continues its path of destruction across georgia and the carolinas. matt finn is live in saint pete florida which appears to have just taken a glancing blow. matt, good evening. >> reporter: yeah, trace, it's calm right now but much different conditions here just 8-12 hours ago here in the tampa bay area. a lot of good news coming out of this region tonight. first of all, the bridges were reopened to the barrier islands which means, you know, residents and business owners can get back in to assess their properties. we did a tour of this region and we did not see any major damage here. but last night and into early this morning, there was soaking wind and very powerful rain, saint pete beach police say they rescued someone from a mobile home park on the island and we saw sheriffs deputies out all night and putting their lives on the line. saint pete beach was under mandatory evacuation and from our assessment it seems most people evacuated or just stayed inside. this morning as the sun came up there were neighborhoods and homes that had low level flooding but fortunately the water receded rather quickly here today. we're told a combination of hurricane idalia's storm surge combined with the blue moon ace high tide pushed water from the gulf of mexico into the neighborhoods here but fortunately no major injuries or loss of life reported here tonight. as floridians do, trace, you know, they recover and they push through these types of storms and tonight a lot of the focus remains now up to the north in georgia and the carolinas where this storm may have had a much greater impact, trace. >> trace: we will check on that, matt finn live for us in saint pete thank you. let's bring in pj brashear volunteer, and bryan stern, founder bryan stern rather, founder and ceo of the project dynamo. to you first bryan, i know that you were anticipating a lot of high water rescues it didn't quite happen. what do you think is attributed to that? >> i think, you know, we saw a lot of damages as many people did but i this think this is a testament to governor desantis leadership, he mobilized resources, he got a lot a lot of things on the street. all the electrical guys were out, the national guard was out and people listened to the warnings to evacuate. so i'm not aware actually of any loss of life with this disaster. you know, if we compare this to maui, my team and i just got back from maui where it was so poorly handled from a disaster perspective, yes, there's damage and pretty messed up but better. >> trace: that's a very good example. pj this turned out to be a high water event. i know that. what are you looking at up in georgia that we know about right now? okay, apparently we do not have pj. let's go back to bryan. bryan, i'm concerned. are you worried about -- because you talked about the response in florida being so robust. are you worried about other areas? talking about eight, nine, ten inches of rain in georgia, and then kind of going through the carolinas. do you mobilize up there next? >> yeah. project dynamo, we're entirely donor funded, we're a rescue organization, we don't do recovery, per se. and we like to operate where the government isn't. so depending on how the governments of georgia and alabama and the surrounding states react and respond, we'll dictate whether or not we search north or not. right now here in florida, there doesn't seem to be a large rescue portion at this time. georgia remains to be seen. but, again, project dynamo.org is where people can go to donate. we are donor funded and rescue organization, so we'll go where help is needed. >> trace: we finally got pj back and i was talking about the high water event this turned out to be pj. what are you looking for in georgia and the areas that you're scouring right now? >> okay. so -- [audio disruption] >> minor. our biggest concern is the [inaudible] >> trace: pj we're going to stop you right there, we think we have to get reconnected with you. if i can get back to bryan quickly. bryan, you say that gray space is the thing that your team operates in. what does that mean exactly, gray space? >> the gray space is where the government isn't is the best way to think about it. so today marks the two-year anniversary of the failed withdraw from afghanistan of we deployed to afghanistan because the government left and left a lot of our allies and a lot of american citizens behind. that's why we like to work. so places where the government isn't, for whatever the reasons are, because they left, because they're not coming or because they're not there yet which is often what we see with natural disasters. and like what we saw in maui and hurricane ian and in this case we did not see that which is a blessing. very good news story. >> trace: it is a blessing bryan stern you and your team do yeoman's work thank you for coming on we appreciate it >> meanwhile governor ron desantis is a break from the campaign trail and leading his state on the hurricane. does this hurt or help his numbers kevin corke has that angle. >> reporter: good evening trace, to use a baseball expression this is right in the governor's wheel house which means it's a natural strength of his managing crisis across florida. and that means the governor will be off the campaign trail for just a bit. however it's just an opportunity for him to not only furniture his reputation naturally but also to serve the people in the state of florida in their hour of need. >> the storm hit land fall probably about 8:00 a.m. this morning. we've since restored 370,000 power to customers, and there's about 175,000 outstanding. so all those linemen have been working to get people back connected. we know that there's going to be a lot of things we need to do but we want to get everybody back on their feet as quickly as possible. >> reporter: meantime former vp mike