banned 11 opposition parties. >> a win for russia is a win for china. a win for russia is a win for china. >> excuse me. >> i forgot you like china. >> no, you'll have your chance in just a moment. hurling personal insults isn't helping. >> nikki offered a 10% gas increase in south carolina. talk about someone who has never seen a federal dollar she doesn't like. >> you got bad information. >> reporter: and there was a gnome the last five minutes of the debate where the moderators asked everyone on stage who on that stage they would eliminate in order to secure a path to beat former president donald trump. every single one of the candidates refused to answer that question directly. chris christie chimed in at the end, trace, clarifying that the person he would give the boot to is former president trump. trace? >> yeah, and i thought it was fascinating how dana perino kind of pivoted from that where she said well, do you have a mathematical way that you think you can continue on to beat the former president so the strategy was in place there. grady thank you we appreciate that. bring in chief political anchor and anchor of special report bret baier. i thought it was fascinating, bret, the debate, you and i were up kind of watching it together. and i thought there were certain things, we went into this, right, somebody had to really set themselves apart and i wonder what your overview of the entire debate was. >> well, first of all the audience in this environment was different, it was smaller, maybe it was the shadow of ronald reagan under air force one. i'm not sure. but the candidates were not different, in fact they may have been more super charged than they were in our debate in milwaukee. dana and stewart knew that going in, they were good at pulling the reigns. at one point governor burgum said i need to get in here can i speak and dana said no and moves on. i thought that was really good. overall if i had to say who's the big winner tonight? there wasn't one standout but i think governor desantis kept his fogs in the middle because he had a couple of big moments and he didn't have any trips. >> we kind of go to social media and different sites to see how people feel about this right? and there were all kinds of different opinion cumbrance, you talk to five different people you get five different responses about who won, who lost, who they think's going to stay and go. i know you had your three favorite moments of the night one with nikki haley and vivek ramaswamy. they had this back and forth over china and nikki haley it was really -- you couldn't understand what they were saying for a while and then nikki haley ended it with this. all you have to do. >> all you have to do is go watch nikki haley on youtube. >> excuse me. if you give me three times the deduction and income tax then i wouldn't apply to yours. >> secondly on the curtains do your homework tim because obama bought those core stains. >> did you send them back? did you send them back? >> that was the curtains comment at the tail end of the debate. >> actually that was one of mine because at the end of that exchange where mer' going back and forth and you can't really understand what they're saying, south carolina against south carolina about a gas tax and in the middle governor desantis steps in and says this is silly and i have a done a lot in florida, et cetera, et cetera. in other words he landed the dismount after that argument and there were a couple of those moments which is why i say desantis had a good night. >> the one we were talking about where nikki haley came in and went after vivek ramaswamy and it was about china and my son said i shut my company down in china. it happened right before you were running for president. >> yeah, i think vivek ramaswamy changed his tune this, you know, this imtoo. last time he said you were all bought and paid for. this time he said you're all wonderful republicans who might be in my cabinet. so it was a definitely term and they picked um on that quickly. >> last week we talked about chris kristi, i don't know if we had this. when chris christie went after the foreign president. >> you can do it up to six times. may not have hit the right notes. watch. . >> you're a phrased being on this stage and defending your record. you're ducking these things, and let me tell you what's going to happen, you keep doing that no one's going to call you donald trump anymore. we're going to call you donned duck. >> listen the whole pitch and looking at the camera, that was very effective i think. the dismount with donald duck i'm not sure that hit the mark but he did that a couple of times. he had a couple of different effective moves. the question is, how does this field win? how does it get down to three or four because at that point the debate becomes really interesting to be the alternative against former president trump who obviously is up 30, 40, 50 points depending on the poll you look at. >> and i know you have to go bret but it was kind of interesting and grady trimble turned on this where you should write down on the card who should be thrown off the island. right? they didn't do that but in essence she asked ron desantis what's your mathematical path, he said listen it's not the polls it's the voters that decide and we're going to go to the early states. seems to me, as vivek ramaswamy is sitting down next to you bret the field is going to be narrow the next time we do this. >> each time the poll numbers, the stipulations go up, the donor numbers go up, so it gets