>> i'm happy to get you a more fruitful run down for you if it is helpful from the department of homeland security. >> martha: that would be helpful. let's bring in former press secretary, kayleigh mcenany and president trump's former acting deputy homeland security secretary, ken cuccinelli. welcome to both of you. there's been a lot of questions about what has changed since the prior administration and how you guys handled it and what the situation is right now. here's a back and forth with representative pflueger of texas with secretary mayorkas about whether it is more secure now or then. watch this. >> the question is the border more secure now under your leadership? >> congressman, it's no less secure than it was previously. >> martha: ken, your reaction to that. >> oh, my gosh. look, mayorkas has proven that he's more willing to lie and twist the truth. you heard it there. no rationale human being including democrats that live along that border would ever say the border is more security today or even as secure as it was before this administration took over. we actually repatriated people. we stopped people from coming in the country. that has stopped. that is almost completely stopped. it's no wonder this invasion is occurring. it's because they're inviting it. >> martha: kayleigh, you've been in this position in that room. peter doocy was trying to get at what are the controls and how do you designate who goes where? as part of that question, he asked about covid testing, putting people on buses, sending them to other parts of texas, arizona, putting people on planes. he said they're allowing women who are pregnant and women that say they're pregnant and may not be obviously pregnant. they're not testing them to find out if they are because that's a cut-off for saying okay, you can go. there's this sort of bristly back and forth on why he was bringing up pregnant women when the larger context is how are you making decisions, how are you making definite assessments of these people? here they've exchange. >> if there's a big outrage about pregnant women, i'm not tracking it. >> the issue is not about pregnant women. the issue is the border open or is it closed? my understanding is that a lot of this is happening on this side. >> i think you know the answer to that question. i conveyed clearly that we're implementing our border restrictions including title 42, including making clear that people that are coming through regular migration, that this is not the time to come and they will be placed in removal proceeding. >> martha: kayleigh? >> yeah, at oxford university, i was taught that ad hoc taxes are the last defense when you don't have a factual source base answer. that's what she did to peter. she sought to turn it back on him to bring up pregnant women and make this bizarre response because she was feeling the heat and she couldn't take it. the real answer to why she did that is this. yesterday peter put her on the spot and said has joe biden ever been to the border? a brilliant question to which she looks flustered and had no answer and said check the history books. the last thing she wanted pete tore say today, have you checked the history books? the answer is biden has never been to the border. she used this to not get there and like-wise no to get to the answer. yesterday peter asked do you have the number of people released to the united states. she said i promise i'll have that answer by this afternoon. we still don't have this answer. promise made by jen psaki, promise broken. she deflected and that's what that was. >> martha: it was interesting. she said are you saying pregnant women are threatening us? it was strange. your assessment is interesting. you know, the question of the treatment of people at this border -- we'll get into this more with senator graham in just a moment, but ken cuccinelli, this is maxine waters on her assistment of what she sees in terms of the treatment of the people that are crossing into texas illegally. watch this. >> what the hell are we doing here? what we witnessed takes us back hundreds of years. what we witnessed was worse than what we witnessed in slavery. >> martha: ken cuccinelli? >> that's hyperbole without basis. the fact of the matter is, they have invited what amounts to a third world camp on the border of the united states without facilities, without care for these folks. they're illegal aliens. they shouldn't have come in the first place. every one of them should be returned to their home count trip. at the same time, this administration is letting this fester. letting it sit there. if you live in or near del rio, this is not good for you community. this is not the kind of security that you expect. that's why democrats all along the texas border are turning on this administration. because they're not being cared for. >> martha: very interesting. we're seeing some indications that latino voters are changing their minds about this administration, which is going to be interesting to watch in 2022. well, they have 25,000 more people expected to be coming up. i know they're working hard to clear out the areas. they have bulldozers to clean up the areas where people have left. i don't know what they're going to do when the rest of the people start walking across the river as we saw in this round. kayleigh, ken, great to see you. >> good to see you. >> martha: there's no more horseback border patrol because of this video and these images. the riders that you saw using their reins to hold back border crossers have been relegated to desk duty and they're under investigation despite the explanations that were given by brandon judd about the training and how -- those are divided reins and used for a specific reason in this environment. another side to the story. senator lindsey graham joins us with that next. veteran homeowners, mortgage rates are still near all time lows. and home values are at all time highs. that makes right now the best time in history to use your va refi benefit and get cash. you could take out $50,000 or more because the newday 100 va loan lets you borrow up to 100% of your home's value. use that cash to pay high rate credit card debt or plan for retirement. the newday 100 va loan. ♪♪ i thought i was managing my moderate to severe crohn's disease. then i realized something was missing... ...me. my symptoms were keeping me from being there for her. so, i talked to my doctor and learned