of the best—selling of all time, has died at the age of 7a. the us and russia remain at a diplomatic stand—off with their military assets standing by. after months of escalating tensions, the two superpowers have been holding talks about ukraine, which nato fears is the next sovereign territory moscow wants to seize through force. remember, it's less than a decade since russia annexed crimea. russia says it's concerned nato is sending weapons and military expertise to ukraine and wants guarantees that the organisation will pull back from its borders. speaking after the talks in geneva, russia's foreign minister, sergei lavrov, said the dialogue would continue and his country had no plans to attack ukraine. russia is understood to have more than 100,000 troops currently near its border with ukraine. 0ur diplomatic correspondent james landale sent this report. more russian forces on the move, surface—to—air missiles in the country's far east, due to join what moscow says are military exercises near ukraine. part of the growing build—up of troops and equipment revealed by images of strategic locations close to the border. what western powers fear may be russian preparation for war. but for now, the diplomacy continues, too. america's and russia's top diplomats met in geneva, and at first couldn't even agree how to greet one another, with one question on everyone*s lips. is an invasion likely, as president biden suggested? mr lavrov seemed to suggest it was up to the united states and later dismissed talk of invasion as hysterical rhetoric designed to provoke ukraine. what does russia want most? an unstable, dependent ukraine? or a new sphere of influence in eastern europe? translation: we are not trying to get a sphere of influence, - but what nato is doing shows it considers ukraine to be a part of its sphere of influence. that is at the heart of moscow's fears — that ukraine, despite its historical and cultural links to russia, could become yet another former soviet country to join nato as the western alliance spreads east. and such is ukraine's strategic importance to moscow that when a pro—russian leader was driven from power in 2014, russia annexed crimea, ensuring its navy still had access to the black sea. russia also sparked an internal war in eastern ukraine, what has since become a frozen conflict between pro—russian separatists and government forces, fighting that's cost more than 13,000 lives. and now, president putin is demanding nato deny ukraine membership forever and withdraw forces from eastern europe. america's secretary of state rejected these as nonstarters and once again sought to deter any military action. we've been clear. if any russian military forces move across ukraine's border, _ that's a renewed invasion. it will be met with swift, - severe and a united response from the united states- and our partners and allies. there was no breakthrough at the talks here today, no deal to reduce the threat of war. but there was agreement for diplomacy to continue. the us will put forward ideas for more security cooperation next week. both sides will meet again after that. these are turbulent times. but for now, russia appears willing to continue talking, and western diplomats hope that might mean not fighting. james landale, bbc news, geneva. live now to texas where the fbi is giving an details and some very human and emotional responses really to the event there in your mirror because it was a british man who entered the synagogue there and took four hostages and the siege lasted 14 hours and think with the hostages were unharmed and he was shot dead by police and we learned some of the details they're starting with the fbi talking about the fact that this was notjust fbi talking about the fact that this was not just a fbi talking about the fact that this was notjust a hate crime but also an act of terrorism and that's the line that they were pursuing and this was an act of terrorism against the jewish this was an act of terrorism against thejewish community. and we also heard from local police there are some interesting detail about the fact that he was a relatively new officer who first responded to the call and a call was just to a disturbance so it was just a disturbance so it was just a disturbance to start with but that new officer quickly realised that this could be a hostage situation and acted accordingly and then we heard of course there from rabbi charlie thinking law enforcement and city officials and saying that he is standing here with gratitude just to be alive. it will keep a that press conference and if there are any more details we will bring those to you. i want to return now to our top story in that his attentions on the border with sovereignty it can never become a member of nato and so forth and i think he is trying to assemble pieces of the former russian empire that he can attach to a greater russia. he is doing this in the hundredth anniversary year of the founding of the soviet union so he is very determined. he is moving military forces and his moving forces into belarus for exercise there and it has already got over 1000 troops around the ukraine and is moving ships into the black seat can enable any ships in all of this should arrive in place by early february. so i think he is ready to go ahead and make a military move and using this opportunity for diplomacy that we saw today as i wait to fill the time and also to see whether he can gain concessions without having to use military force and if he does and is prepared to use it. jj and if he does and is prepared to use it. . . and if he does and is prepared to use it. ., , _, . ., and if he does and is prepared to use it. ., , . ., use it. if that policy serves a role but it cannot be diplomacy on its own, it has to be diplomacy on its own, it has to be backed up by strength and with that, i think need to be taking actions now to show that the cost to russia will be far too high if they go forward with such an invasion. what kind of actions with those be? what kind of actions with those be? what kind of actions with those be? what kind of actions would that be? i would apply sanctions now and offer to lift them if russia does not invade. but extortion itself is unsuitable and we will be applying those draconian stations we talked about effective immediately. i would be sending much greater amounts of armament and trainers to ukraine to make can best defend themselves and look for multinational instance on that score as well. i would put us and other allied nato forces further forward