SPRINGFIELD A former Springfield police officer was found guilty of two counts of sexually abusing a child and two more counts of intimidating a witness in his second Hampden Superior Court trial Friday afternoon. But Daniel Cintron was found not guilty of 17 other charges in the bench trial, and saw two more charges dismissed by the court.

SPRINGFIELD The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against the Hampden district attorney’s office over what the advocacy group characterizes as a failure to investigate allegations of excessive force by the Springfield Police Department.
The 353-page complaint petitions the Supreme Judicial Court to force a closer examination of accusations leveled in a U.S. Department of Justice report made public in July.
In the report, federal investigators concluded members of the department’s narcotics unit routinely resorted to punching suspects in the head and neck and filed shoddy reports over physical altercations, if they filed any at all.

HOLYOKE Police seized a kilogram of cocaine and arrested a 42-year-old man after raiding his home and an auto repair and sales business following an investigation into suspected drug trafficking.
Abner Alejandro, 42, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with trafficking cocaine over 200 grams and conspiracy to violate drug laws. He is expected to be arraigned in Holyoke District Court Wednesday afternoon.
Man killed in Holyoke crash believed to be 18-year-old West Springfield resident, officials say

HOLYOKE A driver killed late Sunday night in fiery crash on County Road is believed to be an 18-year-old West Springfield resident, according to the Hampden district attorney’s office.
James Leydon, communications director for Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni, said officials are still trying to confirm the victim’s identity before disclosing their name.
The driver died at the scene the crash on County Road, near Bluemer Road and Camp Jahn Road.
Police and firefighters responded to the scene at 10:30 p.m. The vehicle struck a utility pole and took down electrical wires.
