TVA takes action to protect Oak Ridge power towers from crashes

Oakridger TVA has put a concrete barrier around a transmission tower and moved it further away from the road to prevent it from toppling over again and causing another power outage like the massive one last month. Most Oak Ridge residents lost power after a pickup truck with a trailer hit the TVA electrical transmission tower at the intersection of South Illinois Avenue/state Highway 62 and Union Valley Road on Jan. 22. “TVA will not lose focus on actions currently underway to address your concerns associated with this outage,” TVA President Jeff Lyash said in a letter to Oak Ridge Mayor Warren Gooch and City Manager Mark Watson.

Middleboro Planning Board continues to voice frustrations over South Coast Rail plans Daniel Schemer MIDDLEBORO  The recent 3-2 vote announcing its opposition to the rail station being built in town for South Coast Rail garnered the Planning Board a lot of attention.  At its February 16 meeting, the Board followed up on this act with a brief discussion about where to go next.  “I think it’s necessary that people understand there’s only so much we as the Board can do to try and convince authorities what actually makes sense to us  the people they’re actually supposed to be serving,” said Adam Bond, Board Chair, over the vote taken on February 2.

City officials strongly urge citizens to conduct their business over the phone and by mail whenever possible, a city news release from City Manager Mark Watson stated. The city of Oak Ridge is supporting the “Tennessee Pledge” efforts by the state government. Refer to State of Tennessee websites for updates and advice on precautions to be taken by particular businesses. City facilities will continue to be operated as below. The release said the precautions allow for the safety of employees and “social distancing” for customers. Visitors may receive a temperature scan and inquiry about their current health. Call the city manager’s office or department offices on the city’s website for further information.
