And that’s great news for the Melrose High School winter sports coaches and athletes. Games are underway. Tryouts for the Red Raiders began on Dec. 14, and games started on Jan. 2, with the boys’ basketball and girls’ basketball teams picking up wins over Stoneham, the Stoneham-Melrose girls’ hockey team beating Winchester and the boys’ hockey team racing back to a 4-4 tie with Stoneham. Gymnastics is also looking forward to its season. The Middlesex League is limiting the winter season to 10 contests, with a chance of a small league tournament at the end of the season, according to Melrose athletic director Stephen Fogarty.

It’s welcome news for a high school athletic community that’s been shut down due to COVID-19 since March. “I’m so excited to start the season,” said Molly Waitt, who is in her second season coaching the Medford girls’ basketball team. “Although the year looks different, it will allow us to support and grow our program and the skills of our players.” December will be all about tryouts and practices. Medford teams will be busy on the basketball courts, hockey rinks and swimming pools this winter. Other winter sports were pushed into the “Fall 2” season or the late February through April timeframe.
