before christmas is vast, extensive and heartbreaking. the suspected tornado destroyed a nursing home in arkansas, killed one person there, then trapped 20 others at that facility as you can see just collapsed around them. meanwhile, up north illinois was also hit hard. search and rescue crews combing through rubble at an amazon warehouse in edwardsville which was partially collapsed by the tornado, almost completely, as you can see there. that roof just i destroyed, no walls. devastation everywhere, at least two people killed. but kentucky may have gotten the worst of it. the city of mayfield in the southwestern part of the state basically flattinged, destroyed. emergency teams addressing and assessing the damage there as the rescue and recovery operation. this may be the deadliest tornado outbreak in the state's history. complete coverage, let's begin with charles watson who's in atlanta. charles? >> reporter: hi, eric. dozens are areed■ç dead and more than 330,000 customers from texas to indiana are without power after a severe line of storms carved out a deadly path of destruction through the south and midwest. the city of mayfield, kentucky, one of the hardest hit. drone video shows downed power lines, flipped-over vehicles and buildingsen pancaked to the ground for blocks. overnight first responders worked frantically to rescue more than 110 workers who were trapped inside this candle factory after a suspected tornado slammed into the building causing the roof to collapse. kentucky's governor says many of those workers are feared dead. meantime, at least one resident says she has something to be thankful for amid the destruction. >> the part that actually makes you feel good is the part that it didn't hit the house, but it's really bad because it's destroyed everything we've got over here. >> reporter: and tennessee at least 3 people are confirmed dead after a line of severe weather ripped through a small town leaving homes and vehicles in a pile of wood and twisted metal n. illinois crews continue sifting through■ç the debris at this amazon warehouse in edwardsville just 25 miles east of st. louis. officials say at least one person was killed and at least two others injured when severe weather sheered off the building's roof and a wall9 -- and the wall the length of a football field collapsed. between 50-100 workers were believed to be inside at the time, and officials confirm at least one person was killed in arkansas at a nursing home after a tornado, suspected tornado ripped through that nursing home, eric. eric: all right, charles, thanks so much. arthel? arthel: well, eric, in kentucky governor andy bashir declaring a state of emergency saying he fears at least 70 people are dead after a single tornado tore across more than 200 miles in the western part of the state. some of the worst damage at a candle factory in mayfield. 110 people were inside as the twister hit and the roof collapsed. the governor estimates dozens were killed at that site alone. steve harrigan is live in mayfield now with more. steve in. >>■ç reporter: arthel, this is where the candle factory was, right behind me here. at peak efficiency 250 people working there. overnight more than 100, roughly 110 people working overtime late at night trying to make some extra money for the holidays. and as you can see from the movement, this has gone really from a rescue operation to more of a recovery operation. the cranes are idle right now, a lot of first responders standing around. didn't have that frenetic activity that we saw earlier on. the last successful rescue was about 3 a.m. since then we've been watching a body truck for cadavers here with the coroner's cree here really with a yellow legal pad just taking names out on the list there. this becomes more of a recovery operation. this might be the most intense point here from these storms when you talk about concentration of death. but when you drive in here and you drive in through the heart of mayfield, if you pan over there a little bit, you start out a few miles from the town and you see, okay, some trees are down. then you■ç get a little closer d some roofs are down, and then you come into the town itself, and ordinary ally tornadoes are -- ordinarily tornadoes might take out one house but not another. this storm was not specific. there are entire blocks, buildings, houses, government offices that are just simply gone in this town of 10,000. we're seeing a lot of heavy equipment continue to move in, national guard is here, rescue operations are still continuing. but really there's the sense here even with people who have seen a lot of tornadoes, this is something different. the scale of destruction even for veterans is something they just have not seen before. arthel? arthel: and, steve, of course you've got rescue crews there. want the know how -- wanted to know how close can family get to that scene as they are justly waiting for -- desperately waiting for news about their loved ones? >> reporter: it's really changed over the course of the day. in the early morning hours, some of the rescuers were actually family members, people looking for loved ones. later on as first responders set up a perimeter, it was mainly■ç people looking or hoping to find out news about family members. but this entire landscape is changed so dramatically, it's really been scrape or turned upside down. when you look at some of the trees around here, you can see parts of an automobile in one tree, participants of a building in another tree. it's really been shaken, and i think when people just look around, it's very disorienting in addition to the grief and the fear that people are feeling. arthel: yeah. got to turn them upside down on so many levels. steve