know, phony wonk thing, you know, where he s he s putting together his budgets with magic asterisks, he s going down the old jack kemp trail about how he cares about poor folks. paul ryan cares about one thing and only one thing shoving as much wealth up to the very, very top of the food chain and making sure it doesn t trickle back down again. that s the summation of paul ryan s legacy. that s a much clearer through line than deficits and debt i think. of you said look at what he s done. although there is something that is interesting in his career, ruth, which is the ryan budget. i think that s the place where in some ways he got put in charge and he was too honest about his vision. in some ways it was a high point for honesty. in 2010, 2011, 2012, yeah, we want to cut we want to voucherize medicare. that was one of the big ideas. we want to cut a lot of
charge and he was too honest about his vision. in some ways it was a high point for honesty. in 2010, 2011, 2012, yeah, we want to cut we want to voucherize medicare. that was one of the big ideas. we want to cut a lot of government spending. there was no political constituency for it. it wasn t popular at all. that s right. this is where the grandmas and tennis shoes came out and said, this is enough is enough with paul ryan. the u.s. conference of catholic bishops called him out and said it was the gospel of ann rand. the u.s. congress of catholic bishops said it does not represent the more rate of the catholic church in which ryan is a member and he brought up in promoting the massive cuts for programs that benefitted the poor. he promised an earned income tax credit and went on a cynical poverty tour and somehow that never showed up in his budget. there was a lot about that that seemed very cruel, really
ten years. so that was the motivation behind this bill from the leadership s perspective. cut taxes for the wealthy in corporations, cut back on assistance for low income americans and that s all that matters to them. they were never concerned about how to improve the health care of the american people. you serve with paul ryan, you work there with him on the day to day basis. if he were to succeed in getting to do this, in cutting medicaid in draconian fashion, in having this massive tax cut and basically deregulating the health insurance market, do you think that he would then move on to something like medicare? is there any limit to the number of social programs that, in your view, paul ryan would go after in this manner? there is no limit, joy. he s been very, very public. he wants to voucherize medicare. he wants to turn it into the private insurance system, give seniors a little bit of money and say go out and buy insurance and good luck to you. that s been his public positio
you have lost touch, whether it s rural america. do you think you have lost touch culturely or economically or both? well, i think we have to underscore that economic message. you know, no ohio i went out there and talked to voters and what they heard from donald trump is i m going to bring your coal jobs back. that s a lie. but what they heard is that he felt their pain. what they heard from us was that, you know, we vote for us because we re not him. and we have to make sure we re communicating our affirmative message. we stand for good wages. we stand for social security. we stand for retirement security. we brought this nation medicare. the republicans are trying to voucherize medicare and prooiftize social security. donald trump wants to eliminate overtime pay for trump. he doesn t care about raising the minimum wage. but we have to communicate these messages consistently in every zip code because i learned in my trip across this country during this campaign that a lot of
