case brought against a cup eyal and maryland allegedly trying to sell u.s. submarine secrets. i'm john roberts in washington. sandra, great to see you. >> you just can't make that one up. i am sandra smith in new york. jonathan and diana seems like your standard suburban couple. the fbi alleges they had a secret, a plan to steal classified information on u.s. nuclear submarine technology an sell it to a foreign nation rea the couple is facing charges of betraying the atomic energy act. >> we are looking closer at the social media and learning more details about the husband and wife. fox team allegedly trying to sell u.s. secrets to listed only as country number one, who do you think would be interested in information like that? we could say may be somebody going to go up against the u.s. submarine to submarine like china or russia, but the new york times is suggesting becaus there was cooperation with the investigation, it might have been an ally. >> here's the thing. every one of these clues rakes in a different direction per china would be the most obvious beneficiary of any information about u.s. submarine technology because if we had a war with china it would be in the south china seas and. the on the other hand, as you point out, is it really going t be up to china to report to us that one of our employees is trying to pass secrets to china? that doesn't sound like china. first father not going to do it. the chinese have the most sophisticated espionage operation in the united states. i can't see them trusting some suburban guys putting secrets i a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or in a band-aid box. that doesn't sound quite right, but if it's an ally, why is he offering secrets to an ally? who even have nuclear powered submarines that this might be beneficial to or sophisticated diesel powered submarines. everything points in the wrong direction and a different direction. the bottom line as the fbi didn't catch this guy. they would not have known about this if the country that had no come forward and said hey, america, hey, fbi, you have a problem, somebody's trying to sell us secrets about you're most sophisticated submarine technology. >> we know france's upset of th united states with australia, but according to the new york times, france said it wasn't us. but the information that jonathan toebbe and diana toebb we're trying to sell was about the virginia class attack submarine which is our new most modern high-tech submarine or the information was about the nuclear propulsion system which toebbe worked on for the navy. what kind of information bonanz would that be for somebody who is a potential adversary or eve an ally of ours? >> it's a dealbreaker and any kind of a contract for this is submarine that could carry nuclear weapons, or conventiona weapons, but they key to this kind of nuclear powered submarine is they can be underwater for months, even years because it has self-sustaining energy system and it's also silent. it's the one weapon system that could attack an adversary or defend against an adversary where the adversary doesn't see it coming, doesn't hear it coming until it's too late. this is the crown jewel of american nuclear technology right there be a hit. >> you know come out when you look at the money that was involved. a grand total of $100,000 for the first two drops, that's not a lot of money if you've got th keys to the kingdom when it comes to a nuclear submarine. him wondering what this was all about. was this the beginning of what they thought would be a long lucrative relationship, or was this more about ideology? apparently the wife at least is pretty political. >> again, the clues all point i different directions. if they wanted to get rich off of it or if they had outstandin debts or if they were compromised in some way, you ca see that kind of relationship. it looked like a normal suburba trouble. two kids, not a very fancy car in the driveway, so what was their motive, and if the motive was anti- trump, well, what the were doing was anti- u.s., not anti- trump. that was putting american national security in danger, no just screwing up donald trump's chances for reelection. >> are we thinking dead drops, we think of manila envelopes, w don't think of peanut butter sandwiches. >> wheat that's again why i'm a little suspicious of the whole thing. if it was china, it would've been far more sophisticated tha that. >> it wouldn't of been universally much. may be a snickers bar. good to talk to you. >> thank you, john. >> fox news alerts. the coroner where gabby petito body was found last month, is a set to hold a news conference. we will get the full details an the final autopsy report. we spent a lot of time spending time reporting. just a moment to go off-camera was asking you have met and interviewed the parents. it this incredible dark period for their family. will they get answers? >> i believe they welford this is what we've been waiting for is the final autopsy reports. we knew the manner of death was homicide, but we are expected t hear the cause of death and mor on the timing of when she died which we'll be key as they look to tie the person they believe responsible to her murder. gabby petito's remains were found on december september 19th . the last known sighting of her was at that tex-mex restaurant in jackson on august 27th where witnesses say they saw her arguing with her fiancé and travel partner brian laundrie and he was arguing with restaurant staff that they according to patrons. remains were discovered roughly 30 miles down the road within the spread creek campground in near where a fellow travel blogger had spotted a white van in the critical timeframe of when the