pence and south carolina senator tim scott were back on the campaign trail today making stops in the great state of iowa, home of the first of the nation gop caucus of course. while over in new england, north dakota governor dug burgrum was chatting up ahead of the first gop primary state, that being new hampshire. and there's this, desantis's campaign is laughing off a suggestion tonight by former president donald trump that he might drop out of the presidential race. he said that on truth social. he called it a, quote, rumor, spelled it with two os. the desantis camp is calling it fake news trace. >> trace: kevin, thank you >> let's bring in managing editor of townhall.com spencer brown and district media group president beverly hallberg. welcome both. beverly the rescue teams not sure if you heard it are praising ron desantis's actions during this hurricane. does this help him? the presidential campaign or is it not a factor? >> well, he gets a lot of earned media so from that standpoint it's great to see him on all the airwaves. here's the thing. he is somebody who is a known quantity as a governor, someone who's handled natural disasters in his state but also has strong name i d based on how he handled covid. so a less known governor going through a similar situation would get a bigger bump in the polls than we are going to see from desantis because people know him this is what he's good at. at the end of the day it doesn't hurt him doesn't necessarily help him a ton but at least people are talking about desantis on the airwaves and not necessarily as much about the other candidates. >> trace: you would think spencer if he's good at this and did a good job people would take notice. he said this on hannity a short time ago. watch. >> the good news is, is that we have not seen the type of loss of life like we did with hurricane ian in the coastal areas. they experienced significant storm surge most people did evacuate so we're cautiously optimistic we're going to end up okay on that. >> trace: he made it clear in the news conferences, he was focused on idalia wanted nothing to do with the presidential race for the time being. >> no matter who your pick is in 2024 governor desantis is putting on a master class how to handle and lead through a crisis whether it be the preparation or the spens, it's been less than 24 hours since the hurricane made land fall and already 6500 hundred of roads have been cleared and they restored power to customers. as pointed out the debate stage a lot of people talking how he leads and he's showing how he leads and that is a benefit to him. as beverly pointed out this is the first time in recent memories the airwaves have not been dominated by what's been going on in courts with the former president. >> trace: good point. talking about leadership and also about age, because it came up today with mitch mcconnell. watch this. >> your thoughts on running for reelection in 2026. >> what are my thoughts about what? >> running for reelection in 2026. >> oh. that's a -- >> did you hear the question senator? running for reelection in 2026? >> yes. >> all right, i'm sorry y'all, we're going to need a minute. >> trace: very difficult to watch beverly and it's not the first time. >> no, it's not the first time this is the second incident where he has had a freezing episode in a press conference. these have happened since he had that concussion in march when he fell at a dc hotel. i'm not a doctor, i can't say exactly what is taking place but the doctors who have spoken on it, this seems to be concerning. not something that's a one-time thing, obviously it's happened twice, and i think a lot of people are asking about the age factor, whether it be mitch mcconnell, joe biden, senator feinstein, there are a lot of questions about age right now. >> trace: there are, and if you look at joe biden, you look at this ap north pole put it up on the screen overall is biden too old to effectively sopher another four year term overall 77%. the big surprise there is democrats, 69% spencer. it's a big number. >> yeah, it's definitely a bigger number than the president or his campaign team would like to see. but i think it shows just how much joe biden is running against, which includes himself. it's not just his record for the last two or so years, it's also the fact, the sort of display he puts on is not inspiring confidence in the american people and that's another hurdle he has to overcome if he makes it all the way through to november. >> reporter: spencer brown beverly hallberg thank you both. >> thanks stressed smash and grab thieves in california strike again a jewelry store in pasadena now down a half million dollars. jeff paul is live with the video and the whole story of how this went down jeff good evening. >> reporter: trace this was the latest smash and grab robbery that's happened here in southern california. we've evened them unravel at malls designer stores and now a family owned jewelry store. police in pasadena say they got calls about a robbery just before 2:00 p.m. on tuesday at a local jewelry store. the shop's owner says he was escorting a guest out when three masked men pushed their way into the shop wearing gloves. they then pepper sprayed the shop owner. the thieves then started shattering display cases using hammers. despite officers arriving to the scene quickly, the masked men were in and out in two minutes. the shop's owner says they got away with at least a half a million dollars worth of jewelry. >> this is my business of 48 years. this is what i did, and i don't know what my future holds. this store -- i don't even know what i would do tomorrow morning t i really don't know what am i going to be doing. because this was my life. this is the place that gave food to my family. >> reporter: tough to listen to. the owner says he has