harrigan, thank you very much. eric? eric: there is a likelihood of more severe weather as the storm system moves east. let's go to meteorologist amy freeze who joins us with more on what happened last night and what we can expect for the weekend. amy, they talk about, you know, 200-plus mile swath of these tornadoes. they think it could be a record, outpacing the 1925 tornadoes. amy: yes. in fact, this is historic already, and it could overtake some of those history book, historic storms that we've seep over the years. rare to have it happen in december. a lot of those■ç storms are durg the spring, this is in december. it was a wild one last night, pretty traumatizing and terrifying to have this happen at night. you take a look at the line, it is diminishing as it moves towards the east coast, but this is the same line and still has the capacity to bring big winds. that will be over washington, philly and even d.c. in the evening, so heads up, east coast. we're also looking at the storms on the south end of this potentially bringing rain and wednesday through the evening hours. there's a maul risk of tornadoes tonight -- small risk of tornadoes on the east coast, but it's not what it was for other areas. the potential storm here tonight, people just need to have notifications ready to go, and if you get one fired up, take cover. more than 400 reports have come in, and it has turned destructive and deadly in many areas. keep in mind that you to don't get to put a nice measuring stick out there to get the grasp of what these winds will do. we have to go back and assess the damage, and that's what the national weather service will be doing all over the country. one example, eric, many small towns in america■ç have large water towers some of them are 100 feet, 120 feet n. mayfield, kentucky, they had a tower over 100 feet with 500,000 of water in it, it was crumbled like a dixie cup last night, and that's just one visual. eric: the power and destruction and nature of these storms and tornadoes just almost unimaginable. so sering. we see that in the pictures that are coming out of there. amy, thank you. and speaking of mayfield, kentucky, let's go back to mayfield. that is a city that has been largely destroyed. as you can see, block after block blown apart. it is the site of that horrible destruction of the candle factory. it is the mayfield consumers product company, 110 people or so working overtime for the holidays there when the tornado hit. upwards of 70 people perhaps feared kill in the collapse -- killed in the collapse of that company while they were working. one mayfield resident is joining us now. he owns a landscaping company and is helping with the cleanup and also doing welfare checks, offering to help check on people in his■ç devastated town. ryan mitch chum joins us from your truck. ryan, thank you. glad you're with us. our hearts, sympathies and prayers with the people of your family. bring us back to last night. where were you, what was it like? >> me and my girlfriend, we was at our home, and it was something i couldn't even explain. thankfully, the storm was a little bit to the north of us. of course, it was still crazy. it's just something you would think would come out of the movies, just the sounds that we heard. me and my mom, we love watching storms. when my mom called me and told me don't go outside, she was leaving the house to go to a basement at her friend's house, i knew that it was pretty serious. eric: and, ryan, we see these pictures, and when you're there on the ground, what is it like to see your town so horribly devastated? >> >> it looks like somebody dropped a nuclear bomb on it. like i said, it's something that you would think came out of a movie scene. just words can't really describe it. it's just devastating. eric: and you were fóing door to door, you've been doing welfare checks. tell the viewers how they can help. >> well, we got up early this morning and we was just going around seeing if anybody needed help. i had a video go viral, so i a had a lot of people out of town calling me or texting me, asking me to check on certain residents to see if their love ones were there which, unfortunately, a lot of them homes were not even still standing. but the main thing we need to do right now is, i know, the united way is starting a gofundme. west kentucky star has a place that they can pay and also wpsv, local 6 has a way you can donate money. and the main thing if you're not out there work, just to stay out of down can town mayfield because this is a lot of traffic for people that's trying to get everything clean up and debris out of the way. eric: united way and other folks, ryan's townsfolk and residents, they need help in mayfield, folks. >> [inaudible] just■2hope for the best. that's about all we can do. eric: hope for the best as we see and witness and you undergo the worst. ryan, the president about to speak. thank you. arthel? arthel: yeah. eric, we are told that president biden's moments away from addressing the nation about those deadly storms and tornadoes, so right now we take a pause so our fox affiliates can join our coverage. okay. and what we're going to do is our fox station will join us momentarily, but the president is going to offer words about what he's going to offer in terms of federal assistance as well as he is going to be consoler in chief. let's pause for our stations to join. and hello, everyone. this is fox news coverage of president biden's remarks on those deadly storms that hit our heartland last night. i'm arthel neville, fox news headquarters here, alongside eric shawn. president biden is going to be addressing the nation momentarily. we're expecting him to give us some details in terms of the federal