Power was back on for all of South Dakota early Tuesday afternoon after rolling blackouts caused by unprecedented demand on the grid led to outages throughout the eastern part of the state in the morning.
As of 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the Southwest Power Pool turned power back on in parts of South Dakota and Minnesota that experienced rolling blackouts.
Power stations in eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota were being de-energized for up to an hour Tuesday morning on a rolling basis, according to East River Electric spokesman Chris Studer.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - 5:30 pm: More blackouts in the region may be coming Wednesday morning as extreme temps continue to impact power grids.
At the request of Southwest Power Pool, the City of Pierre is preparing for a potential blackout early Wednesday morning.
If requested, the blackout would last between 30 and 90 minutes with no individual property expecting to be without power for more than 60 minutes, according to the city.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO.com) About 7,000 Sioux Valley Energy customers, including 5,700 on the east side of Sioux Falls, had their power shut off as part of rolling blackouts brought on by frigid weather.
Sioux Valley energy announced the blackouts at about 7:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. They said advance notice was not possible “because of the conditions of the system.”

“The Western Area Power Administration which is the Transmission Operator for our region was directed by SPP to take an outage at 7:00 a.m. this morning of about 200 megawatts.