a little bit tougher. and that will be the challenge. and the other challenge will be, what is the path, do i have a path or not. >> right. >> so i'm going to let you talk to vivek. >> vivek ramaswamy. >> i'm go step aside and make room for you. >> thank you bret. great work on all night. >> thank you very much. >> what's that? i can't unplug? i'm going to stick around then. >> i would love to chat with both of you. >> listen he can't tear himself away from this he's loves it so much. he's been here hours and hours, let's talk to vivek ramaswamy who took shots at other candidates. vivek thank you for coming over. what did you think of your performance tonight? >> i was happy with how we did. and to be honest with you the first debate i was quite surprised, you were on that stage, when many of those candidates came at me. i think that tonight i'm focused on moving to a different campaign on this campaign. i'm not against any people on this stage. in in some ways i reintersecteded on this, i am the new guy in this race and i want to earn the trust as people across this country i embrace that. i want to surround myself as people who will challenge me, who question me, who will disagree with me. that's how i built my businesses successfully and how i will reunite this country. even though they're coming for me i'm not bothered by that or against any of them. i'm running for this country and if we're going to reunite this country, we're going to have to reunite this party first and i'm cut out for the job. >> bret and i were talking earlier, nikki haley and you had it, you were talking about china and she said you shut it down before you ran for president. she got a lot of applause and a lot of resist center city. what did you think of that. >> sean: i think it was a fall anden fair attack what i was going to retort with, she's one of many governors who courted chinese government into her own state. the fact of the matter is i did something very few americans ceo had. i made a clear pledge not to do business in china when i started my second company, strive because we talk about those experiences. i talk about it a lot but reality isr single ceo is beholden to the ccp. there's a reason on this network the last couple years i'm the most local ceo who's been an opponent of businesses doing business in china because i understand that threat from a reagan's perspective right? ronald reagan's position against the soviet union. what did he say we win they lose. that's my position of the come tonight party of china and that's how i'm going to lead us. >> was it the same company hunter biden got paid. >> i have no idea what that reference was even to, to be honest with you. we actually opened a subsidiary in china, a wide range of investment that you take from people in china to do business in china, same thing from every company, black rock to apple, anybody else who has jvs. the different is i got the hell out of there and when i started my next business i made a day one commitment that no financial institution in this country has made. and i think part of the problem with our politics is china has infested every part of it. you look at every governor on that stage fromburg ham nikki haley and everything else. every american ceo has been expanding into the chinese market but we have to learn about what went wronging there to actually decouple and i understand that more deeply than most. >> reporter:. >> sean: the subject was education, you made a comment on trans gender children, i want to play this vivek, and get your response. >> i have to be very clear about this, transgenderism especially in kids is a mental health disorder. we have to acknowledge the truth of that for what it is. i met two young women early in this campaign: >> so the question is, a lot of people saying, you know, maybe that's not the best way to approach this. you can say listen, parental rights are key here but saying this is totally a mental health issues for those people. let's be very fravshg about the truth, the dsm five until recently was classified. gender dysphoria is a mental health condition. there are increased risks of suicide. think about how these policies together make no sense. on the other bherns disability acts was recently inked for transgenderism right? so activists are hailing a victory, it's inconsistent when i disagree and say the exact same thing but i come from a place of compassion. when a kid says my gender doesn't match my biological sex. yes, that means they're proceeding going through some other struggle in our lives. to get to the bottom of what that is that's going on. we have to be able to ask what's going wrong instead of hire behind beer by saying you're transphobic. i rejet that. that's cruelty. one of the things it's going to take to unite this country, i think a leader to reach the next generation, and also somebody who speaks truth when it's controversial. >> sean: did you have a dfrnt tape, seem to be the last guy, i appreciate fellow republicans and last debate, all the strings are got and paid for. >> i think the reality is these are good people tainted by a broken system and i do think the system is badly broken. super pup wild. >> you said they could be in your cabinet. >> certainly good people on that stage tainted by a broken system. i'm going in to fix that broken system. bret maybe you know this as well as i do. every politician dances to the tune of their biggest donor, no exceptions. in my case my biggest donor is me and a clout mes to be speaking the