assistance■ç that he is going to offer the folks there in the heartland who are in desperate need of help from the federal government. and is, as he is so adept at doing, the president will also offer his con doll senses -- condolences as consoler in chief. he is in wilmington, delaware, which is where spends his weekends. that is where he's going to be addressing the nation from there. we do have david spunt, our white house reporter, standing by. he is at the white house covering this as well and, david, i'm not sure if you can hear me, but have you gotten any information in terms of what the president may be saying today? >> reporter: hi, arthel. we know that president biden will likely be discussing approving the emergency disaster deck la that he a-- declaration that he approve on the request of the governor from kentucky. the president in wilmington, delaware, for the weekend, but he made this trip over to downtown wilmington to speak about this devastation. we also know, arthel, that he was on the phone -- here is the president right now. >> --■ç late on saturday afternoon, but i want to provide to an update on the deadly and devastating tornadoes that have moved across several states in the central united states including touching down across 227 miles of kentucky alone. i'm monitoring the situation very closely since early this morning. this is likely to be one of the largest tornado outbreaks in our history. earlier today i called the governors of the states that have experienced severe impacts of the storm including arkansas, illinois, kentucky, missouri as well as tennessee. i also spoke with minority leader mitch mcconnell of kentucky. the governor and i started off the morning together, and he said -- i was watching on television while talking to him like all of you have, and his comment was it looks like a war zone but worse. jill and i pray, i sincerely mean this, pray for those who have lost loved ones and for those who are uncertain of the fate of their loved ones in the debris that you see scattered all over the hurricanes' path. they lost their■ç homes, they lt their businesses, and it's a tragedy. it's a tragedy, and we still don't know how many lives are lost or the full extent of the damage. but i want to emphasize what i told all the governors, the federal government will do everything, everything it can possibly do to help. i have spoken several times today with the head of fema, the federal emergency management if agency, as well as the director of fema who's already been deployed, already deployed emergency response personnel to these states, search and rescue teams, water and other supplies. and fema's on the ground working with each of the states to assess the damages and focus on federal support where it is needed most and how we can get it there most rapidly. i also and apparently it's just been announced, but i also approved the emergency declaration that was requested a couple of hours ago by governor bashir of kentucky. that's going to accelerate federal emergency assistance for kentucky right now when it's urgently needed, and i stand ready to do the same for the governors of other states, and i've made it clear i will if they request emergency■ç declarations. i've also requested fema offer additional federal resources including temporary housing where homes have been wiped out or too badly damaged to live in. and i also asked the fema director to let the states know what they may not be aware of what they may be entitled to, because they don't necessarily know all that's available from the federal end. we're going to continue receive, i personally am receiving regular updates, and my staff is continuing to reach out to the mayors, the county officials and other local leaders affected by the tornadoes. and my heart goes out -- i was told earlier this morning that one of the equivalent of a county executive, one of the folks in kentucky was lost in this tornado. i want folks in all these states to know we're going to get through this, we're going to get through this together, and the federal government is not going to walk away. this is one of those times when we aren't democrats or republicans. sounds like hyperbole, but it's real. we're all americans. we stand together as the united states of america. and so i say to all the victims, you're in our prayers. and all those first responders, emergency personnel and everyonç helping their fellow americans that this is the right thing to do at the right time, and we're going to get through this. i'll be happy to take a question or two if you have any about this. >> does this say anything about climate change? conclude that the storms -- [inaudible] >> well, all that i know is that the intensity of the weather across the board has some impact as a consequence of the warming of the planet. and the climate change. the specific impact on these specific storms, i can't say at this point. i'm going to be asking the epa and others to take a look at that. but the fact is that we all know everything is more intense when the climate is warming. everything. and, obviously, it has some impact here. but i can't give you a quantitative read on that. >> mr. president, do you have plans to visit any of the affected lawyers? >> yes, i do. -- areas. >> yes, i do. i started off this morning with the governor of kentucky and offered to, i said i'd be happy to come, but i don't want to be in the way. when a president shows up, he shows up■ç with an awful lot of personnel. , an awful lot of vehicles, an awful lot of -- we can get in the way unintentionally. and so what i'm working with the governor of and others who may want me to be there is make sure that we are value added at a time and we're not going to get in the