been in the jewelry business for 50 years and this is the first time anything like that has happened. trace, so far no arrests. >> trace: yeah. very difficult to watch that guy because a lot of people, a lot of customers are affected by these types of crimes. jeff paul live for us here in la. jeff, thank you. ♪ >> trace: well, meantime the fox news at night common sense department watches new video almost every day showing gangs of young retail thieves robbing what they please from a variety of california stores then walking or running out with lots of merch and zero consequences. the primary reason for no penalties is because in california these types of crimes are not considered serious and that's a pattern in the golden state. not just theft or robbery. state legislatures, most of home are democrats. >> also refuse, ironically, to classify domestic violence as a violent crime. in fact it turns out any crime that does not appear on the state's list of 23 violent crimes is not a violent crime, including some forms of rape, sorry sexual offenses, and beating up your spouse. it's interesting that between 2014 and 2019, 68% of the mass shooters in america had a history of domestic violence. don't get common sense wrong, there was a push in california to classify domestic violence as violence, but state democrats are so committed to criminal justice reform and no cash bail, that making tougher laws is never a consideration. common sense finds it very pa ar that in california, the state assemblies public safety committee is telling sex offenders spouse peters and retail robbers to just re, la. let's bring in criminal defense attorney vik bajaj. vik great to have you. really is kind of you look down the list of those 23 crimes, the violent crimes and if it's not on there you're not getting the big sentence that's the way it works. >> that's right. and let's not forget, there's a distinction violent crime and serious crime in the state of california. so if you have a violent crime it's considered a strike. if you have a strike, you only get 15% credits. if it's just a serious crime but not violent, you're only serving half time in all likelihood you're getting probation. so very violent offenses may not be classified as violent legally, therefore, it's essentially in some jurisdictions a slap on the wrist rather than potentially prison time. >> trace: it's interesting to me because you look at the video jeff paul was just showing of the pasadena smash and grab and you listen to the owner of the store lost a half million in jules, it's heart wrenching when you hear these people because they're not just going after the stores vik they're going after customers and society. these are assaults on society. >> that's correct and these are test cases in a very important way trace, i'm so glad you brought this up. if you had the same set of facts in different jurisdictions within california, you have different punishments. why? we heard that there was a momentary tussle between the perpetrators and the shop owner. well, that's what we call, in the world of criminal defense, an estes robbery. that's serious and violent. but many district attorneys around our state of california refuse to prosecute them as such and instead order their deputy district attorneys on the line to issue lower and lesser charges. >> trace: yeah. i want to put this up on the screen assembly bill 1186 it says the bottom line is, rather than charge youth ab11 86 proposing retiring the california victim compensation board to pay the restitution to crime victims directly. so don't give any kind of punishment to the kids or their families or so forth let's have the state pay those bills. >> that's right. and the real logic behind this is if you can't squeeze blood out of a rook somebody needs to pay the compensation. the problem is when you're in juvenile court you're 18 years or younger by definition. most of these younger individuals don't have the resources which means their parents, who may be absent or not providing the proper supervision are on the hook. it's a way to provide compensation but also lessen the burden for criminal actors, therefore leading the way toward more recidivism in the future. >> trace: if you look at the video we are he a finding out in the san francisco bay area on social media they gin up this flash mob and what happens is stuff like this. this time in the bay area they went into a target, there were hundreds of kids the employees all had to hide in the stock room to get away from these things but now they're getting more and more argued. this is really becoming a bigger bigger threat to california. >> that's right. more and more organized and that's why we have the secret service, because identity theft, and we also have unity of multi jurisdictional entities like the sheriffs department, attorney generals office police department county and state and city prosecutors joining forces to attack it. about you the fear for the community is not only the shop owners but the shoppers because it's not only theft now it's getting more and more organized, as you point out but also much more violent. and so then where does it end? do we have to have shootings and a stabbing like in that example you just portrayed before people finally get the lesson and the legislatures make the punishment much more strict. >> trace: you talk about violence in the bay area, there was a clerk, somebody came in looking for two beers, beat the clerk, the clerk died. and you think, it's just -- it is nonsensical, vik. >> i couldn't agree with you more. now this was an individual who came into the store, stole a couple of bottles of water then came back and the store keeper, who became a united states citizen only eight months ago wheeleded a bat and said hey you can't do that here. the perpetrator took the bat and
