more previously unknown visits to the white house back in 2016. as attorney general merrick garland faces growing pressure to appoint a special prosecutor. an argument today before the supreme court over whether or not the biden administration could do away with the trump administration's migrant protection protocol commonly known as the remain in mexico policy. arizona attorney general mark brnovich is standing by live to weigh in. we have team coverage tonight in the twitter verse in an uproar over elon musk's $44 million deal to take over the giant. we begin with trace gallagher on those apparently not taking the news so well like twitter employees. let's begin with the company itself. many of twitter's current employees were either so shocked or distraught by elon musk's $44 billion buyout they couldn't compel themselves to speak out about his push to promote free speech. in fact, all some employees could muster was a tear-filled emoji or meme of emotional distress. those that did speak had mostly the same concerns that musk would undo the censorship mechanism they had put in place. some misinformation researchers, you know, the ones that flagged the pesky hunter biden laptop story also believe musk will damage the brand. here's a former twitter employee who had no problem speaking out. watch. >> that's what is worrisome to me. he talks about free speech. is it really free speech or is it i just don't want to be accountable for the terrible things i say? >> reporter: in the meantime twitter executives used a townhall format to convince employees the deal was financially good for twitter and musk could do some good things. while the workers wonder what the buyout means for their company, others wonder what it means for the world. amazon founder and "washington post" owner jeff bezos responded to a question posed by the "new york times" that asked if tesla's reliance on china as a major buyer of electric cars and supplier of electric car batteries might be an issue. bezos then tweeted quoting here, interesting question. did the chinese government just gain a bit of leverage over the town square? after stirring the pot, bezos went onto answer his own question by saying china probably did not gain leverage. if the left is spiraling, the right is soaring. conservatives now eager to see how this robust debate plays out. >> they converted it from a place of open-air ideas and forums and discussions and debates to just sort of hard left orthodoxy. every institution they take over, they convert. what's different about twitter? >> reporter: many two disagree with musk and conservatives have threatened to leave twitter altogether. that, shannon, we shall see. >> shannon: yes, we shall. trace gallagher, thank you very much. let me ask you this, trace, before you go. there were things musk talked about before he bought twitter he might want to change about this platform. what can he be planning potentially? >> reporter: elon musk as you may or may not know has repeatedly said he wants an "edit" button to the right. he claims 74% of his 80+ million twitter followers agree but musk says the user should only have the capability to use the edit button for a short period of time. now, he also wants to allow long form tweets. twitter started at 140 characters back in 2017. now it's 280. unclear what mr. musk would like that new limit to be. he also has vowed to "defeat the spam bot on "or die trying. musk calls the bots twitter's sing the most annoying problem. he wants to authenticate all real humans. elon musk also supports an open-source algorithm which will make users much more aware on what twitter decides what appears on their feed. he thinks it's for transparency and cuts down on bias. content moderation, twitter shouldn't regulate content by the laws of the countries that twitter operates in. that's an establishment of the elon musk to-do list. >> shannon: put me down as pro-edit button. what about you, trace? >> reporter: yes! you have to edit everything! that's the nature of our business. >> shannon: there might be a spell check here or there. thank you, trace. good to see you. >> reporter: you as well. >> shannon: new covid funding, additional aid for ukraine and border chaos and plans to repeal 42. congressional correspondent chad pergram shows us more tonight. >> reporter: ukraine, covid, title 42, all subjects this week on capitol hill, but congress is atwitter over twitter. democrats pushing a dislike button. republicans liking the deal. >> twitter has been a dark, dark place. i hope it doesn't get any darker. >> we're all watching it with a great deal of interest, because there's certainly a share of complaints on the way it was run in the past. >> reporter: some lawmakers didn't even need 280 characters to describe the deal. republicans have long been skeptical certain social media firms aren't fair to their viewpoints deleting their content. >> there's a much greater chance we'll see a true platform of ideas that musk is taking control of it. >> reporter: g.o.p. georgia representative says she's hoping that the deal will restore her personal account. some say that a musk-driven twitter puts democracy "at risk." >> when a billionaire amasses this much power, there's different rules for him than everyone else. >> reporter: hiding behind section 230, a legal shield which says companies aren't responsible for what's posted on their sites. the sale could intensify that debate. >> the fact the left and the right