Assam assembly passes Bill to abolish all government-run Madrassas, Opposition to move court
The Assam Legislative Assembly has approved the Bill to abolish all government-run Madrassas in the state and convert them to general schools. The move has drawn strong opposition by the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

Amid walkout by the Opposition, the Assam Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed the repeal provincialisation of Madrassa Bill, 2020 to abolish all government-run Madrassas in the state and convert them to general schools.

The three-day winter session of the Assam Assembly commenced on Monday, following Covid-19 protocols. Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he will introduce a bill to repeal provincialisation of Madrassas. Today I shall introduce a Bill to repeal Provincialisation of Madrassa. Once the Bill is passed, the practice of running Madrassa by the Government in Assam will come to an end, a practice which was started by Muslim League govt in pre-Independence Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted.

As the winter session of the Assam Assembly began on Monday, Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tabled a bill to repeal the provincialisation of Madrassa in the state. We ve introduced a Bill whereby all Madrassas will be converted into institutes of general education and no Madrassa will be established by the government in the future. We re happy to introduce this Bill to bring truly secular curriculum in the education system, news agency ANI quoted Himanta Biswa Sarma as saying.
