When i was in medical school i was decided between psychiatry and cardiology which are two very different deals. Actually leaning towards the cardiology part initially. As i was getting to see patients in getting into the nittygritty of being a doctor, i found a really like the idea of talking to people and helping people through the problems in that way more so than the more mechanical side of treating their hard. Thats how it all unfolded. Youre also an author. What possessed you to write a book. This book that ive written is basically a memoir of my journey through medical treatment written through the lens of race. There are a lot of physician authors out there and a lot of books out there but i feel like raise is an important issue in medicine and these authors largely overlooked the subject. Guest it comes from a quotation from Wilbur Wright of the Wright Brothers who was explaining how the Wright Brothers were first to fly. And he dropped a piece of paper to his floor and said to his audience notice how the paper darts back and forth, this is the kind of horse we have to learn to ride if we are going to fly. The interesting thing is why did the Wright Brothers fly first, and what was the process they used, because they werent the first people to have the idea of building a flying machine, and they werent the first people to try. People like me as well, who i was studying the history when this was going on i thought, it is so important for people to know about this history because theres kind of a notion that, oh, adoption is great. Isnt it nice when people who have financial means take in children who are in difficult circumstances or who are neglected or abused . I felt like there was an important history to be told here, that theres more than meets the eye, that sometimes the state was using the promotion of fostering and adoption as a tool to undermine ofian people and instead providing the resources that indian communities needed to thrive and for indian families who are struggling to get back on their feet, over time, it seemed like the government was really trying to just undermine these communities through removing their children, because if you remove children, third ofy up to 1 . . This is the letter that will cather wrote back to her explaining why thats difficult to do. One of the reasons why this room is so important is that we are a public archive. So anyone can do research. It is close stacks. Which means that our staff has to retrieve materials, but they are available to anyone. We can retrieve them and patrons can stay and look at them. Mostts one of the important things is that it is available to everyone. And i think it is also important that we have the space, because we can promote the works of emerging nebraska authors. We have the ames reading series. We allow authors to come and read from the books they are writing, and to promote their books. We promote them as authors.