diametrically opposed problems with it and therefore different solutions means section 230 stuff probably isn't going anywhere. >> reporter: some lawmakers aren't even logged onto the controversy about musk's new toy. >> i think he's a twit, i think that's a nice parallel, but other than that, i got other things on my mind. >> reporter: twitter is trending in congress for now. after a while, the issue could lose followers. shannon? >> shannon: thank you very much! so the attorney general is facing new pressure tonight to appoint a special prosecutor for the investigation into hunter biden's business dealings. merrick garland says the case looking into president biden's son is being handled by a attorney in delaware. that's not sitting well by the president's critics that want more answers and a special prosecutor. here is more tonight from the justice department. >> we do have any reason to dispute the evidence that indicates president biden was involved in and using money for hunter biden's deals. >> reporter: declining to answer with specifics, attorney general merrick garland was peppered with business republican lawmakers about the ongoing federal investigation. >> do we need a special prosecutor to look into the hunter biden, you know, affair? >> question of whether to have a special council is one that internal decisions are being made in the departments. i don't want to make judgments one way or the other. >> reporter: hunter biden made millions about what are questionable business deals in both ukraine and china. if republicans win the house or senate this fall, they pledge to investigate the younger biden. trump-appointed u.s. attorney david weis in delaware is running the probe. garland also pressed on other high-profile subjects at today's senate hearing. >> i think the justice department is losing. i think you're losing on crime. >> do you agree that the government's inability to secure the southern border has led to more drugs coming into our country? >> the job of a justice department is to fight a large-scale drug trafficking organization and organizations that are bringing these drugs into the country. >> reporter: the attorney general also questioned on another dire issue, rising crime rates in cities large and small. >> there is no one solution fits all that the federal government can suggest to state and local law enforcement. >> reporter: hunter biden hasn't been charged with a crime, however, sources confirm grand jury hearings indicate have accelerated in recent weeks. shannon? >> shannon: david, thank you very much. as chaos continues at the southern border, the controversy over the biden administration's planned termination of title 42 continues tonight amid the mourning for a national guardsman who lost his life trying to save two illegal immigrants in the rio grande. correspondent bill is in eagle pass, texas, tonight where the border crisis shows no signs of letting up. >> reporter: as sure as the sun rises, illegal crossings continue in eagle pass, texas. this small group of migrants wades across the rio grande. they bring an elderly woman with them. upon reaching the united states, they become emotional. [crying] emotions also running high in arlington, texas, last night where the family of texas national guard soldier bishop evans spoke out for the very first time just hours after his body was recovered from the river. >> bishop has always been a caring, loving child. it was just something he could not see someone in need or hurting and not help. >> reporter: here in border patrol's del rio sector, there were more than 2000 illegal crossingsover the weekend including 67 unaccompanied children and six criminals. there have been nearly a quarter million illegal crossings here just since october. >> crossing 57 headed northbound. we have three runners. >> reporter: in due valueddy county, texas dps helicopter tracks illegal immigrants who flee across the highway after troopers found them sneaking through a private ranch. after several in the group are arrested, the helicopter guides troopers on the ground to a brushy area where thermal imaging shows the rest of the illegal immigrants are hiding. moments later, the group is arrested. mixed in with them texas dps says was this suspected mexican drug cartel member from ciudad juarez. in the rio grande valley, border patrol agents arrested these two convicted child sex predators, both mexican nationals. they also arrested two ms-13 gang members over the weekend. in the yuma, arizona, sector, border agents arrested this child sex predator from mexico, previously convicted of lewd acts with a child under the age of 14. reporting in eagle pass, texas, bill mel lugen, fox news. >> immigration drama playing out in the supreme court tuesday where justices heard oral arguments regarding the biden administration's evertz to halt enforcement. trump era policy on seeking asylum. temporary restraining order block president biden's plan to repeal title 42. let's start here on the supreme court today on remain in mexico. people who want to apply for asylum have to wait on that side of the border. that was something the biden administration got rid of. it's worked its way all the way up to the supreme court. nbc news reporting on it today. the supreme court hinted it might let biden's policy remain in place. it's a provision that allows immigration authorities to release people into the united states while their asylum claims are evaluated when