MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: March 17, 2021 Michelle Bennett Edmonds Mayor Mike Nelson on Wednesday announced that he has appointed King County Sheriff’s Office veteran Michelle Bennett to serve as the city’s acting chief of police, effective Thursday, March 18. Bennettt will replace Acting Chief Jim Lawless, who is resigning to take a job as assistant police chief in Marysville. Bennett will serve as acting chief while the city conducts its recruitment for the next police chief a process that is estimated to take several months. Under city code, her appointment can run for six months or until the new chief is hired, whichever is sooner.

Acting Edmonds Police Chief Jim Lawless said he won’t be applying again for the job of permanent chief, stating that it’s time for the community “to begin to heal.” “The time has come for us all to look towards what is next for the Edmonds Police Department and move forward,” Lawless said in a statement to the community Thursday. “The mayor will be conducting a national search for the next Chief of Police for the Edmonds Police Department. It is my belief that the smoothest transition possible is what is needed for the department and the community to begin to heal.”

Posted: December 16, 2020 To the Edmonds Community:             The Edmonds Police Officers Association (EPOA) appreciates that the city will not be moving forward with the Chief of Police appointment and confirmation made by Mayor Nelson and the City Council last week, of a candidate who apparently is not qualified for the position. We find it troubling that Mayor Nelson took no responsibility and made no acknowledgement of his mistakes and lack of leadership that resulted in this debacle. How can the city move forward if the Mayor does not even recognize and acknowledge the actual issues and problems his office and the council created in this matter? When will there be an apology to the community for maligning it with baseless racial claims? It appears Mayor Nelson wants to hold the community and city employees to standards he feels do not apply to himself.
