Defending Champion Clemson Heads to Palmetto Intercollegiate Clemson, S.C Larry Penley’s Clemson men’s golf team heads to Aiken, SC Monday in pursuit of a second straight and fifth title in the team’s last eight appearances at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at famed Palmetto Club.    The Tigers are ranked eighth in the nation in the latest Collegiate Golf Coaches poll, the highest ranking of any team in the field and third among ACC schools. Clemson has won the tournament in 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2020, and has nine Palmetto championships overall.  Clemson has played in the event off and on since 1968.  Penley has nine of his 79 tournament championships at the Palmetto Intercollegiate.

AWC President Favors Expanded University Partnerships Over Four-Year Degree Option

    The topic today is higher education in Arizona, with our focus on Yuma and La Paz Counties.    Last week the Arizona Board of Regents announced the Arizona Innovation Alliance. It is a partnership of the state’s three public universities - Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona - to enhance public higher education across the state.    The first place the alliance will focus on to improve the retention, graduation and academic performance of traditionally underserved students is Yuma. They will be working with Arizona Western College to figure out exactly how to do it.    At the same time, this week we have news of efforts by the Arizona Legislature to expand four-year degree opportunities by allowing state community colleges to offer them. An effort that is now in the State Senate. 

Clemson Opens Season at Camp Creek Seminole Invitational

Clemson Opens Season at Camp Creek Seminole Invitational Clemson, S.C. Clemson will open its men’s golf season on Sunday, Jan. 17 at the Camp Creek Seminole Invitational at Camp Creek Golf Club in Watersound, Fla. The tournament host will be Florida State and the 10 teams competing are all from the Atlantic Coast Conference. This will be the latest opening to a Clemson season since the 1983-84 academic year, the last year the program did not compete in the fall.  The fall schedule this year was suspended by the Atlantic Coast Conference due to COVID19. However, it is the earliest beginning to the spring portion of the schedule on record, and the first time Clemson has played a tournament in the month of January since 2010.

Penley to Retire After 2021 Season

Clemson, S.C. Hall of Fame Men’s Golf Coach Larry Penley announced today that he will retire at the conclusion of the 2021 spring season. Penley has been the head coach of the Tigers since the 1983-84 academic year, with this year marking his 38th leading the program, the longest tenure by a Clemson head coach in any sport. “I can’t thank Clemson University enough for allowing me to live a dream,” said Penley. “Being part of the Clemson Golf program as a player, assistant coach and head coach since 1977 has been special to say the least. Thanks also to all of our past student-athletes and their families. It has been an honor to serve as their coach. I am proud of the way they have represented Clemson in competition and off the course when they were student-athletes and in their careers.
