Mental health talk with leading psychologist May 8, 2021 AS part of their popular spring calendar of virtual events, Ennis Mental Health Association (EMHA) will present a “not-to-be-missed” evening of conversation on Thursday, May 13 with the renowned Dr Tony Bates discussing “Why Talking Helps”. A regular contributor to Brendan O’Connor’s RTÉ Radio1 programme, Dr Tony Bates is a Clinical Psychologist, who was Head of Psychology for 30 years in St James’s Hospital Dublin, and who established and directed the MSc Cognitive Psychotherapy in TCD until 2006. He founded Jigsaw, The National Centre for Youth Mental Health, in 2006 to serve young people and their mental health needs, and he was made honorary Professor of Psychology in UCD last September as a tribute to his contribution to the field. According to spokesperson for EMHA “As a high level of interest for this event is anticipated, early booking is advised”.

This past year has been a very strange experience for everyone, and young people have faced serious disruption to school and lack of social interaction. As a result UCD School of Psychology are running a series of free webinars for parents and teachers to help them help young people and improve their understanding of their mental health challenges. Monday, 26 April 7pm-8pm: Promoting positive mental health in young people . This talk will be given by Professor Eilis Hennessy, Developmental Psychologist from the School of Psychology University College Dublin.

Saint Catherine s vaccine volunteers invaluable in fight against virus

VACCINE volunteers from a North Yorkshire hospice have been doing invaluable work in the battle against the Covid-19 virus. Around 150 volunteers have been working in shifts at the Rugby Club in Scarborough, which is currently being used as a Covid vaccination centre by eight Scarborough and Filey GP practices. With up to 2,000 people a day receiving their vaccinations at the site, members of the Saint Catherine’s Hospice volunteer programme have been acting as marshals to support the clinical staff – and the partnership is going extremely well . Central Healthcare’s Matt Hudson, vaccination centre duty manager, said: “Having the volunteers here is invaluable. They really helping to take the pressure off NHS services.
