Divers start historic clean-up effort at Lake Tahoe

Laney Griffo/ Tahoe Daily Tribune STATELINE, Nev. At 10:30 a.m. on a perfect Friday morning at Tahoe, divers waded into the lake to start an historic clean-up effort. On Friday, May 14, Colin West, founder of Clean Up the Lake briefed crews before they started their dive into the lake’s 50-degree water from the shore of Edgewood Tahoe. The effort to circumvent the lake’s 72-mile shoreline, cleaning up trash along the way, was delayed last summer due to COVID-19. “We made it through the pandemic and we survived,” West said to the crews. Three kayaks, two jet skies and three boats accompanied the nine divers.

Former Lake Tahoe Casino Sold to Healthcare Group, Demolition Planned

The Lakeside Inn and Casino on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore in Stateline, Nv., has been sold. The Lakeside Inn and Casino never reopened following Nevada’s order to cease operations last year because of the pandemic. The resort has been sold to Barton Health, which plans to demolish and reutilize the property. (Image: Tahoe Daily Tribune) A victim of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lakeside Inn announced its permanent closure in April of 2020. The announcement came less than a month after Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) ordered all commercial casinos in the state to temporarily shutter operations. Lakeside’s ownership group cited its business being denied a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan from the federal government. Congress and the Small Business Association later amended its PPP regulations to allow gaming operators to participate. But it came too late for Lakeside and its 218 employees.

Success of South Tahoe traffic program depends on apps, drivers

Bill Rozak / Tahoe Daily Tribune SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. The success of El Dorado County’s new turn restriction pilot programs hinges on the cooperation of way-finding apps. The pilot program will prohibit right-hand turns from 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sundays and on holidays in two locations from North Upper Truckee Road to Westbound U.S. Highway 50 and from Sawmill Road to Westbound U.S Highway 50. “The big goal is for the way-finding apps to not direct people to go through residential communities,” said Rafael Martinez, Director of the El Dorado County Department of Transportation. The county sent letters to way-finding companies, informing them of the changes. California Highway Patrol is backing the county’s decision, which provides more incentive for the apps to change routes.