that would provide a significant public benefits. "why is that wrong?" he asks. same question to you. >> well, it's wrong because it essentially is incentivizing for people to come here illegally. the federal statue -- statute, there's a presumption they shall be detained. what we argued essentially is that if you're not going to make people have them make the asylum claims in mexico, then they have shall be detained and have to be detained while the claims are pending. what the biden administration has done with the interim and permanent guidances, they're essentially allowing millions of people to enter into our country illegally and just being released into our community. i argue that's not only illegal but incentivizing people to come here illegally. that's why we're seeing record numbers of people entering our country illegally. >> shannon: texas tribune reports on human rights groups who say it's very dangerous to make people go back into mexico and wait there. the new york-based organization recorded 1,544 cases of killings, rapes and kidnappings of migrants who were forced to remain in mexico between the launch of this policy in january 2019 and january 2021 when the biden administration suspended that policy. how do you answer those concerns about the threats people will face if they wait on that side of the border versus this one? >> it is a terrible tragedy when anyone is being exploited by the cartels, but make no mistake about this, shannon, the people responsible for this are the biden administration and the cartels that are profiting off exploiting human beings. you know, we start getting blind to these numbers but let us not forget more than 100,000 people last year just here in the united states died of opioid and fentanyl-related deaths. we've seen more crime in our inner cities. we seeing a huge spike here in arizona, but throughout the country of people that are dying as a result of the cartel violence and the drug that are flowing into our country. i would say the biden administration should be more worried about american taxpayers and protecting the united states than they are with what is going on in central america or mexico. it's as simple as that. we need to put american taxpayers above people coming from central america, from countries like guatemala or honduras. >> jen sake today at the white house did a -- psaki today at the white house did a briefing that they want to work to get people here. we seem to have the same problems. why is there an inability to get anything done on this issue. it ends up with real human lives being exploited in the process in the mess on the border. >> i'm a first-generation american. my parents fled communism. this is the greatest country in the world because we have a rule of law. we can't unilaterally let any person essentially rewrite our immigration laws and decriminalize and incentivize people coming here illegally. that's the problem. the very reason why people want to come here is because the rule of law means something and the biden administration is essentially gutting that. the real problem comes back to you have this permanent class in washington d.c. washington d.c. when the democrats control congress, it's bad enough and dangerous for americans but when you have an incompetent president that have people that are taking in his earpiece that are far leftist, they don't care about the hard-working tax paying americans. americans are paying the price for that now. >> shannon: let me quickly ask you about title 42 supposedly going away in may. it's the pandemic era -- it's older than that but used in the pandemic to turn people away because of concerns about covid. there were hundreds of thousands of people if the last calculation is correct that i read on that. the dhs secretary came out with the memo saying we have a plan to did deal with what could happen after title 42. dps wants to increase resources including transportation and medical support and facilities to support border operations including an increased over 600 law enforcement personnel and agents from other government agencies to assist u.s. customs and border protection says two things to me they acknowledge it's going to happen but they do have a plan. how do you feel about that? >> well, it's a plan for failure. it's a plan for systematically harming americans -- american citizens american taxpayers. the reality is whether it's their failure to build the border wall, which we sued them over, or whether it's the public charge rule which i personally argued in the u.s. supreme court in february which provides government benefits to noncitizens, the biden administration is systematically rewriting on their own our immigration laws. they've as i have said decriminalized and incentivized people coming here illegally. they can say whatever they want, jen pskai could spin this all she wants but the reality is they created a catastrophe on the southern border. arizona is not only paying the price but taxpayers throughout this country are being effected. our communities are more dangerous. there's more drugs flowing into our neighborhoods which is killing our daughters, sons, nieces and nephews. >> shannon: it sounds like there's bipartisan worry growing in council to the white house about this. we'll see what comes in may. mark brnovich, arizona attorney general, thank you for your time. >> thank you, shannon. >> shannon: still to come, what if you pay someone to get your work done?