into the baltic states and poland as a deterrent and asked a statement of resolve and also shifts into the black seat. there will be able to nyssa bbc news, bye—bye. hello, there. last night was the coldest night of the winter so far in wales. we saw a lot of cloud coming into england and wales, into that cold air. slow rise in temperature, for example, here in reading — it was only about five celsius in the afternoon. some sunshine, though, in the northeast of scotlan — and here, temperatures were in double figures. all of us, though, dry, high pressure still in charge, it's been a dominant feature of the weather for the last ten days or so. there is a weak weather front approaching the far north west, and eventually that will bring a little bit of rain mainly to the highlands later on in the night. ahead of it, a lot of cloud coming in, but some breaks are likely across some southern and eastern parts of england, and for a while, in eastern scotland. so these areas will be quite chilly, there's a risk of some frost, but it's nowhere near as cold in southern parts of the uk as it was last night. we start the weekend with a lot of cloud, but probably dry for the most part — and that's the way it'll stay for the next five days, this is the rainfall accumulation, most places completely dry, rain is more likely up towards the northwest, into the highlands. and the weekend is not going to be quite as cold, still dry for most places. a lot more cloud around during this weekend, so that will limit the frost, and also the fog, as well. and we start with a lot of cloud, really, on saturday. some sunshine more, especially across some eastern areas of the uk once again. that weak weather front straddling scotland may bring a little light rain or drizzle in the west. otherwise, it's a dry day. a lot of cloud, temperatures not bad, though, for the time of year, 8—9 across england and wales, and again, double figures more widely across scotland and also northern ireland. and that's because the high is centred more to the south of the uk, and around the top of it, we've got some stronger winds, milderaircoming in from the atlantic — the really cold air, that's a long way away, actually, across some eastern parts of europe. so for the second half of the weekend, it's more of the same. could be a chilly start in places, 1—2 mist and fog patches, otherwise a lot of cloud, some sunshine now and again. probably more across eastern scotland, because we've got a stronger wind in scotland and northern ireland. but again, a lot of dry weather, and those temperatures of around 6—8 celsius pretty widely. heading into the early part of next week, and things don't change very much at all, because high pressure is still going to be in charge. away from the northwest and it will be dry, a lot of cloud around, some sunshine now and again, and decent temperatures. cloud around, some sunshine now it again decent temperatures. this is bbc world news, the headlines. us and russia held what they called *frank* talks on ukraine tension. with russian troops gathering on ukrainian of the best—selling of all time, has died at the age of 7a. the us and russia remain at a diplomatic stand—off with their military assets standing by. after months of escalating tensions, the two superpowers have been holding talks about ukraine, which nato fears is the next sovereign territory moscow wants to seize through force. remember, it's less than a decade since russia annexed crimea. russia says it's concerned nato is sending weapons and military expertise to ukraine and wants guarantees that the organisation will pull back from its borders. speaking after the talks in geneva, russia's foreign minister, sergei lavrov, said the dialogue would continue and his country had no plans to attack ukraine. russia is understood to have more than 100,000 troops currently near its border with ukraine. 0ur diplomatic correspondent james landale sent this report. more russian forces on the move, surface—to—air missiles in the country's far east, due to join what moscow says are military exercises near ukraine. part of the growing build—up of troops and equipment revealed by images of strategic locations close to the border. what western powers fear may be russian preparation for war. but for now, the diplomacy continues, too. america's and russia's top diplomats met in geneva, and at first couldn't even agree how to greet one another, with one question on everyone*s lips. is an invasion likely, as president biden suggested? mr lavrov seemed to suggest it was up to the united states and later dismissed talk of invasion as hysterical rhetoric designed to provoke ukraine. what does russia want most? an unstable, dependent ukraine? or a new sphere of influence in eastern europe? translation: we are not trying to get a sphere of influence, - but what nato is doing shows it considers ukraine to be a part of its sphere of influence. that is at the heart of moscow's fears — that ukraine, despite its historical and cultural links to russia, could become yet another former soviet country to join nato as the western alliance spreads east. and such is ukraine's strategic importance to moscow that when a pro—russian leader was driven from power in 2014, russia annexed crimea, ensuring its navy still had access to the black sea. russia also sparked an internal war in eastern ukraine, what has since become a frozen conflict between pro—russian separatists and government forces, fighting that's cost more than 13,000 lives. and now, president putin is demanding nato deny ukraine membership forever and withdraw forces from eastern europe. america's secretary of state rejected these as nonstarters and once again sought to deter any military action. we've been clear. if any russian military forces move across ukraine's border, _ that's a renewed invasion. it will be met with swift, - severe and a united response from the united states- and our partners and allies. there was no breakthrough at the talks here today, no deal to reduce the threat of war. but there was agreement for diplomacy to continue. the us will put forward ideas for more security cooperation next week. both sides will meet again after that. these are turbulent times. but for now, russia appears willing to continue talking, and western diplomats hope that might mean not fighting. james landale, bbc news, geneva. live now to texas where the fbi is giving an update on last week's siege at a synagogue in colleyville. the team working saturday morning did a phenomenaljob. they spoke to the