you're watching a bbc news special on the crisis affecting energy prices. special on the crisis government ministers say they have to "prepare for the worst" as the uk's energy firms continue to come under pressure from soaring gas prices. in the next half hour, we'll addressing key concerns and put your questions to the experts. but, first, how did we get here? in short, gas prices have soared. this shows their ups and downs between 2016 and 2020. but look at what's happened in the last year. it'sjumped nearly four times 7 and it continues to rise. six suppliers have ceased trading since the start of september. the head of one of these firms has described the situation as "almost apocalyptic" and the future for other companies is looking bleak. among those to have gone out of business are avro energy with 580,000 customers, and green with 255,000 energy users, which ceased trading on wednesday. in total, 1.5 million households are affected by the energy firms going bust. it was just three weeks ago that stacey stotha rd switched provider to utility point energy — supposedly saving £350 a year — but now the company has gone bust. £355 saving, i was doing cartwheels around the house. when i looked on the price comparison websites on sunday, bearing in mind they have all changed quite a lot since then, the swing was looking like i was going to be paying more than £500 extra to the deal i have got. if i want a 12 month fixed rate deal, i was looking at a £900 swing of an additional payment. so, yeah, the steps i have to take are similar to last winter in terms of hot water bottles, thermal lined curtains, obviously wearing lots of layers around the house. energy uk is the trade association for the energy industry sector and insists that protecting energy customers is their number one priority. i think the message is, though, there is already a mechanism, and i know government are working at pace with industry to make sure that if they think the mechanism isn't enough, there will be something else. so the absolute priority is security of supply first for people. in the house of commons, ministers said they are preparing for the "the worst case scenario" as energy companies attempt to deal with the unprecedented rise in gas prices. our approach will be informed by the following principles — protecting customers, especially vulnerable ones, from price spikes — and the solution to this crisis will be found from the industry and the market, as is already happening, and government, i repeat, will not be bailing out failed energy companies. for the opposition, labour has accused the government of being "far too complacent" about the gas crisis. on monday, i said to the secretary of state that he was being far too complacent about the situation we are facing. events since have unfortunately borne this out. complacent about the crisis in the market, complacent about the impact on families, complacent about the cost of living crisis. let's turn now to the direct concerns facing consumers in the uk. what happens now if my energy supplier has gone out of business? and is there anythign i can do to combat rising prices? i'm joined by daniel cooke in taunton, who was a customer with avro, one of the firms that has collapsed. he has around £200 in credit with that company on his account. i'm also joined by carol lowe, who is worried about the rise in gas prices alongside the cut to universal credit next month. and we can also speak to adam scorer, ceo of national energy action. thank you all very much indeed. i just want to begin, if i may, with daniel. just tell me about what has happened to you. your supplier, avro, stopped trading. what has the last 2a a would be like? avro, stopped trading. what has the last 24 a would be like?— last 24 a would be like? absolutely horrific. thank _ last 24 a would be like? absolutely horrific. thank you _ last 24 a would be like? absolutely horrific. thank you first _ last 24 a would be like? absolutely horrific. thank you first bother -
