York Covid cases rise slightly - but still below UK average

The government s latest Covid interactive map, which shows green spreading to Tang Hall York’s weekly recorded Covid-19 rate has risen slightly over the last 24 hours. In the seven days up to May 4, the number of Covid cases in the city was 33, up from 28 the day before. The city now has an infection rate of 15.7 cases per 100,000 of the population, up from the 13.3 cases/ 100,000 yesterday, but still below the UK average. The majority of wards in the city still remain white on the government s interactive Covid map, indicating that they have fewer than three cases of the virus. But there are now four wards which show as green: Rawcliffe & Clifton South, which has four cases; York city centre, which has three; Fulford Road & Clementhorpe, which now has five cases; and Tang Hall, with 4.

Stop sitting on empty sites council boss tells developers

The Persimmon site next to StayCity aparthotel which has been taken off the market. Inset: Cllr Andy D’Agorne Deputy council leader Andy D Agorne has called on developers to stop sitting on empty housing sites in York and start developing them. Cllr D Agorne spoke out after Persimmon Homes admitted recently that its 2.2 acre site next to the StayCity aparthotel and York Barbican had been taken off the market while various options and enquiries were reviewed. The land, just outside the bar walls, has been disused since the former Barbican pool and its car park closed in 2004. A letter from Cllr D Agorne published in The Press on May 3 said it would be a refreshing change after all this time if the owners would talk to local residents and their elected representatives before bringing forward urgent plans to see this prominent central site brought back into use, for the benefit of the city and those desperate for a home in York .

York council should take over building sites that are being left empty

By Reader s letter Letter The prime site next to StayCity aparthotel which has been taken off the market while options are reviewed I very much agree with Cllr D’Agorne (Letters, May 3) that City of York Council should take over the derelict Barbican building site. I suggest they bring in the architect firm they are already working with, Mikhail Riches, to develop a well-designed and much needed social housing scheme. But this isn’t the only derelict building site which the council should take over. In Fulford Road, the former Bristow’s Garage site has been fenced off and abandoned for many years.
