perpetrated against uighur muslims and other minorities in xinjiang. the evidence of this scale and the severity of these violations is now far—reaching. it paints a truly harrowing picture. if china wishes to dispute this evidence, they must allow unfettered access to the region for the un high commissionerfor human rights or another independent fact body. yesterday we played you the distressing testimony of former detainees and a guard who were held inside the camps in the north west of china. one of the victims told the bbc she was gang raped. translation: they did whatever evil their mind could think of. - and they didn�*t spare any part of my body. biting it to the extent that it was disgusting to look at. they didn�*t just rape. they were barbaric. they had bitten all over my body. the woman�*s name is tursunay — she told the bbc she was kept at this camp in a cell with 13 other women who used a bucket for a toilet. we also heard from a former inmate at another camp — who said she was forced to be complicit in the rape of young women. here�*s what else she told the bbc. translation: i worked six months| as a cleaning worker for the women. han chinese men would pay money to have their pick of the pretty young inmates. myjob is to remove their clothes completely and then handcuff them on their bed so they cannot move. it�*s estimated over a million uighurs and other muslims are detained in camps in xinjiang. china denies rights abuses — and says they are "vocational educational and training centres" to de—radicalise uighurs and other muslim minorities. it�*s called the bbc report �*lies and disinformation�*. here�*s a spokesperson for the foreign ministry translation: there is no so-called systemic sexual assault _ and abuse against women. china is a country ruled by law and our constitution guarantees and protects human rights and it is embodied in a legal system and to the government�*s work. the vocational educational and training centre and training centre strictly abide by constitutional law and guarantee the students basic rights and forbid any insult or abuse. the bbc has defended its reporting as fair and accurate — so has matthew hill, the reporter who spoke to the women. lets hearfrom him. i have spoken to several women in istanbul, in america, in holland, sweden. and i interviewed them forensically. and a consistent picture emerges from their testimony, of rape, of hair being shorn off, as they entered the camps, jewellery being ta ken. on one occasion, of 100 women being forced to watch a young woman being gang raped in one of these re—education camps and that, they say, was as a means of control. so anyone who looked away, there were repercussions for them. there is a picture of a very specific torture which involves an electric rod. and also, forcibly being told that they are putting an iud, a contraceptive, and in some cases, forced sterilisation. these allegations are very serious and the women were in tears. the emotion seemed to me to be very, very genuine. first hand accounts from inside the internment camps are extremely rare — and reaction from the international community was swift. here�*s matthew hill on what�*s been said. the international parliamentary alliance on china, over 50 parliamentarians across the world, 19 different countries have all signed this letter, which is alleging yangon residents have been out for a third night banging pots and pans amid a heavy police presence. resistance in hospitals is also continuing. many medics have either stopped work, or continued while wearing symbols of defiance to oppose the suppression of democracy. there have also been demonstrations in support of the coup. hundreds of people gathered in the capital with signs reading "national betrayers who depend on foreign countries are not wanted". while all of these demonstrations look relatively peaceful, there�*s concern that there may soon be violence. if people do take to the streets, there is of course concern that the military has very short patience with dissent and they will violently crackdown. as they have in previous years, specifically in 1988 and again in 2007. we do not want a repeat of this, but certainly people have the right to protest the fact that their elected leaders have been taken down by, right now, a constitutional coup. dozens of ousted lawmakers have also been taking action — refusing to leave a government guest house in order to hold its own parliamentary session in defiance of the military. here they are signing a pledge to "serve the people". the mps belong to the national league for democracy, led by aung san suu kyi, and are among hundreds who were confined by the military to guest houses before being told they were free to mutating. but how worried should we be? i�*m more worried than i was, it�*s incrementally scarier than where we were a month or two ago. now let�*s be be clear — what�*s happening is normal. viruses do mutate. they change all the time. the variants were expected — but they still pose a problem for a number of reasons. first — some are more transmissible studies — like this one from the lancet — show that the uk variant spreads up to 70% faster. and there�*s another concern. there is a realistic possibility that this variant may be associated with increased mortality compared to the old variant. faster spreading, potentially more deadly. then there�*s how we defend ourselves. people who�*ve been vaccinated — or had covid—19 already — have antibodies in their blood which give them protection. but it�*s possible these antibodies may not resist all variants equally. the virus seems able to evade the immune response, evade the immunity from having been previously affected and effectual again. -- it but as well as these concerns — there�*s better news too. pfizer and moderna have both announced their vaccines still work against new variants. we�*re expecting trial data from astrazeneca soon. but if that�*s now — what about the future. there are certain to be more variants. well, scientists are confident they can deal with them — for two reasons — first — vaccines can be through the weekend, that colder weather will move in for the north and the east. so, for friday, more hill snow across scotland, some rain at low levels and close to the coast. heavy downpours for northern ireland, parts of the northeast of england as well. some of these heavy showers falling on saturated ground as well, so could be a few flooding issues during the course of friday. heavy showers for parts of wales, southwest england as well, but towards the southeast, probably largely dry — up to about 10 degrees there. so, reasonably mild on friday but into the weekend, things are turning colder for all of us, and there�*ll be further snow in places, particularly towards the east on sunday. now, for saturday, we�*ve still got this weather front in the north, but it�*s tending to fizzle away, so more snow to come across the higher ground of scotland, some of that falling to lower levels later in the day. and we�*ll start to see snow falling across parts of northern england as that colder air starts to cut in from the north and the east. to the south of that, we�*re holding onto the slightly milder air, so some rain showers across parts of england and wales on saturday. but overnight, saturday night into sunday, that�*s where we�*re going to see these blue colours returning across the map, cold air moving in on a brisk, cold, easterly wind. so, we are expecting some snow on sunday. the exact position and detail of this snowfall still a bit uncertain. it could be the southeast of england, east anglia, perhaps other eastern parts of england and scotland that could
