Pensacola area internet service providers are participating in a new federal broadband discount program meant to make high-speed home internet more affordable.
Earlier this month, the Federal Communications Commission launched the $3.2 billion Emergency Broadband Benefit Program that provides a discount of up to $50 toward broadband internet service for eligible households.
The program has a $75 discount for eligible households living on tribal lands, and some providers also are participating in an additional $100 discount toward the purchase of a computer or tablet needed to connect to the internet.
The new program was created by Congress and signed into law by former President Donald Trump as part of a COVID-19 relief package passed in December.
