bed occupancy rates. here in nottingham, bed occupancy rates through the winter at 95%, when the target is 85, that is not a figure plucked out of thin air, there is evidence behind that as the optimum, why is that so important to try and achieve? we are one of the largest a&e the departments in the uk and we see lots of patients each day so if a patient comes in it is helpful if you have got a lower bed occupancy so you can take that patient immediately to a bed. when you have an occupancy rate of 95%, sometimes patients are waiting for beds and what we do on a daily basis is look at the figures, escalate if we need to. so we might open some additional beds to meet the demand we might explore some of the discharges with our community partners. you have to have the beds in the right place, don t you? absolutely. we have to have the beds in the right place to get the best clinical care. if you are elderly and frail, you need to go to a ward which is designed around looki ....