humira is the #1 prescribed biologic for people with crohn's disease. the majority of people on humira saw significant symptom relief in as little as 4 weeks. and many achieved remission that can last. humira can lower your ability to fight infections. serious and sometimes fatal infections, including tuberculosis, and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened, as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. tell your doctor if you've been to areas where certain fungal infections are common and if you've had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flu-like symptoms or sores. don't start humira if you have an infection. be there for you, and them. ask your gastroenterologist about humira. with humira, remission is possible. ♪♪ liberty mutual customizes car insurance so you only pay for what you need. how much money can liberty mutual save you? pleaded guilty to falsifying a document. there's no indication that michael sussmann plans to do the same and plans to fight this. we're told the trial is many months away, many delays in the court system. back to you. >> martha: thanks, david. let's bring in the top republican on the house judiciary committee, ohio congressman jim jordan and the author of the book "do what you've said you would do." a lot of americans would like to see that happen. thanks very much, congressman. good to have you here. one of the fascinating things here is the way this was perpetuated through these channels of clinton operatives and journalists that kept picking up the story despite the fact that there's not a lot of connection here. this is a quote from glen greenwald. hillary and jake sullivan said that they learned about this shocking story of a connection between the trump server and this russian bank from slate when it was printed in slate. in fact, it was hillary's own lawyers and researchers that spend weeks pushing the story to the fbi and friendly journalists like ford at the atlantic. your thoughts. >> what is always the hook to get the journalists to bite. >> the hook is when there's an investigation. it's the fbi of the united states of america. steve smith started an investigation. that's a term jim comey used. jim comey implemented this same strategy when he went up in early january of 2017 when it was president-elect trump, briefs him and sticks around to talk about the dossier, which is just as bogus as this connection to the russian bank server. but when comey briefs the president-elect of united states about it, that's a news for the press to run with this. this is the game. it's interesting. the very first sentence in mr. durham's indictment,27-page indictment, the very first sentence refers to the fact that this was in the news the week before the 2016 presidential election. >> martha: this was very successfully pedalled around and now there's a lot of people in the media that have egg on their face because they ran with it. you know, they continued to stoke the fire even though there wasn't a true connection. even after, i might add, it was -- even after the i.g. report in 2019, even after that, that showed that there was no connection with this server. the trump campaign. the question -- i think about the title of your book. "do what you said you would do." we hear this stuff and makes us unhappy. nobody pays the price for it. any reason to think that this will be different? >> great question. most americans are like when is someone going to jail for the lies we were fed and the median't cos to feed them to us. it's important. klinesmith and now sussmann, both didn't like to the investigators, this is not like your false claim. these are lies that took place on the whole front of the trump russian investigation. this is not a lie. this is the lie. this is sussmann telling the lie that launched this whole thing. this whole media story and the fbi investigation. it's a different animal. that's why you have a 27-page indictment starting with the sentence that mr. durham started with. i'm encouraged by what i see from mr. durham based on this indictment. >> martha: this is sort of the nut event. sussmann goes to the fbi. i'm a citizen. i'm concerned about this connection with the trump server and the russian back. he says it's not true. i'm not working on anyone's behalf. i'm a concerned citizen. turns out, he worked for the clinton law firm. they're all behind this. he says it's not true. my question to you one more time is just, you know, where do you think this goes next? as you go through this, do you think it will go anywhere? >> i hope so. it's important to understand who susman went to. he didn't go just to anybody, he went to jim baker, the same jim baker that gave the information about the dossier, this is not the first time that mr. baker took information that we know was not accurate and sent it on to the investigative team. i'm curious what jim baker has to say about this. he has to be a witness in this case. he received the information and supposedly didn't know who sussmann was representing. >> martha: and when jim comey put the story out there so it ended up in the press. you see the circle how it works. jim jordan, thanks very much, congressman. >> thank you. >> martha: so we have breaking news just coming in outside of memphis, tennessee. the firefighters police department responding to a shooting at a kroger grocery store. reports of multiple shots. very few details about this. just really starting to come in. memphis police department says they're assisting the collierville police with securing that scene. we will keep a close eye on developments there as that story continues to unfold today. so a lot going on this afternoon. that is "the story" for us for today, thursday, september 23, 2021. the story goes on. we'll cover it with you watching us on the other side. we appreciate that. see you back here tomorrow at 3:00. "your world" starts right now at the top of the hour. have a great afternoon, everybody. >> neil: all right. does this look like a market that is worried about china or worried that over the fact that we might not have a budget or worried about the fact that we haven't addressed the debt ceiling issue or spending money hand over fist? they just don't know how much money. does this look like a performance you'd see in stocks if they were taking stock of all of that? no, it does not. but up we are nevertheless. 507 points up for the dow on top of