suspect the rabbi for an hour and a half before negotiators took details and some very human and emotional responses really to the event there in your mirror because it was a british man who entered the synagogue there and took four hostages and the siege lasted 14 hours and think with the hostages were unharmed and he was shot dead by police and we learned some of the details they're starting with the fbi talking about the fact that this was notjust fbi talking about the fact that this was not just a fbi talking about the fact that this was notjust a hate crime but also an act of terrorism and that's the line that they were pursuing and this was an act of terrorism against the jewish this was an act of terrorism against thejewish community. and we also heard from local police there are some interesting detail about the fact that he was a relatively new officer who first responded to the call and a call was just to a disturbance so it was just a disturbance so it was just a disturbance to start with but that new officer quickly realised that this could be a hostage situation and acted accordingly and then we heard of course there from rabbi charlie thinking law enforcement and city officials and saying that he is standing here with gratitude just to be alive. it will keep a that press conference and if there are any more details we will bring those to you. i want to return now to our top story in that his attentions on the border with he has made very clear demands that he wantsj very clear demands that he wants essentially the west recognise that russia has a sphere of influence or read itself and ukraine does not have full sovereignty it can never become a member of nato and so forth and i think he is trying to assemble pieces of the former russian empire that he can attach to a greater russia. he is doing this in the hundredth anniversary year of the founding of the soviet union so he is very determined. he is moving military forces and his moving forces into belarus for exercise there and it has already got over 1000 troops around the ukraine and is moving ships into the black seat can enable any ships in all of this should arrive in place by early february. so i think he is ready to go ahead and make a military move and using this opportunity for diplomacy that we saw today as i wait to fill the time and also to see whether he can gain concessions without having to use military force and if he does and is prepared to use it. jj and if he does and is prepared to use it. . . and if he does and is prepared to use it. ., , _, . ., and if he does and is prepared to use it. ., , . ., use it. if that policy serves a role but it cannot be diplomacy on its own, it has to be diplomacy on its own, it has to be backed up by strength and with that, i think need to be taking actions now to show that the cost to russia will be far too high if they go forward with such an invasion. what kind of actions with those be? what kind of actions with those be? what kind of actions with those be? what kind of actions would that be? i would apply sanctions now and offer to lift them if russia does not invade. but extortion itself is unsuitable and we will be applying those draconian stations we talked about effective immediately. i would be sending much greater amounts of armament and trainers to ukraine to make can best defend themselves and look for multinational instance on that score as well. i would put us and other allied nato forces further forward into the baltic states and poland as a deterrent and asked a statement of resolve and also shifts into the black seat. there will be able to nyssa bbc news, bye—bye. hello, there. last night was the coldest night of the winter so far in wales. we saw a lot of cloud coming into england and wales, into that cold air. slow rise in temperature, for example, here in reading — it was only about five celsius in the afternoon. some sunshine, though, in the northeast of scotlan — and here, temperatures were in double figures. all of us, though, dry, high pressure still in charge, it's been a dominant feature of the weather for the last ten days or so. there is a weak weather front approaching the far north west, and eventually that will bring a little bit of rain mainly to the highlands later on in the night. ahead of it, a lot of cloud coming in, but some breaks are likely across some southern and eastern parts of england, and for a while, in eastern scotland. so these areas will be quite chilly, there's a risk of some frost, but it's nowhere near as cold in southern parts of the uk as it was last night. we start the weekend with a lot of cloud, but probably dry for the most part — and that's the way it'll stay for the next five days, this is the rainfall accumulation, most places completely dry, rain is more likely up towards the northwest, into the highlands. and the weekend is not going to be quite as cold, still dry for most places. a lot more cloud around during this weekend, so that will limit the frost, and also the fog, as well. and we start with a lot of cloud, really, on saturday. some sunshine more, especially across some eastern areas of the uk once again. that weak weather front straddling scotland may bring a little light rain or drizzle in the west. otherwise, it's a dry day. a lot of cloud, temperatures not bad, though, for the time of year, 8—9 across england and wales, and again, double figures more widely across scotland and also northern ireland. and that's because the high is centred more to the south of the uk, and around the top of it, we've got some stronger winds, milderaircoming in from the atlantic — the really cold air, that's a long way away, actually, across some eastern parts of europe. so for the second half of the weekend, it's more of the same. could be a chilly start in places, 1—2 mist and fog patches, otherwise a lot of cloud, some sunshine now and again. probably more across eastern scotland, because we've got a stronger wind in scotland and northern ireland. but again, a lot of dry weather, and those temperatures of around 6—8 celsius pretty widely. heading into the early part of next week, and things don't change very much at all, because high pressure is still going to be in charge. away from the northwest and it will be dry, a lot of cloud around, some sunshine now and again, and decent temperatures. cloud around, some sunshine now it again decent temperatures. this is bbc world news, the headlines. us and russia held what they called *frank* talks on ukraine tension. with russian troops gathering on ukrainian
