MAJOR expansion plans at a top York school are set to be approved - but neighbours are hitting out over the impact on traffic. Residents in nearby streets hoped Fulford School’s plans to build a new teaching block and access route into the school would rid their roads of traffic from buses and cars taking pupils to and from the site. But the proposals will see buses enter the school from the existing route in Fulfordgate and exit through the new Germany Beck development - with residents in both areas criticising the plans. Fulford Parish Council has objected, saying residents in Fulfordgate are unhappy because they were promised that the entrance route to the school would be moved to the Germany Beck development in the south.
The Persimmon site next to StayCity aparthotel which has been taken off the market. Inset: Cllr Andy D’Agorne Deputy council leader Andy D Agorne has called on developers to stop sitting on empty housing sites in York and start developing them. Cllr D Agorne spoke out after Persimmon Homes admitted recently that its 2.2 acre site next to the StayCity aparthotel and York Barbican had been taken off the market while various options and enquiries were reviewed. The land, just outside the bar walls, has been disused since the former Barbican pool and its car park closed in 2004. A letter from Cllr D Agorne published in The Press on May 3 said it would be a refreshing change after all this time if the owners would talk to local residents and their elected representatives before bringing forward urgent plans to see this prominent central site brought back into use, for the benefit of the city and those desperate for a home in York .
A TOP York secondary school is set to expand by building a new teaching block to make room for more students. Fulford School has lodged plans for a new two-storey building, the demolition of some temporary blocks and a new external lift to make the Bronte building more accessible. The proposals also include plans for a new access road on to Germany Beck - with buses set to enter the school from Fulfordgate and exit by the new route. This plan has been controversial - with householders in Fulfordgate pushing for the new Germany Beck access road to become the entry and exit point for the school. They have complained for years about the “absolute chaos” in Fulfordgate every weekday morning and afternoon, when a convoy of school buses trundles along to enter and leave Fulford School, and when parents also drop off and pick up their children.
