Tuberculosis in Irish prisons: New study recommends increased testing

 E-Mail Investigators from Trinity College Dublin, the Irish Mycobacteria Reference Laboratory, St James s Hospital, and the Department of Public Health HSE East believe tuberculosis (TB) care in Irish Prisons should be supported, considering the findings of their study which is published today (Tuesday, 1st June, 2021) in the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease. The study describes an investigation into a large outbreak of tuberculosis which occurred in an Irish prison in 2011. This resulted in 34 people contracting active TB from a single infectious case. The use of Whole Genome Sequencing enabled the investigators to track the course of onward transmission, and to link TB cases identified as recently as 2019 to the 2011 outbreak.

Mental health talk with leading psychologist May 8, 2021 AS part of their popular spring calendar of virtual events, Ennis Mental Health Association (EMHA) will present a “not-to-be-missed” evening of conversation on Thursday, May 13 with the renowned Dr Tony Bates discussing “Why Talking Helps”. A regular contributor to Brendan O’Connor’s RTÉ Radio1 programme, Dr Tony Bates is a Clinical Psychologist, who was Head of Psychology for 30 years in St James’s Hospital Dublin, and who established and directed the MSc Cognitive Psychotherapy in TCD until 2006. He founded Jigsaw, The National Centre for Youth Mental Health, in 2006 to serve young people and their mental health needs, and he was made honorary Professor of Psychology in UCD last September as a tribute to his contribution to the field. According to spokesperson for EMHA “As a high level of interest for this event is anticipated, early booking is advised”.
