Truck fell onto track less than 2 minutes before fatal train crash 04/06/2021 10:49 PM Image courtesy of the Taiwan Transportation Safety Board Taipei, April 6 (CNA) The Taiwan Transportation Safety Board (TTSB) has deduced that the fatal collision between a Taroko express train and a crane truck on April 2 occurred less than two minutes after the truck fell onto the track near the entrance to the Qingshui Tunnel in Hualien County, eastern Taiwan. The organization, which is independent of the government, announced at a presentation in Taipei Tuesday the findings of its investigation into the accident that killed 50 people and injured over 200. Its results were based on data and video chips retrieved from the train s drive recorder and its automatic protection and control and management systems.

First batch of COVID-19 vaccines from COVAX arrives

CNA photo April 4, 2021 Taipei, April 4 (CNA) The shipment of the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines allocated to Taiwan through the global vaccine sharing program COVAX arrived at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Sunday morning. The 199,200 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine were shipped from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, by an A350-900 aircraft operated by Taiwan s China Airlines. The flight landed at the Taoyuan airport at 5:21 a.m. Customs inspectors and airport police officers examined the shipment documents and the cargoes by the side of the airplane before they were escorted by airport police to a cold-chain warehouse at which clearance procedures will be performed.

48 people confirmed dead in Taroko Express train accident 04/02/2021 05:07 PM CNA photo April 2, 2021 Taipei, April 2 (CNA) Forty-eight people have been confirmed dead in an accident involving a Taroko Express train in Hualien County that was heading south toward Hualien and Taitung on Friday morning, according to the latest update by the National Fire Agency. Another 66 passengers on the eight-carriage train suffered moderate to severe injuries and were sent to six hospitals in the eastern Taiwan county for treatment, the agency said. The accident occurred at 9:28 a.m. as the express train slammed into a crane truck as it was about to enter the Qingshui Tunnel, according to the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA), which operates the Taroko Express trains.
