Pensacola area internet service providers are participating in a new federal broadband discount program meant to make high-speed home internet more affordable.
Earlier this month, the Federal Communications Commission launched the $3.2 billion Emergency Broadband Benefit Program that provides a discount of up to $50 toward broadband internet service for eligible households.
The program has a $75 discount for eligible households living on tribal lands, and some providers also are participating in an additional $100 discount toward the purchase of a computer or tablet needed to connect to the internet.
The new program was created by Congress and signed into law by former President Donald Trump as part of a COVID-19 relief package passed in December.

May 25, 2021 • (TNS) Sunnyside School District is partnering with Cox Communications to expand high-speed internet services to more than 1,000 households in the neighborhood surrounding Summit View Elementary, about 2 miles south of the Tucson airport.
The neighborhood has historically not had access to broadband services, which created challenges for remote learning over the past year of the COVID-19 pandemic, a news release said. Cox also awarded the elementary school $10,000 to support digital equity efforts and programs to help students over the summer and into next school year.
WADESBORO The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is offering an Emergency Broadband Benefit Program in which eligible households may receive a temporary discount on monthly internet bills as a way to stay connected through the pandemic.
If eligible, you could receive up to $50 a month discount on broadband services and associated equipment rentals. If your household is on qualifying Tribal lands, the discount could be up to $75. There is also a one-time discount of up to $100 for a laptop, tablet or desktop computer.
Eligible households are those who have an income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines, or those that participate in certain assistance programs like SNAP, Medicaid or Lifeline. Household members who experienced a substantial loss of income since Feb. 29, 2020 due to a job loss or furlough with a total income at or below $99,000 may also be qualify.
