Black fungus patient dies of medical negligence at Rims | Ranchi News

Representative image RANCHI: The 45-year-old mucormycosis patient, Usha Devi, who was operated at Rims on July 8 after the intervention of the Jharkhand high court, passed away on Sunday morning. After the news of Devi’s death broke, her relatives alleged negligence on the part of the hospital authorities, complaining that she had to wait for more than 50 days for her surgery. Devi’s son, Gaurav Gupta, has demanded an enquiry alleging that his mother would have been alive had the surgery been conducted earlier. Gaurav has filed a police complaint at Bariatu police station demanding action against 11 doctors, including Rims director Dr Kameshwar Prasad and medical superintendent Dr Vivek Kashyap, for ‘medical negligence’.

Ranchi: Hours after the Jharkhand high court pulled up the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), Ranchi for negligence of a 45-year-old black fungus patient named Usha Devi, who has been admitted at the state-run hospital since May 17, the hospital swung into action and has now planned her surgery for Thursday. Last week, Usha’s son Gaurav Gupta had written to chief minister Hemant Soren where he, besides requesting the CM for monetary help, had brought to his attention to the ‘lackadaisical attitude of the doctors at Rims’ which led to the worsening condition of his mother. He had claimed that his mother has been admitted at the hospital for more than one and a half months and the doctors’ negligence made her condition critical.

Ranchi: As many as four people have died of mucormycosis, a rare but fatal disease also commonly known as black fungus, in the state while 15 patients are undergoing treatment for the diseases at different hospitals. While a state-level meeting was conducted over the development on Saturday, the state government will discuss it on Sunday. Officials of the state health department told TOI that they did not keep a record of the patients infected by black fungus but said they are ready to hold a discussion with the Centre about the disease and its management on Sunday. Additional chief secretary (health) Arun Kumar Singh, however, stressed that the government is taking the rising cases of the disease seriously and is keeping a close watch on the development.

On Sunday, Ranchi had recorded 17.6° C minimum temperature, the highest for the month in 50 years. While weathermen attribute this sudden change to a western disturbance and its impact, many are clueless about the exact reason for the unusual weather pattern.