truth. it's a bipartisan problem. i don't blame the individuals i think many of the candidates have been exploited by their own super packets ♪ ♪ >> in a small way beginning the process of reuniting the party so we can move forward. >> sean: a little bit of a skirt because you said they were bought and paid for this time and now' willing to put them into your cabinet. >> we're going to make sure they're not bought and paid for by the end of this. and i'll be very clear, i'll make a commitment if ron desantis nikki haley and tim scott can make the same one, any super pac supporting me i'll say give the money back, i won't show up at your events but every one needs to say something. look at menendez and hunter biden and george sore rose funding half the prosecutors in this country. this is wrong but we have a chance to be better than the other side but that's going to rib leadership. i think it's somebody from the next ceo, somebody from the next generation to lead us to the future rather than the politics of the past. vivek thank you for coming on. volleyball, we're going to play sometime scott number 17 and we're going to bring in the senator from south carolina. watch. >> he said we were all bought and paid for. and i thought about that for a little while and said, you know, i can't imagine how you can say that knowing that you were just in business with the chinese communist party and the same people that funded hunter biden millions of dollars remains as well. >> nonsense. >> about 15 seconds. >> i want to respond. these are good people who are tainted by a broken system and it's not the fault of anybody who's involved. >> some of us are tainted. >> excuse me, excuse me. thank you for speaking while i interrepeateded. >> so we just played the back and forth between you and vivek ramaswamy, talking about bought and paid for and the whole concept of you're good people on tonight's stage and last time you were bought and paid for in there. what did you think about that, listen they're bought and paid for. all of that is going away? one of this things you have to do is have a good time on the stage but you also should tell the truth and what he said last time was wrong. and the more information about china the more with concerned i should be. not a surprise he wants to turn taiwan over to china by 2028. now we have a fact pattern that helps us see why. >> so you started out and everybody, i mean, you look at the internet, the response from the crowd was tim scott brought his energy. he brought his game tonight. and you did, you came out of the gate strong. and then it kind of tailed off. you were in the first 30 minutes, you had three questions, maybe 3.5. you jumped in there. and then there was a wild why you weren't called on. even made the joke like hey can you see me. >> i'm a big guy on that stage, big baldhead. my question is how the moderators can skip this. and they did it again and again and again. some questioner had three times and i said zero. frustrating. >> talk to one of those monitors where you're trying to put anybody else, it's the flow. it's the flow, three in the first inning, the second three. >> i would just say at the end of the day add it up because what we want is the american people to have a chance to hear what we have to say about the issues that define our future, and impact their lives today. we had an opportunity to do that on some of the issues, but did not even get a question on the creek or education, i founded the school access. four different he will men schools by the fourth grade. having information about the power of education and being completely carved out, i was stunned. >> was it your sense that you might have stopped the momentum a little bit you built up in the first 35 minutes. >> hopefully it will be self as opposed to being carved out of the system. i don't think they did it on purpose, i think they just have to be mindful of paing through their body and i'm just asking for people. >> nobody asked, except maybe chris christie, who do you vote off the island, or where does a tim scott campaign go from here. do you see a mathematical way to be the contender if part. >> of course i would not be on the debate stage. we have to have an opportunity to tell the american people why this nation can continue to do for them what it's done for me. if we can continue to show up and talk about restoring hope, retreating opportunities, back in america, back in in the corner, it's not the strength of president xi it's the weakness of president biden. i believe the contrast of style and substance is the winning ticket. >> sean: you and i both talked about this, and i'll let you go because i know you're busy. we talked about the back and forth between you and thicky haley and the curtains. i'm not sure that was effective for either one of those. >> one of the challenges is if you're going to talk about spending, when you have an idea to be a physical walk, be one. she offered an increase in taxes, $200 million for south raians. that's a problem for someone who stands there and talks about spending issues. and a state smalls south carolina to increase our gas tax by $0.10 is what she offered. two00. i've never increased taxs the. >> sean: yeah. going forward what you are you looking forward to? what do you have to hit for tim scott and his campaign to go forward? do you have to do women at the next debate. is there something that you say listen this is the brinn on the wall and i need to know on it. it says keep doing what you're doing, keep showing