COVID-19: 41 new cases confirmed in Northumberland County

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is reporting 41 new cases of COVID-19. The jump is the combined tally over the last three days with no data being provided on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The number of active cases for the health unit has increased to 92, which includes 63 in Northumberland County, 22 in the Kawarthas, and seven in Haliburton County. Outbreaks are currently active at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School and Golden Plough Lodge.

In a media release issued on Wednesday night, the County says an employee at the long-term care home has tested positive for the virus. As a result, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (HKPR) District Health Unit has declared an outbreak at the facility. (Under Ministry guidelines, any facility with at least one positive case, is considered to be in an outbreak, once the test result is confirmed.) Administrator Bill Detlor confirms that more than 95 per cent of the long-term care home’s residents are fully-vaccinated against the virus. He adds that all staff who wished to be vaccinated, have also received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Detlor says that the employee who tested positive, is now at home in self-isolation, adding that all COVID-19 outbreak management protocols are currently in-effect at the facility.

The outbreak was first declared on Jan. 16 with one staff member testing positive, and was extended after two more staff members tested positive. The Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit let the Golden Plough Lodge the outbreak was officially over to end the week, and without any residents contracting the virus. Administrator of the Golden Plough Lodge, Bill Detlor, says this is great news, especially following the first doses of vaccines being administered into the arms of residents earlier this month. Detlor adds that the threat of COVID-19 has not diminished, meaning staff will continue to wear all necessary PPE, continue to be tested weekly and they, along with residents, will be screened twice a day.