couple was last seen and then when brian b-17 returned to florida. investigators remain silent on every part of the case includin what could be crucial clues in that body cam footage recorded during that traffic stop in moab , utah appeared that's when they asked her about a physical altercation that was witnessed between the two of them on august 12 in moab he admitted that he hit her and grabbed her and scratched her face during the public fight while also admitting that she hit him as well. i spoke with friends who tells me in addition to the death, we should hear information on toxicology reports that there was evidence of a struggle and if there was any evidence of prior injuries before her death, bruises and cuts from injuries that would show some kind of healing. >> i was just thinking looking back at your coverage of this story, and i think one of the things that stands out, obviously the manhunt for her fiancé continues, but just the parents and how they have just blown off the investigation. they have not participated. i just wonder having met now with the parents of gabby petito , what do they think about that? what was their relationship wit that family and those parents. >> i asked them about that. i asked them if they had their numbers and their phone if they exchange christmas cards or tha can think she was living with brian laundrie's parents. that was the first phone call they made. they found it odd and they really held back when i asked them what they thought about their silence. not pleased, obviously. >> we will have that full autopsy report at to 30:00 p.m. come at a time when were dealing with a major crisis of inflation and now empty store shelves across the nation. >> you also had a heads up and early heads up that she wouldn' be running that race ago, the last time we saw oil and gas prices like what you will find at your loca pump right now according to aaa the average cost of a gallon of gasoline $3.28 a gallon up from a week ago and that is up from $1.77 for a national average in april of 2020. all of this as critics are warning the proposal from the democrats democrats tax-and-spend lien could push the sky high gas prices even further. foxbusiness anchor joins us now. this is a very very real proble because you combine that with the labor shortage, the trucker shortage, the inability to get people to get those containers off the ships, and then when sh got people in the trucks, if you're lucky enough to be able to supply those workers, it's going to cost you that much mor to transport goods. >> a year ago, we were energy independent. remember that phrase, we are energy independent we don't hav to rely on the oil sheiks or russia or et cetera, we were th next exporter of fuel in the world and there's now some question about that. also as you mentioned, a gallon of gas was $2 a gallon. i'm from new jersey. this was exactly a year ago. at think a little less then a year ago. unleaded was $2.05, and it's no what, about 328 dollars. it's unfair to go back a year because that was during the pandemic. yes, there was a slow down, but you look at the same price back in february of 2020. it was $2.35 was the national average. even if you compare it to pre- pandemic, these prices are sky high. job biden told us back in february of 2020, he said we ar going to get rid of fossil fuels . we are essentially trying to kill fossil fuels before scienc is ready. >> i remember the moment. >> but he has announced that, he's killed the pipeline, he's done a lot of things in this ne bill that they are trying to pass through congress the three and a half-$5 trillion bill where a lot of measures in thei would make it more difficult fo oil producers. we have an all out war against fossil fuels, and as a result, the price of fossil fuels is going way up. we are becoming more dependent again on the oil sheiks. >> presidents from both parties over four decades have moved to allow increased oil product and gas exports for joe biden would be the first president since th 1970s to move in the opposite direction per the way to reduce gas prices is by increasing oil supply, that means not sending policies that the administration 's goal is to put the industry out of business. now, to what we are seeing as far as the supply chain crisis and the labor shortage august job openings. rate it's a massive number. 10.4 million job openings for it's a great time to find a job as they told us yesterday, people are just not looking for them. they are not going out to do this. now there is concerns over what this means for christmas. >> supply chains are all messed up because two things, there is one thing that is legitimately you can peg on the pandemic, that is that ships are breeding grounds for covid. there was one ship that was delayed recently for two months because just one crewmember got covid. of course, two months of a dela means that 1,000 containers on that one ship or delayed. a lot of companies, the big ite companies like costco, home depot, et cetera, they are renting the ships now at our cost of about 100-0000- $2 million a month. that doesn't include the containers, 1,000 containers, you could have a couple of hundred dollars per container. that's another 1 million or two per month. smaller retailers, they can't afford to do that very they can't rent a container ship there the big companies are beginning to do it. also a problem with we shifted lot of these companies, particular toy stores and stuff shifted from toyota to vietnam. vietnam has been hit hard by delta. >> i want to bring john robertson here because we spoke to it a toy company executive o the program yesterday who had some fascinating things to say and what set out to me is he said