up, have a great time and tell the american people about the greatness of america. >> senator, >> we're bringing in doug burgum now the governor of north dakota and he's limping in because he's still, as we know, he tore his achilles tendon since the last debate. this debate was different, we have sound of governor talking about prime. watch. >> we've got the most military in terms of what we're doing in terms of law enforcement because the morale is down because we're defunding the police, the police have become the bad guys. all these jobs in america, why would you be. >> the last time you were at the debate governor welcomed you. the last time at the debate you probably have killies problem so. >> whether we had you in the studio a fuse weeks back you felt better how are you doing tonight? >> i'm doing fantastic thanks for asking and of course feel good made it deeper into the season than aaron rodgers, but good luck, good wishes to him. and kevin durant 12 months before he came back we're on track to beat that and excited to be here tonight. >> a lot of comments we had governor about your debate tonight. a lot of energy and they keep saying, you know, governor burgum's got some great energy tonight, help some really concise answers, he came in, was thoughtful about a few things but you know what? he doesn't stand a chance. i don't know if i can get behind him. what do you say though these people. i say it's sort of running backing to even say that. but the whole format the way it's set up, you have one person on stage that's one, i've been making payroll in my mid 20s longer than anybody else in this. and then i'm leading an energy state that produces more energy than opec. we talk about about the economy we don't know the economy, question. >> we talk about the border and i'm the only one, and i don't asked that kwechlt and when i was a kid in 1989 and i was in china on the way back from setting up our operations and australia, i quo into a street market being pirated. 5.5 inch floppy we were selling our software for $5 million, and we talk about cheap as opposed to talking about the guy who's actually been battling china for three decades. >> we want americans to know there's a choice up there, you don't have to pick a career politician, you can pick somebody who's done it at the pel. >> you want to talk to safety, move to north dakota. you want to talk about great education, we have the highest sat scores, come to north dakota. >> but what is the mathematical way forward. the question wad asked at the debate, nobody sea we're going to knock someone off the aisles. the question is, what is the path very path forward to you to be able to get into the top three or four to move on and compete against the president. >> the path is quite leash. >> two people ahead in the early state polls. people should be lined up based on how you're done and where you're campaigning? is it iowa. >> iowa, new hampshire we would be closer to the middle of the stage. those are the voting showing up and, of course, the former president, who i voted for twice is at 42% on a good day. that means 58 persist, and the pass is available for these are the top issues of voters, we've been talking about it since june 7th when we announced and i have other candidates on the stage that, you know, went to texas, stood in front of an oil rig they've never seen before and everything in their energy plans we've alread doing in north dakota. so a debate like this should offer the voters an opportunity to see what ewes and there's a great alternative we're looking for it. when i'm your president we'll city of philadelphia it. >> speaking of energy, i was talking to someone off stage governor burgum had a lot of energy tonight, something i heard i didn't hear in the first debate. did you change your strategy? did you know you had to come in this and make a move and, you know, make something showy so your name would hit on the internet. >> a big change in strategy was i did not play basketball yesterday. i was not standing on one leg the entire time. and i was not in extreme pain. so that would have been a difference. but we had a great debate the first time. tonight we feel really good about where we were even though we had to fight to if he into the discussion but we're going to keep fighting for the american people. >> governor thank you very much for coming on and best of luck with the leg. you're walking a lot better than last time i saw you so things are improving. >> yes, yes. yes. >> sean: to jeff paul, take a look at the top three final moments of the debate and with that jeff fall is live in the la news room just down the road. stuff that's kind of setting the internet a blaze. good evening. >> sean: yeah, trace, hard to pick just three, maybe of them surrounding changes of vivek ramaswamy and all the other candidates standing on the stage since it seems the first debate where ramaswamy was taking aim at most republicans, during the second debate they fought back. >> some of us aren't painted. >> excuse me, excuse me. thank you for speaking while i'm interrupting. >> honestly every time i hear you i feel a little bit dumber for what you say. >> this is a country that has banned opposition parties. >> a win for russia is a win for china. >> excuse me. >> i forgot you like china. >> reporter: other moments they got reaction, candidates taking their picture with donald trump. formgovernor chris kristi and ron desantis pointed out trump and the current state of inflation. >> donald trump hides