Taiwan offers free preventative medicine to HIV high-risk groups

Taipei, April 13 (CNA) Two groups of people in Taiwan considered at high risk for contracting the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) now have access to free preventive treatment, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday.
The treatment, which comes in the form of a pill, is being provided to the partners and spouses of HIV patients and people under the age of 36, CDC Deputy Director-General Lo Yi-chun (羅一鈞) said at a press conference.
Known as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), the medicine is recognized internationally as an effective prevention treatment against HIV infections, Lo said.
4 new imported COVID-19 cases in Taiwan; total rises to 1,054

Taipei, April 9 (CNA) Taiwan on Friday confirmed four new imported cases of COVID-19 from Italy, the Philippines and the United Kingdom bringing the total number of cases in the country to date to 1,054, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
One of the new cases involved a Taiwanese national in her 50s who permanently resides in Italy, but has been in Taiwan since Dec. 27. After running a fever for days, she sought care at a local hospital and was tested for COVID-19 on April 6.
11 PLA warplanes enter Taiwan s ADIZ: Defense Ministry

Taipei, April 9 (CNA) Chinese military aircraft entered Taiwan s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) on Friday for a seventh consecutive day, a continuation of maneuvers that Taiwan sees as provocations.
The mission involved 11 People s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, consisting of four J-10 multirole fighters, four J-16 multirole fighters, one KJ-500 airborne early warning and control plane, one Y-8 electronic warfare aircraft, and one Y-8 anti-submarine warfare plane, according to a Ministry of National Defense (MND) report.
The warplanes flew into the southwestern part of Taiwan s ADIZ, the MND s real-time report of air activity in the ADIZ of the Republic of China (Taiwan) said.

Transportation minister apologizes again for train crash tragedy

Taipei, April 7 (CNA) Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) on Wednesday once again publicly apologized for the casualties resulting from Taiwan s deadliest train accident in seven decades and said he submitted his written resignation to take responsibility for the incident.
Lin and deputy transport minister Chi Wen-jong (祁文中), who concurrently serves as acting head of the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA), faced questions from lawmakers at a legislative Transportation Committee hearing on the April 2 Taroko Express train crash.
