(Contributed) Facebook Share A mother and her adult son were killed in the Monday-night fire at an apartment building on Birmingham’s Southside. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded at 4:48 p.m. to Highland Manor apartments at 20th Street and Highland Avenue South. When they arrived on the scene, they found fire on the second floor of the high-rise complex near Five Points South. The building is home to mostly elderly and disabled residents.

(WBRC) - Captain Gail DeJarnett with Birmingham Fire and Rescue just confirmed two people have died in the Highlands apartment fire. The victims are a middle-aged man and an elderly woman. The fire investigator says they were mother and son. They have been identified as 76-year-old Sylvia Anderson Pate and 48-year-old Christopher Dwight Pate. One additional person was transported to the hospital. DeJarnett says the fire is classified as accidental.

Facebook Share Authorities have released the name of a man whose burning body was discovered inside a vacant Birmingham building, and announced a formal arrest in the case. Birmingham police Saturday night identified the victim as 34-year-old Maxim Voronetsky, who had been decapitated and set on fire during the killing. Jason Dwayne Adams, 41, is charged with murder in Voronetsky’s slaying. Both men were transients and had lengthy criminal histories for property and drug crimes.