behind the walls of his golf clubs and won't show up here to answer questions like all the rest of us are up here to answer. he if you wants seven trillion on the debt ceiling, he owes it to you to defend his record where they added 7.8 trillion to the debt. that set the stage for the inflation. >> nearly ought the candidates at one point broke did debate rules whether it was interrupting each other, going over time or just simply not answering the question. trace, at one point moderator dana perino i don't know if you caught this, threatened to cut the mic he had on stage, north dakota, burg ham if he didn't stop talking. that i say. >> sean: yeah and we just had the governor back and it is a not bad. jeff paul live for us, let's bring in fox news contributor steve hilton and earn perriney. evan so great to see you. >> steve thank you for coming on. >> of course. >> i just want your overall take of what you thought, you talked about the different candidates and we talked about vivek ramaswamy and the governor doug burgum and senator tim scott all clearly different take a ways from this. what did you see? what was a big moment for you. >> one bing thing i took away from tonight, although it may be hard to pick a winner perhaps in different categories i'll get to nah in a second. there was one clear loser, and cranitis what he's fog. no one is interested in what he had to say. i think he needs to get nouchlt now. vivek ramaswamy had a strong performance on the substance, the arguments he was making i think really were the ones that stood out in terms of offering inspiring positive vision for the future. anymorey haley i thought did well up until the moment she unleashed that absolutely unnecessary vicious insult, calling someone else dumb? that's going to hurt herself hard, ron desantis i think had an sock night but didn't do enough to get his campaign on to the trajectory he wants. the comment he was saying vivek ramaswamy was calling and every time i listen to you which by the way the internet didn't love it. a lot of people responded negatively to that comment. what were your response to the debate. >> there was a winner, governor ron desantis you saw a clear focused message from the governor. not only an election but you don't see donald trump doing that too afraid to show up on a debate stage but he has a record talks about that record and talk about a positive vision for you. talk about it withr other candidate on this stage, whether it's energy independence, future of the military, the only person who has the experience and has been able to set the stage. you kept hearing him say guys stop with theering aing let's take focus what americans to the american people. especially here in california, over six bucks for a gallon of gas? >> reporter: that is what you saw from ron desantis tonight and absolutely brilliant. >> ilia: i was walking through the crowd and asking some people who i really trust and we got a lot of ron desantis, r. >> we have some vivek ramaswamy and even some doug burgum as i was telling you, i was very surprised at the answers he gave and theer in she has. i want to play nikki haley talking about the border and we'll get your response. >> or we can play ron desantis. >> i liked that one. >> this is sound bite number two, katie, if you can get this. it's nikki haley, it runs 23 seconds, i'm not sure we can find this. if not let me know and we'll move on. but nikki haley when she's talking about the border. play this. >> first of all, defund sanctuary cities. you see what's happening in philadelphia right now, it's got to stop. we need to make sure we put 25,000 more border patrol and ice agents on the crowned and let them do their job. i spent 400 miles down that border and i'm telling you border patrol agents aren't allowed to do their job. let's go back to remain in mexico policy. instead of catch and release. so you go throughout the candidate hilton but then tim scott started off really well but then asked questions in the middle of the debate. and ron did exactly what he needed to do to keep moving forward and probably remain the number one candidate right now behind the former president. and nikki haley a lot of people liked the performance of nikki haley and like where she stands. >> i agree but it's interesting questions like the border, some economic questions there wasn't a lot of difference between the candidates, they articulated a similar position. ron desantis can point out he's actually done it and he made a much better job of demonstrating that tonight and conveying that he had actually done it than he did in the first debate. but on the actual question of who's going to deliver any of this, i think in the end it's not just what they say, the policy -- it's what they convey in terms of leadership. and i do think that, on that measure started off strongly. really degenerated, i think. and i think that insult started the drift away, actually quite a strong performance in the beginning. in the end she was scrapping with ten scott i felt she really didn't do herself any players and i think by the end to send you the. >> debate number three, ron desantis nikki haley will be the one everyone continues to be watching. i thought doug bur ham stood out for fresh perspective and some people take another look at them. >> reporter: i know you're a big ron desantis fan and the former president looks at this and says maybe i should dip my toe into one of these debates but if you look, there was no big movement in this -- in these standardr candidates