Agri podcast: Rice imports to SA increase - Agbiz

This is according to Wandile Sihlobo, Chief Economist at the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa, Agbiz. Sihlobo explains that the International Grains Council forecasts South Africa s 2021 rice imports at 1.1 million tonnes, which is a 5% increase from the previous year. He says the imports are usually evenly spread across the year, with a slight peak in volumes in the last quarter of each year. About 70% of South Africa s rice is usually imported from Thailand, with other notable suppliers being India, Pakistan, China and Vietnam. Sihlobo says all these countries currently expect a reasonably good harvest, which supports the availability of supplies for exports. Manhunt for FS killers intensified

───   LUCKY NKUYANE 07:19 Tue, 06 Apr 2021 A team of police investigators has been appointed to probe the murders of five family members in Namahadi in Qwaqwa in the Free State. The appointment coincides with the 72-hour activation plan which was deployed by the police following the discovery of the burnt bodies of the victims in Marakong village on Saturday.  Police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, says the team will be led by the District Commander of Thabo Mofutsanyana, Major Jan Tsotsetsi. On that fateful day the police discovered the body of a woman lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to her stomach, while the burnt body of a man was found inside a burnt mud house. 

Chief Justice Mogoeng slams judgment on his Israel comments

───   07:31 Sun, 04 Apr 2021 Image: Gallo Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng has slammed retired Gauteng Deputy Judge President Phineas Mojapelo s decision to force him to apologise for his pro-Israel comments. Justice Mogoeng is appealing Mojapelo s decision finding that his comments at a webinar breached the Code of Judicial Conduct. He described Judge Mojapelo s reasoning as flawed and disturbingly superficial. In his 39-page appeal to the Judicial Conduct Committee, Justice Mogoeng states that Mojapelo misdirected himself in material respect by finding that the complaints Africa Palestine, Women Cultural Group and the SA Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Coalition were not about the constitutional rights to the freedom of religion, belief, thought and opinion and freedom of expression.

Famed publisher Jonathan Ball dies in Cape Town

───   07:13 Sun, 04 Apr 2021 PHOTO: eNCA Jonathan Ball, who established the publishing house carrying his name in 1976, has died in Cape Town of cancer. He was 69. Asked for comment, Ashton said: Jon hated soundbites. But he will be missed. Ball rocked the political establishment in 1978 when he published the controversial book T he Super-Afrikaners, which exposed the extent to which a secretive organisation influenced South African society.