about 85 the price goes up. that's going to be another thin that will lead to higher prices all over the place. it's great that people are thinking of moving their work here if they can find the laborers, but all the prices ar going to go up. we're going to have very big inflation problem going forward. remember when they said it was just temporary? don't believe that. >> always great to see you. thank you back to a version of normal pride they want to go back to knowing that their kids are safe at school, that they can go to their workplaces, that they don't hav to fear for their safety in communities, but he understands that. that's what is working on every single day. i would say he also recognizes that right now, getting something done for the american people come, working with members to members of congress to do exactly that, to forge a path forward to unite the democratic party is what people have elected him to do, to address the challenges were facing over the long-term pride i promise you, we don't get too glum around here even if things look challenging, our view and his view is that he was elected to continue to press forward an address the challenges the american people are facing. >> speaker pelosi said the overwhelming guidance she is getting is that members of congress want to do fewer thing well when it comes to the reconciliation package. does the president supports tha approach doing fewer things well ? >> she also gave a furlough press conference this morning where she address this, so i would point you to that. what she said in the press conference was that if there ar fewer dollars to be spent, ther are choices that need to be mad and the president agrees. that is fundamentally true of course, if it's more than $3.5 trillion, which we know it will be, than there are choices that need to be made, but the president's view is that a bill that doesn't pass means nothing changes and the challenges they challenges were facing our too urgent to do nothing, so that i why at this point what we have to do is work with a range of members who ever range of views about what should be included i a package, what is a priority t them so that we can make some fundamental changes. we are focused on the impact an that is what we're keeping our eye on. >> talks will stall without having lawmakers in washington for it. >> the good news is there are phones and presidents announcement about mandates several weeks ago coma it made clear that again, as i said earlier, requirements our problem supersede any contrarie eight or local law or ordinance. additionally, nothing in this guidance excuses noncompliance with any applicable state law o municipal ordinance. we put out the guidance several weeks ago conveying that clearly , but fundamentally, beyond the legal aspect which i unquestionable in our view, the question for any business leade is what you want to do to save more lives and your companies? how are you going to create a workforce where people feel saf to go into their workplaces? what is fundamentally in the interest of your businesses ove the long-term? we have seen from economist after economist and frankly man business leaders who have worke to implement mandates that implement these mandates create certainty, reduces the number o people out of work, and worse, and that is good ultimately for businesses, it's good for the economy, but also saving lives is something that business leaders can do by continuing to work to implement these mandates . i would note a lot of these businesses are doing them on their own >> i know you said there's goin to be but is there anything you can tell us about the state folders that the president is meeting with tomorrow, what the administration can do, is doing about some of these supply bottlenecks? >> we're taking a number of steps which i'm happy to outlin but let me focus on the ports because that is clearly what th focus will be tomorrow. one of the challenges were having is as you've all seen an shown on many of your networks and others have reported on is that the delay of goods getting through to our ports and enabling them to get to people in the country. we know that is one of the bottlenecks in the supply chain. the supply chain bottlenecks range industry to industry, but we know addressing that those bottlenecks at ports could help address what we see in many industries across the country and frankly are leading people if you're preparing for holidays , christmas, whatever they may celebrate, birthdays, to order goods in to get them t people's homes. so that is what they will focus on tomorrow is to talk about what we're going to do on ports something that has been a focus for months now and he has hired people to help address at. >> i want to talk about an earlier question she referenced the [inaudible] it seemed like she backtracked from her messag yesterday about what sort of path the democrats need to take. it seemed like she was indicating that programs fewer programs done well would be the preference in then this morning said that the first thing to go would be the timeline. so has the president given any sort of a push in either direction on this? >> this is all part of the discussion. i will let you convey or ask questions of speaker pelosi herself. as we saw this morning, she is more than capable of speaking o her own behalf. what she was conveying is that it was the preference or preference, the preference presidents preference to have the initial package proposed, what our focus now is on is building a real tangible packag that can become law in is going to make a transformational difference in peoples lives. i understand, we all know why w are talking here about the size and the