and i think i'm better off sitting on the sideline. >> i think fordesantis makes this pond said it at the campaign trail and at the top of this deit ba. no one agencies entitled to this nomination, you want to be the republican nomination you have to show up defend your record. >> it's 35 points ahead so it's one of those things saying it's hard to make a compelling argument. some polls have him further ahead than that and it's very difficult to make an argument that you need to come out. it's like being ahead by 38 points and they said well you need do, we don't need to do anything because we're 38 points ahead. they need to do something to catch me. >> donald trump can't help himself. if you continue to tell him time after time, you you need to show up up and of course he will, because it's all about donald trump. what you saw on this stage night is the future of the republican party, people who want to show up who will go to 99 counties in hawaii, don't do five weeks, they do five events in one day, and donald trump may feel high and mighty being in a good shop but you better watch himself. and when it comes to you, when you have 14,000 people committed to caucus for you, in iowa right now, 13,000 by august. you are a looking at huge numbers and how you bow build the momentum digging a side chick. if i doesn't want to show up on debate stage every republican should take say slap in the five. >> i got. to go. but 15 seconds wrap it up. >> i won't be at all surprised if he's in the next debate. i think he especially joys it and i think that he will be looking at this field, looking at it. >> i think that's i a lot. >> i don't think he will be thinking that so i wouldn't be at all surprised if we see him on a debate stage very soon. >> steve hilton pattern reasony. thank you very much >> the question we keep asking and checking back and forth, what are people saying, what was viral, what points hit and what points didn't. marianne rafferty joins us live with that part of the story. marianne good evening. >> hi trace throughout the debate we kept an eye on google trends monitoring what americans were searching and who they were searching about. take a look at these trend lines, search interests in businessman vivek ramaswamy took off as well as former u n ambassador nikki haley. it appears interest in governor ron desantis dipped but picked back up at the end of the debate. when it comes to social media trends, vivek trended through much of the debate and while president trump was absent, donned dunk also picked up a lot of attention. who appeared to break through, gone pole sister noted tim scott went on the offense, tim scott on the attack i never thought i would see the day. mary bono sayingburg and seems to be the most unscripted contestant on the stage hashtag refreshing. but to the voices to you at home and here's what you told us. in fact they all disappointed me and i don't think this was much of a series of single question interviews. another said trump won and all i saw were a bunch ever children bickering. the consensus is if they saw a mire fiery and they were turned it off by all the infighting. back to you now. >> maryanne thank you. let's bring in federal litigator vick ba sang. i was on the debate i don't know if i could look down and bret made a good point earlier saying, you know, it was fascinating because there wasn't 5,000 people so the crowd wasn't nearly as rowdy tonight. i just want your thoughts and we talk about some of the legalities. you put your lawyer hat on in a second but what do you debate what you've seen tonight. >> i'm impressed there was a lot of energy on this stage, very great to point it out, there were hundreds of thousands of necklaces up here. >> i thought all candidates did that. that's the good, the bad is the way most people did it, i don't think most people appreciate the attacks on the other candidates for the position. i thought the energy was good. i felt there was a bit too much negativity, frankly, but all gentleman points were raised on a global ohio. >> a couple big points, they did a lot about china more than they thought we were going to do. there was a lot of talk about the economy, because it was on fox business. >> and they did talk about crime and education. and on crime, this is number throne. ron desantis on california crime. watch this. >> just being in southern california over the last couple case, my wife and i have met. >> three people who have been mugged on the street and that would have never happened tenor ten or 20 years ago. we support the men and women of law enforcement keeping us safe. >> almost like he's warming up with his debate against gavin newsom. >> southern california the crime is an issue and we see this and talk about it a lot. >> absolutely as a defense litigator throughout the state and the united states i've seen where the rubber hits the road and the amount of mental illness that leads to i will netses is tremendous. what governor desantis did was to astutely bring it back to a level where everyone can relate to crime. zips it's hard to relate to and iffing ukraine whether it's a good idea or bad. that when you talking about muggings everyone rides and knows about, it is as common as governor desantis said it really strikes home. >> it's interesting because you wonder when you talk about strikes homes, you listen to the candidates, we know that for the biden administration, crime is an issue. people all over the country are looking at the crime stats in some of these. the economy