way of the rescue and recovery. but i do plan on going. [inaudible conversations] >> -- ask congress to approve any other disaster relief money this. >> >> well, we'll see. whatever is needed i'm going to ask for. if we don't already have the wherewithal to take care of it, i'm going to ask for it. this is the united states of america. our citizens are badly, badly hurt, and they're scared to death right now in terms of all those folks they can't figure where they are. where's my son, my daughter, my husband, my wife, my mom, my dad. it's devastating. you had a question, sir. >> [inaudible] >> the answer is, yes, if in fact the states conclude they need it. and so the national guard has been called out in one state, but whatever is needed. it's within the authority of the president of the united states and the federal government to provide that help. and■ç we're going to provide whatever is needed. i think we've demonstrated since we've been elected that every major national disaster we have been -- natural disaster we have been there early, often and stayed until we got it finished, and that's what we're going to do here. but again, i think what i've found as i've visited these disaster areas in other circumstances whether it was hurricane in louisiana or the gigantic flooding in the northeast or the wildfires in the west is the real anxiety right now is all those poor people are wondering where is my loved one. where are they? are they going to be okay? and i don't think it's possible to exaggerate the extent of the fear and the concern. and we have a lot of people that are going in doing rescue, running machines, bulldozers, forklifts and the like, and the way in which i watched it down when the building collapsed in florida, i watched how, how it takes a price, a toll on them. god, am i going to, am i going to lift something that's going■ç to move something? that -- my heart aches for those people right now including the rescuers. including the burden on them and what they worry about. that's what they talked to me about in florida. that's what they talked to me about afterwards. and so i just think that we just have to keep at it, we have to keep focused, and this is going to be the focus of my attention until we get this finished. [inaudible conversations] >> -- victims and their families, and can you talk at all about how -- [inaudible] prepare for such tsa in the future in. >> well, quite frankly, i think we're as prepared as any government has ever been for dealing with the disasters. now, the question is, one of the questions that's going to be raised, i'm confident, is what worry was there and was it strong enough and was it heeded. that's a question, i assume, is going to be part of the in the states -- the discussion in the statements as well as nationally. because, look, as usual you■ç ak always the best question, and you asked me about whether or not we were going to be able to, what were we going to do about it, how we're going to handle this. and part of it is acknowledging that the likely hood of -- likely hood of fewer weather catastrophes after the continue movement on dealing with global warming is just not going to happen. not going to happen. like i said, we didn't think -- and i think the best example for me has been and what struck me the most, we always had wildfires. but who in god's name thought we'd see this calendar year more territory burned to the ground, every tree, every home, every road, you know, larger than the state of new jersey? from the hudson river down to cape may? so we have to act. but the first and urgent piece here is we have to save anyone who's still alive, we have to care for them if we can get theç to hospitals, and we have to take care of all those families. i mean, look, i know you all, you're all pros.. asking the questions. imagine if your home's in the path. what do you go home to? everything's gone from that, from that baptismal photograph to the wedding picture to a picture of your old daughter in a bali. i mean -- ballet. it's profound. it's just profound. and it's -- but i promise you, whatever is needed, whatever is needed the federal government is going to find a way to supply it. thank you all so very, very much. [inaudible conversations] >> -- off the table when it comes to -- >> they never were on the table, and are you ready to send american troops into war and fight russians on the battlefield? here's the deal. look, i made it absolutely clear to■ç president putin, this is te last thing i'll say, that if he moves on ukraine, the economic consequences for his economy are going to be devastating. devastating. number one. number two, we will find it required that we'll have to send more american and nato troops into the countries where we have a sacred obligation to defend them against any attack by russia. and the impact of all of that on russia and its attitude, the rest of the world's view of russia would change markedly. they'll pay terrible price. and so it's -- and we are going to continue to provide for, we have and we continue to provide for the defense capacities for the ukrainian people. thank you so much. arthel: president biden there addressing one final question about president putin and his clear outline that he laid out for president putin if, in fact, he moves forward with any attempts to invade ukraine. before that he addressed the severe storms, thunderstorms that hit our■ç nation, those tornadoes that devastated our heartland in the middle of the night last night. emphasizeing the urgency of saving lives and the human toll such disasters take on all of this, saying that we aren't democrats or republicans, we are all americans. we stand together as the united states of america. the president