cuts, et cetera. a cut, it's not a cut just because someone once proposed something bigger on paper. it's not a bill or a policy that's going to change lives, and that is what we are working through. there's a lot of ways to do tha and that is the discussion she' having with our caucus and the president of course is playing prominent role. >> he doesn't prefer one avenue or then other? gig at the president wants to make fundamental change in our economy and he feels coming out of the pandemic is exactly the time to do that. if we don't do it now, if we don't address the cost of childcare to go back to josh's question get to the suppl chain issues, is there any consideration of potentially lifting trump era tariffs to give some sort of an immediate relief to this problem? i know the task force talking about and think that as you saw by our announcements are or investor type of speech last week, we ar open to considering policies or continuing some policies if the are in the interest of the american people and the interes of our economy ultimately, what we're seeing is that and what h will be talking about tomorrow is that the ports and the ability to move goods through ports is certainly one of the big bottlenecks. that is what he'll be addressing . they're are other issues in the supply chain including manufacturing and international manufacturing hubs where the issue there is the number of people aren't showing up for work or factories that are shut down because of covid. we are still the worlds world's largest supplier of maxine's. we have seen different types of supply chain issues in some natural disasters you've had over the course of the year. and the threats to the american people to their well-being, two they're economic well-being. the supply chain has been working for months to address these issues. i know world-renowned business travel and health expert senato ted cruz has made that point, but i wouldn't say that that is widely acknowledged or echoed b business leaders who have implemented these mandates by health experts who conveyed the way to get out of the pandemic is to ensure that we are doing exactly the steps the president has announced and we are workin to implement. it doesn't mean this is hard an challenging. of course it is come over in th middle of a global pandemic. ultimately the job of the president of the united states is to lead. it's to ensure that he is protecting the lives of people across the country. i know there is a little hubbub over the course of the last few days about southwest airlines, we now know that some of those planes were absolutely false in the issues were completely unrelated to vaccine mandates. what we've seen business-to-business across the country is this is a way to sav lives, and create more tea, is something so who committed the homicide i really to be determined by law enforcement. >> i thank you for your hard work, and i always say in so many cases i've been involved in , let the pathologist and the coroner do their work no matter how long it takes so i think yo probably don't of really good job on this case. thank you for your time. >> doctor, this is rochelle wit abc action news in tampa. can you kind of walk us through the process to how you arrived at this specific manner of death ? >> in this state of wyoming there are four possibilities fo a manner of death, they are homicide, suicide, accident, an natural. those are the four choices. what we do an investigation as we look at the crime scene or o the scene of death, the scene o the body, the condition of the body, and finding findings at autopsy and toxicology. that is how we arrived at the manner of death. so it really depends on lots of different circumstances. >> stephen fabian again from "inside edition." can you tell us if the body was. when it was discovered or if th body was on the surface? >> i can't tell you that. that would be something you would have to ask the fbi, because we are not allowed to release that information. >> kelly vaughn? do you have a, kelly vaughn? we have brian nd in the chat that has a question. what is your question, brian? was there any impact on her bod from weather or wild animals in the national park? >> i'm sorry, i didn't hear the question. >> was there any impact on her body from weather or wild animals in the national park? >> all i can really comment about that is that her body was outside in the wilderness for three or four weeks. you are and muted. k sl assignment? >> hello, k sl tv in salt lake. can you tell us at all whether or not was it believed that she was murdered there at that location or is it any indicatio that her body was drugged there or taken their? can you give us any indication there? >> i can't comment on that combat that would be something you would have to talk about to the fbi. >> hello. what were the results on the toxicology reports and is there any suggestion that gabby had any drugs in her system and if so what were they? get the results of the toxicology so i can't comment about that. >> thank you. we have a question from the cha was gabby petito pregnant. >> she was not pregnant. >> my question is did you seek the advice of forensic entomologist or a forensic botanist during the course of your investigation? >> the fbi has sent materials t a forensic entomologist. w pbs 25 news. >> hi, doctor. this is terry parker from palm beach county, florida. you said you were very thorough in this autopsy and examination. could you give us an example of the type of tests and analysis that you performed? >> this autopsy included a whol body cat scan, and examination by forensic pathologist, and examination by a forensic anthropologist, and toxicology evaluation. so we pretty