A mother and her adult son were killed in the Monday-night fire at an apartment building on Birmingham’s Southside.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded at 4:48 p.m. to Highland Manor apartments at 20th Street and Highland Avenue South. When they arrived on the scene, they found fire on the second floor of the high-rise complex near Five Points South. The building is home to mostly elderly and disabled residents.