started his day by making calls to the governors of arkansas, illinois, kentucky, missouri, and he also had a phone call with senate majority leader mitch mcconnell of kentucky, as you well know. ing he's also saying that the federal government would do everything possibly to help those in need. fema has already been deployed to the scene to assess damages and to find out where help is needed. we're going to continue covering this on to fox news channel, but for right now, we are going to release our fox stations. you will enjoy your programming that's now in progress. i'm arthel neville in new york for fox news. thank you. arthel: okay. so we've cleared our fox stations, now we're back here on fox news■ç channel. david spunt, you were at the white house, you were listening to the president's remarks as well, and he says that he is going to do everything in his possible -- he says he has all the authority, of course, as the president. he said that if any states wanted to request the national guard, that they would have access to it. what did you pick up from his remarks? >> reporter: arthel, thank you. for those who may have not seen the president's remarks at the top, he came out immediately and said this is not a republican issue, this is not a democratic issue, this is an american issue. and then he said this is not hyperbole. this is an issue right now that all americans are dealing with from all walks of life. as you dimensionedded, the president was -- mentioned, the president was on the phone with advisers this morning receiving a full briefing from fema. the kentucky governor requested an emergency declaration. that was turned around in just a few hours by president biden which frees up tens of millions of dollars to go to the commonwealth of kentucky to help them in their time of need. you see these pictures right now on the screen, they are devastating. president biden was also asked by aç if he of the pre would go down and visit those areas. he said that it is possible, that he may do such a thing. however, when a president travels, they carry a big footprint with them, and they tonight want to get in the way. so the -- don't want to get in the way. the president has issued an emergency declaration for the commonwealth of kentucky. expect to see similar type of action in other. surrounding states. as you mentioned, he spoke with the governors of illinois, missouri, arkansas as well. but the big thing the president came back to several times, arthel, was talking about the warming of the planet and talk about global warming and some of those potential issues there. arthel? arthel: right. he wasn't -- he didn't want to say for sure that this particular event was caused by global warming, but he did field those questions from reporters in the room there, for sure, regarding global warming. okay. david spunt, thank you very much. we'll see you again soon. eric. everybody eric arthel, one to the states that's been so hard hit, arkansas. at least two people were killed in the state. the northeastern part of the state the tore through a nursinç home. -- tornado tore through a nursing home. you can see right there the devastation. that's where fox is at that nursing home, just sering, powerful images that you see behind you. >> reporter: yeah. throughout the day they have really just continued to show themselves more and more. it looks like -- are we getting you guys? i think the signal has probably been in and out. do you guys still have me over there? eric: go ahead, hunter. >> reporter: okay, great. great. that's kind of one of the issues that we have been dealing with, is the communication being in and out throughout the day. we've been dealing with it with my crew and, of course, people in that recovery phase have also been dealing with those communication barriers. really just bringing the focus back here to the nursing home, the big barrier, of course, was relocating all of those folks that had to be evacuated. one person lost their life last night, but it really could have been much worse when you look at these■ç images. i actually have kevin and rick here, the owner and then the administrator of the nursing home here. first of all, thank you guys for taking the time today. i know you have so much going on. i think initially i just want to know, you know, you guys got a call last night from your staff that they had been directly hit by this storm. >> that's correct. >> reporter: what was your reaction? >> well, i guess the first thing you want to know is how bad and what happened and is all the building or any of the residents affected or anything like that. so it was kind of an ongoing process for a little bit to get to the, accepting where we really were with it. >> reporter: and your immediate action from what we have heard from, you know, residents and the family members of residents was to get them to safety and, ideally, get them relocated. how did that work in. >> well, the first thing we wanted to do, obviously, was make sure that we had everybody out of the building and accounted for. so we were able to accomplish that. then we started trying to find places for them to relocate. some went to the area hospitals, we were fortunate enough to place some in area■ç nursing ho, some even went home with their families, so it was a mixture of a lot of people working together to get it taken care of. >> reporter: and has everybody been relocated today? >> yes, they have. they're either in local nursing homes or in the hospital, but everyone has been relocated. >> reporter: and i think the big question especially when you look at just the sheer devastation that we've seen throughout the day as we kind of take laps around the nursing home, what's the next step?
