The Supreme Court restrained the CBI from taking immediate action against West Bengal government officials in a case related to alleged illegal recruitment by the state s School Service Commission. While refusing to stay the Calcutta High Court s decision to cancel about 24,000 appointments made in 2016, the SC emphasized the need to identify beneficiaries of the fraud. The bench called the appointment of individuals not on the panel a "complete fraud." The matter is scheduled for further hearing next Monday.
The West Bengal government will pay salaries to 25,753 teachers and non-teaching staff in state-sponsored schools in April after appointments were cancelled by a Calcutta High Court order. The state government is also considering paying salaries until the Supreme Court s verdict. The court declared the selection process "null and void" and ordered those appointed outside vacancies and those who submitted blank OMR sheets to return their remunerations and benefits.