much covered all the bases. >> doctor, thank you for taking the question. you mentioned that strangulatio is the cause of death. can you talk about how you received, or how you came to that conclusion? >> i cannot. it is part of the autopsy findings in is not discoverable. >> was there any other cause of death that was a possibility in this case? >> we look at all possibilities when we tried to determine caus of death. but the cause of death is that we determined. >> i have a question in the chat . it is was the manner of death obvious, strangulation marks, injured neck? nana thing is obvious in a situation like this, so a detailed analysis was used to determine manner and cause of death. i can't go into details on how we made that decision. >> kristin thorne from new york great can you please repeat about how long you believe the body was out there. the last time you spoke you jus hadn't gotten a good shot of yo saying that. could you please repeat that? >> artificial determination is the body was in the wilderness for 3-4 weeks. >> thank you. jorge fitzgibbons? you have to unmute. >> sorry about that. good afternoon. relating back to the date of death, is there a date listed o the death certificate? >> the death certificate has no been completed at this time and the death certificates in the state of wyoming allow for approximate dates and there wil not be an exact date of death o the death certificate. >> eileen with news 12? >> hello, doctor. we asked a little bit, but is there a way that you can explai how you know that it was strangulation. sometimes i know that the high fight going could be missing. is this something that you discovered in this case? get a can't comment on that because it would be a finding o the autopsy in is i stated before in the state of wyoming, the autopsy results are not public knowledge. >> so than you can't clarify whether it was manual strangulation or with an item, correct? >> that is a correct. michael ruiz? >> doctor, was the entire examination conducted at your lab in jackson or was that body shifted to another facility? to get the examination done entirely and our in teton county , wyoming. >> you have been listening they are to the full autopsy report revealed from teton county, wyoming of gabby petito who jus detailed that he believes that she after she died, she was lef in the wilderness for 3-4 weeks as we learned right off the back , he ruled it a death by strangulation and her death ruled a homicide. although he did direct a lot of those questions to the fbi and the police as a matter. we got the details that so many have been waiting for for quite some time. >> he said there will likely be no exact date of death because of the fact that she was out there in the wilderness exposed for so long. >> let's bring in nancy grace who joins us by phone for it is been anticipating this for quit some time. what was your take away? >> i think that it is very significant that we are learnin the cause of death and the fact that it is a strangulation in m mind even more so implicates brian laundrie and i think when dna results are in we will find out even more. legal eagles had long thought the cause of death would either be strangulation or blunt force trauma. strangulation is often used, it's called a sweetheart murder in other words, the perpetrator is close up and intimate with the victim. we find that often in domestic homicides. >> nancy, i was going to say th idea of strangulation, particularly of young women lik this after circumstances we hav seen in other videos and other times to you, is that suggestiv of a crime of fashion? >> it's absolutely suggestive o a crime of passion part i long suspected it would be either strangulation expects the agent or blunt force trauma in a fit of rage, but here we have gabby out in the wilderness alone wit brian laundrie. we know she was contemplating leaving him because so many people had just told her to reconsider the relationship. there she is, alone with him, contemplating leaving late and statistically the single most dangerous time for a woman contemplating leaving a relationship, it that is the single most dangerous time and there she is alone. it really floors me is what it must have taken for him to leav her decomposing for three or four weeks and i'm really happy in one way or relieved as the better word that they could eve determine a cause of death due to potential exposure of gabby petito. >> and the details of what we just learned of what they do in potentially making the connection to brian laundrie in the court of law, nancy, i woul ask you referencing what a salt lake city private investigator is quoted talking about an art .com piece today saying he was not going to be surprised i it was annual strangulation or if he had choked her before prayer adhesive when he was watching that police video in utah and he described how laundry grabbed her face during that domestic disputes, he said the private investigator said any victim who has been choked before, their natural reaction is to lower their gin to their clavicle to prevent that hand going around her throat suggesting that's what he saw her do in that video. you believe that law enforcemen and lawyers are going to be abl to make any sort of connection here? >> i absolutely do believe that. it is amazing what type of dna is left behind leavitt's saliva epithelial, which is skin cells. i hope they decompose or did no ruin or compromise any of his dna if in fact it was there at all, but i can tell you this much, the fact that she was strangled, out there, and when you look at her in that body ca video from moab on august the 12th where she kept holding her hand up to her chest near her neck, it is very