is another issue that the polls are all against him. chris christie was talking about his record as a prosecutor in new jersey saying that, you know, he set records in new jersey for prosecuting people. is it a good tactic? is that something when you talk about a debay. >> someone who will put some consequences on the i believe take for those who commit crimes. >> absolutely but to a point. i think backing the blue is a and the takes particular mantra to push out there and a lot of voters sympathize with that, they relate to that especially in a world now, in a nation now where defunding the police happened to be soup today i don't remember a couple years ago and now many people are feel the effects of that negatively. >> i appreciate that. what i don't think what eastern appreciate is the over del us. i think many times that bravado and name calling and i'm going to be the toughest person to lock everyone up also alienates a certain amount of conservatives who would otherwise be on board with governor christie. >> nikki haley was saying, she said it a couple times, we have to come out and supply in the wake of law enforcement. even defund police, we've gotten away with that. people are trying to refund the police, they're trying to get people back but it's tough. you look at every city anymore, they're having troubles hiring mraufshgs getting people. own with cash bonuses and you name it because the police officers just don't feel like the politicians in their cities have nair backs. and so this is going to be a problem for the next few years and i think this is an effective campaign strategy for these people to go after. beyond a shadow of a doubt trace. i think this is what strikes home with most of the undecided voters out there that had an opportunity to listen to this debate. to be a police officer, we've did you haved this before. usually it's a legacy or offer yes. and that's i great thing for you to do because they did it well but nowadays with the pay that officers get and all the ramifications from lawsuits civilly to internal affairs investigations to actually being put on social media and your career and reputation completely eliminated, vigorously, why would the juice be worth the skeet when you're getting paid a third on what you could over a part-time technology job. >> i want to say it's the first time i've ever heard vehicle bajaj use the juice squeeze metaphor but i think it works. thank you. appreciate it. thanks for coming on. >> coming up highlights, there are low lights. bring in sell national correspondent kevin court with some of tonight's maybe 'em i can fails is too strong kevin corke, but there was definitely things that fell flat. >> good evening. >> more or less the same thing. as you know they're out of the yellow, but on the occasion the lows can impose. i think the real drag is on a candidate moving forward. tonight notably highs and lows, if they were few and far between. a few moments garnered attention like this one, of course, the man dominating in the polls, former president trump. >> donald i know you're watching. i can't help yourself. i know you're watching. okay? and you're not here tonight. not because of polls or your indictments. you're not she ever tonight of being on this stage and defending your record. you're ducking these things. let me tell you what's going to happen, you keep doing that, no one's going to call you donald trump anymore, we're calling you donald duck. mean rile former vp hmm one clip about unions. as for how it land, you be the judge. >> you mentioned the president's situation. my wife isn't a member of the teachers union but i've got to admit i've been sleeping with a teacher for 38 years. and full disclosure. >> and left we forget, former south carolina governor nikki haley joining the firing line taking this shot at the popular upstart, vivek ramaswamy. >> this is infuriating because tik tok is one of the most dangerous social media apps that we could have. >> what you have, honestly every time i hear what you say. >> there was that. after the debate you probably saw this if you saw sean hannity's coverage. he said listen i'm not adding from those on stage i'm running for the highest on the land smchlt places land chriss. others not so much trace. >> we keep talking about this kevin as you know they have politicians the. >> comedy is about typing and the timing of the politicians seemings to be a little bit off tonight with their jokes, they practice them and sometimes they tend to fall flat. >> yeah, i think so. >> the whole venue affected that probably. all right, man. >> yeah, i think you're right. meantime let's bring in board certified md and ph.d. research scientist dr. houman hemmati. dr. hemmati great to have you on as always, let's get into the topics which were perfect nab have the field, the debate itself, was it something you felt moved the needle for candidates. >> sean: yeah, this is a great question. this is very ener yet i can, not only were they yelling over each other a lot. i thifl governor desantis in particular came across at many of the other candidates. he was restrained, he was confident in his answers, and he fell could handle the job. i think ramaswamy was also just not as forceful to have everybody. i wouldn't say hurt but he's doing it in a very measured sort of way and i think that may resonate with people. >> you and i have talked for several months now about the whole education system and you kind of made your name in southern california by trying to point out some of