And they are actively trying to preserve the culture. We see their history all around us if we are at shasta lake and shasta dam in particular. There are lots of controversies, its been a rough history. Its important that we learn about this history so we dont we peat some of the mistakes that weve made. So today we are going to be looking at the california Indian Library collection. Its part of our local History Collection which is called the box collection which is named after may boggs and its a really important piece of the History Collection. So the indian collection began at uc berkeley at the library and then decided to disburse the collection out by the state to 20 different libraries and so what happened the collection was divided based geographically so what we got here in shasta was the information on the native americans from our particular area. Book came. And then later on, i became a fish and game warden myself. And then i continued writing stories about my generation of fish and wildlife so the book is called the game wardens son. Being with my dad during those years when he was a game warden was like having a storybook childhood. I did things that most kids would dream of. When he started out, he was on what they call marine patrol and his duty was patrolling the channel the California Channel Islands which are fantastic. And theyre anywhere from like 26 miles across the sea like the song says or clear out way out in the ocean. So i got to go on these excursions or these patrols out into the out into the Channel Islands and see see things that mofmente kids would only dream of. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service has denied protections for the Samwel salamander (
Hydromantes samweli), Shasta salamander, (
H. shastae), and Wintu salamander (
H. wintu), though it is asking for the public to submit any information that may be relevant to the status of these salamanders or their habitats.
“We conclude that habitat loss or disturbance from various threats (e.g., vegetation management activities, wildfire, climatic changes) within the range of the Samwel, Shasta, and Wintu salamanders have likely impacted individuals of each species,” the USFWS said in a statement denying protections of the amphibians. “However, the magnitude and extent of these

The Fish and Wildlife Service said today it will deny federal protections to three salamander species that environmentalists fear could be put in danger by a proposed California dam project.
Pressed by a lawsuit to make a decision, the federal agency concluded the Shasta salamander, Samwel Shasta salamander and Wintu Shasta salamander don t need to be listed under the Endangered Species Act even if plans proceed to expand the Shasta Dam by raising it.