very disturbing . i now think that investigators, police, fbi will use extrinsic evidence such as placing brian laundrie in the vicinity of tha location near the time of death to place him they are with her. they're is no way for a jury to find someone else did this thing . through phone records, through receipts, through maps on the transit the application system, placing him they are at the approximate time of her death. they will be able to do it. >> nancy, you heard the coroner say that we may not know the exact date of death because of the state of decomposers or of the body and the amount of time the body went undiscovered so i you're looking at that theory o trying to place him in the same area at the time of her death, the coroner is suggesting that might be a difficult hill to climb. >> i have no doubt in my mind they will not be able to pinpoint a day, but if i look a the last time she is seen alive the next time he is seen alone, and those receipts of him traveling across the country, based on the time that he got home and the time that he was last seen alive, i bet you, i bet your bottom dollar we will get three or four day window of her time of death that they can place him there, in that campground, at that time, it's over. >> stephen bertolino who represents the brian laundrie family has put out a statement following the reveal of the autopsy results saying that the death at such a young age as a tragedy he writes while brian laundrie is currently charged with the unlawful use of a debi card belonging to gabby, he is only considered a person of interest in relation to the demise. at this time he is still missin and when he is located, we will address the pending fraud charg against him. your reaction, nancy? >> that's what i expect them to say. that what he's being paid to say . so i'm not surprised at all. he wants me to think about the debit card when i find out that she was strangled dead and her body left to decompose and i'm thinking about a chick-fil-a drive-through? are you kidding me? he'd like me to think about tha but right now i'm thinking abou gabby petito being strangled dead and that is plenty of time to form premeditation the time it takes to strangle someone. so now we know, this was no accident. she didn't fall down and hit he head. she didn't fall into a ravine and drown, we know she died by strangulation. we know she died of asphyxiation . she was murdered. if they can place him they are, within 70 to hours of the time she was murdered, it would be hard to pinpoint that down, but i bet you, it will be close enough for a jury. what you expect a defense attorney to say, yeah, he did it , now should i tell you where he is? >> let me come back to somethin you said a couple of minutes ag here as you are giving as your final detailed analysis and tha is that maybe whoever strangled left skin cells around the strangulation area. you say you hope that strangulation survive being out there in the elements, the fact that brian laundry is still jus a person of evidence and has no been connected with the death o gabby petito, is that a suggestion that there is not ye any kind of evidence that could tie either him or any suspect t her death? is that a suggestion that maybe that evidence you talked about does not exist? >> i liked what you said when you said not yet. you said not yet. and you are absolutely correct. not yet. but it ain't over yet. right now, there has still had got to be comparisons done and think they may have been able t do it by now, but i don't know that. what i do know is he was with her, he is alive and she is dead . the dna will be coming. do i think it survived? probably not, but if she was still closed, and i think she was, we've got a better chance of getting dna off the close. >> as far as any further detailed information, the toxicology report, he did not revealed her at he said only cause and manner of death is what he would revealed today. you believe there will be any further surprise details that come from what they hope learn since they have had her body? >> i do. they're were not surprises in i why would they keep it a secret? so right now, either they're no complete, or their withholding evidence. why? why would they withhold evidence ? yet to think reasonably. what is the likelihood that somebody else would come kill this beautiful young girl when brian laundrie is the one makin often her van with her debit card. did he think she was going to rub two sticks together out there and make dinner. think it through. throughout the likelihood that he was her man or hard drive, her computer, her belongings, used her debit card and somebod else happens along and kills her ? that doesn't even make sense. >> nancy grace, always good to talk to you and get your analysis. we look forward to more of your coverage on this. >> our prayers are with the petito family right now. this is awful for them. >> i'm sure it is. >> john, our coverage of this will continue. laura has been on the since the beginning perigee sat down with the parents of gabby petito per chi said it was heartbreaking when she spoke to them. martha will take it from here. thank you for joining us i'm sandra smith. >> the whole thing is heartbreaking. john roberts, the story starts right now. >> thank you. continuing coverage of the breaking news. i'm trace gallagher in for martha maccallum. the teton county coroners delivering his full report on the manner and cause of gabby petito's death ruling it was strangulation and her body was in the wilderness for three to four weeks before it was discovered. all as the man hunt for brian laundrie appears to be at a standstill. his lawyer releasing this statement moments ago quoting now, gabby
