been approved in the us. clinical trials showed that the pill helped to significantly reduce depressive symptoms within three days. good evening. thank you forjoining us on bbc news. the former pakistani prime minister imran khan has called on his supporters to protest peacefully, after he was found guilty on corruption charges and sentenced to three years in prison. a court in islamabad ruled that he had failed to declare income from the sale of gifts he received while in office. the verdict means he isn't allowed to hold public office for the next 5 years — pakistan is just months away from a general election. from islamabad, caroline davies reports. sirens blaring, police truck after police truck, arresting former prime minister imran khan. the judgment came from here. police filled every corner in islamabad's session court. mr khan says that the case is politically motivated. the court said he is dishonest. so this is after months and months of waiting, we now finally have an announcement. imran khan has been found guilty and has been sentenced to three years* imprisonment. outside court, shouts of, "your show is over, khan." minutes later, we heard he'd been arrested. this was what happened last time mr khan was arrested. protests, some violent. mr khan was released but his party faced a dramatic crackdown. many of his senior party leadership were arrested, then announced that they'd left the party. police picked up thousands of his supporters. will the protests happen again? imran khan's team released this pre—recorded video after he'd been arrested today. translation: iwant to make one request. you should not sit quietly at home. all my struggle is not just for myself. it is for you, for the future of your kids. if you do not stand up for your rights, you will live like a slave. outside his house, there were a small number chanting, waving flags. then quickly taken away. it's been a matter of months but the atmosphere in pakistan has changed. this decision will mean mr khan cannot run in the upcoming elections. it's pretty useful for your party, though, that your main political opponent has just been disqualified in the run—up for a general election. well, you have to be accountable for your deeds in law. this is nothing to do with politics. a person who's been proven guilty by the court has to be arrested. his lawyers intend to appeal the decision but for now, mr khan is held by police and his politicalfuture is deeply uncertain. joining us now is zulfikar bukhari who served as a special assistant to the former prime minister imran khan between 2018 and 2021. thank you forjoining us on bbc news. what is your reaction to this latest development? that is that imran khan has been handed a prison sentence. ~ , ., ., ~ ., sentence. well, it is a dark day for pakistan and _ sentence. well, it is a dark day for pakistan and democracy _ sentence. well, it is a dark day for pakistan and democracy in - sentence. well, it is a dark day for i pakistan and democracy in pakistan. however, it was writing on the wall because imran khan, for the last few weeks, has been predicting his arrest, and his disqualification. imran khan has grown in the last 12 months to be probably the most popular leader the country has ever seen, hence it was impossible to go into any kind of polls and election whilst he was in politics, hence he needed to be disqualified, which he had already guessed. that is something we have seen throughout the course of history in pakistan. it is a case which will be appealed in the high court and the supreme court, and we hope to get relief. we have heard imran khan's message, a pre—recorded one this report is. have you spoken to him? what sense do you have of how his feelings are at the moment, or his strategising? nobody has been allowed to speak to him since he's been arrested and was taken from lahore to a city. he has reached prison there. nobody has had access to him unfortunately. we hope that he is keeping well and is not given any torture while he is in prison, that is our biggest fear. you know, that is all that we have of any news of him at the moment. like we said, it was his legal team, they weren't allowed to give him any arguments, they weren't allowed to speak in court today. and so, it is obvious which intention the judge had come with, appointed under this case are the last minute to give his verdict. today was his last day before he goes on holiday. somehow, he did a 35 page verdictjudgment on imran khan's case, and thejudgment was printed within 20 minutes, and within ten minutes of that, they had stormed into imran khan's home. that means it was all preplanned from the beginning. it is impossible to get that kind of speed from the courts. the government denies this, they say that there was no political net motivation. we heard that from the minister. their argument is that he has committed a crime, the court has found him guilty, now he must be arrested. what is your response? well, you know, it is a very logical response. we have 13,000 people in prison, men, women, children, we have people have been tortured. women who have had human rights abuses going on. there is a massive crackdown on imran khan's party. so, saying it is not politically motivated just doesn't make sense when there are 200 cases on imran khan. what imran khan pledges... estate gifts given to him were stated in his 2020 and 2021 accounts under precious items. he has paid tax on them, capital gains on them, so there is absolutely nothing illegal. absolutely everyone minister has purchased these. somehow, none of the other ones who have had them legally purchased have come up in court. and imran khan has all of a sudden been on a fast track and has been expelled. once it goes to the high court, and in the supreme court, the highest court in pakistan, iam supreme court, the highest court in pakistan, i am very certain that this case will be dismissed. that is endinu. this case will be dismissed. that is pending- how _ this case will be dismissed. that is pending- how do _ this case will be dismissed. that is pending. how do you _ this case will be dismissed. that is pending. how do you see -
