In the fireside room. Today were going to be looking at items from our local History Collection which is called the boggs collection. So the collection is named after may bacon boggs. She moved as a child out to Shasta County in 1871, and she grew up here in old shasta. And she had had a love for history and particularly transportation and early california history. So she, throughout her life she was collecting items, and she did collect books, and she ended up giving some of her a portion of her collection plus a cabinet to the library, and that was the start of the boggs collection. Now the boggs collection has grown, and weve outgrown the cabinet [laughter] and we are now in many cabinets. It consists of probably about 5,000 items. And the collection focuses on early california history, native americans but then particularly the history of Shasta County. So this collection is important because it is a way for us to preserve the past and learn about the past in Shasta County. And wev
Below 400 feet of water lies the remnants of the town of chemical and a smelter. On the other side of the dam is corum and the corum smelter. That is where we are headed today. Of the things we dont talk about a lot is the copper industry and theres a lot could learn from it. My resources to finding tales that are not told in trying to get those out there. Now, we are standing outside the remnants of the corum shelter. It was probably the most significant copper town in Shasta County. Catholic, which is south of us, and a horseshoe shape up to commit and the town of english. Copper minesrious and smelters that operated in 1923. Rea from 1895 to copper was discovered in the 1860s in Shasta County but early experiments did not prove profitable. One minor and the send it sending his or her to wales.
