Wayne County Merit Commission Accepting Applications for Corrections Officers

The Wayne County Sheriff's Merit Commission is now accepting applications for correctional officers for the Wayne County Jail. The commission will be accepting applications until 5 PM on June 9th. Officials will be accepting applications for both full and part-time opportunities. Officials say that if you have already applied this year, you do not need to re-apply. Starting pay for new full-time correctional officers is $19.14 per hour while it is $15 per hour for a part-time corrections officer. Lateral transfers are being accepted for correctional officers as well. Full-time certified Correctional Officers are eligible for a lateral transfer of up to 10 years of seniority toward payroll. A 10-year Correctional Officer's starting pay is $23.38 an hour. Those interested can pick up an application at the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

The Fairfield Police Department conducted a sex offender compliance check this week. Two subjects were found to be out of compliance and reports have been forwarded to the Wayne County State's Attorney for filing of charges. At 11 a.m. October 24th one person was cited by city police following a bicycle vs. SUV crash at the intersection of Elm and NW 6th Street in Fairfield. 20-year-old Rachel L. Walker of Fairfield was cited for disobeying a stop sign after her bicycle hit the passenger side of a vehicle driven by 61-year-old David A. Ward of Geff, IL. Walker was examined by EMT's at the scene but refused transport. Anyone with information regarding crimes can call the Wayne County Crimestoppers at (618) 842-9777. Fairfield police investigated an accident late Friday afternoon that occurred north of the Wal Mart intersection. EDWARDS CO. REAL ESTATE TAX BILLS DUE Edwards County Treasurer Debbie Smith is reminding Edwards County taxpayers that the first installment of the 2021 payable 2022 Real Estate Taxes are due today. This year's Tax extension amounts to $6,490,579.88. Payments may be made in person, by mail, or in the outside drop box. The box is located in front of the Cell Tower on the northeast side of the Courthouse (Sheriff's side). Anyone who uses the drop box should include a daytime phone number on their information. Those who wish to pay online using a credit or debit card may go to www.govtechtaxpro.com which will add a 2.5% fee that goes to the credit card company. The instructions are listed on the back of the tax bills on how to pay online. The second installment will be due Monday, November 28, 2022. Endangered Missing Person At the request of the Lawrenceville Police Department, the Illinois State Police have activated an Endangered Missing Person Advisory. The Lawrenceville Police Department is requesting the public's assistance in locating Floyd E. Wheeler. Wheeler is a 33-year-old white male, standing 5 foot 10 inches, weighing 150 lbs. Floyd has brown hair and hazel eyes, and was last seen wearing a ball cap, army green hoodie, jeans, and work boots. He was last seen at 1726 12th St, Lawrenceville at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 21st. Mr. Wheeler has a condition that places him in danger.