these covid man dates that maybe there needed to be robust debate and other ideas in the mix. -this. >> chris christie is talking about the public schools, sound bite number 7. >> this public school system is no longer run by the public. it is run by the teachers union in this country. randi weingarten and her crew are actually tra strangling. they're taking the worst of their members and defending them rather than advocating for our kids. >> not just new jersey. dr. human we know it's happening in california. we know there are protests in states across the. >> on public schools. >> they do because they're funding the politicians. california teachers association is one of the biggest financeers of all, they own the city, the state. but you have to keep in mind we have to differentiate benefit the teachers and their june i don'ts, the unions are doing nefarious things and are working against the teachers, financially but not in terms of education, when you look at the table i was supposed to mind extra and i got involved. >> they're the ones that were there gating paid low opportunity and educating our children, we intrust our kids to them. >> show that their unions are not benning them and try to get them to move away from unions and having politicians the benefits and the yaw protection that they need without the union having the step in and do anything right. >> it's fair to say they love the teachers and the question as we brought up many times is the parents do not like is the school in activities and things subject their kids are going through, dr. houman hemmati great to have you on as always. >> thank you trace. >> let's bring in former state department spokesperson, morgan ortagus. i'm cavityius as you got worse, where you think all of these fleets go from here. >> as a former policy professional i was excited we heard more about china tonight. we heard china might take military operation in taiwan in 2023, the next administration potentially of someone on that stage. i think it's an important debate you had here, few one liners, you can see peck checking on, he stopped doing business with china around the time you started voting. >> they're good, tell me axle road without telling,le rod. >> just a candidate really it was him talking about china. it wasn't in the political discourse the way that we saw it tonight. so i do think that was very positive. i think the main thing that was happening on the debate tonight was actually something that was going on behind the scenes and off the stage. what do i mean by that? we're about to end -- and the candidates are all going to have to file their third quarter filing results for their fund raising ability. we have probably about a month, three or four weeks until the next debate in miami. the rules will be even more strinten. the reason you saw so much feistiness from people who were not as argumentative last time is candidates are fighting for their life. they know they only have a few weeks before the numbers come out and a few weeks to impress donors. one more important point, the coke brothers that have a large grass roots around the country, a lot of last minute resources, they want it to be an anti trump candidate they will make that decision after these went to the gym. that's what they were all fighting for. >> yeah. there's going to be a big change that's the next debate morgan. you have the top three or four it's going to be very difficult for some to take the next level. great to have you on as always. i want to bring back steve hilton and never back down director erin perriney because she makes a good point following, i have a nice toot about the going forward for these candidates, there's going to be some natural attrition. >> she's exactly right. the reason candidates tend to drop out of a race, nothing to do with poles or anything but must be. that's the thing that he losses by three. >> i think he doesn't get money past tonight. he has money behind him so he can keep going in that way. the corps three. >> i got it. flare vague got them. they are the ones that should be there to take on donald trump. so loot ahead it's going to be very interesting to see if donald trump is there, which one emerges as the real challenger. >> yeah. and i wonder erren without wake any names, can you really have four, five or 6. >> the only way you can truly waltle the former president of of the snits is to have too many ways. >> that's right and to morgan's point you going dorms they're not going to have the numbers and the polling to be able to be there and the less people on the stage it means more opportunity for people to really hone in. there were two-thirds of the republican and electric who love the dump and love from the more opportunity you get to hear from people like governor ron desantis about his strategy for the country and about a pat forward for our nation. so that's what's really important in the primary. >> it's important we got governor desantis name in there one more time, thank you both. we very much appreciate your time. there you have it the second one in the books, this was spectacular at the reagan library, unbelievable and thanks for watching america late news torques i'm trace gallagher live from los angeles, we'll see my house growing up. every time i get out of the shower, i would itch. my first into a separate building, i told you lost your mind. >> streaming now on fox nation ,an all new episode of the groundbreaking series featuring an exclusive interview with a clerk who's been accused of
